Little Did They Know The Horror That Awaited Them…

21 Mar

I am so glad that I don’t have to recap that clusterfuck of a match. I don’t envy you, Maisougio. I can imagine the expletive filled rant that’s going to happen. How could it be anything else? Here’s some shots of the boys when they first arrived at El Madrigal. All smiles, unaware of the horror that awaits them. Sigh.

Ugh. What can I say. Next match we’ll be missing Lass, Pepe, Sergio, Mesut, Rui Faria, Mou and Callejon got injured. God help us. This is going to be interesting to say the least, but fuck it. HALA MADRID! HALA MADRID! HALA MADRID! (But seriously, guys, we need to pick it up the pace – the last two games have been rank.)

This match…. I’m still so angry at the ref. This was a disgrace and what didn’t help was how we played so badly in the first half.

  2. Mee March 21, 2012 at 7:56 pm #

What did Ozil do? Stupid Barca paying refs.

  3. panama March 21, 2012 at 8:04 pm #

Oh boy, what a match. I agree that some of the ref’s decisions were questionable, but that’s not the reason we lost… Urrgh. Not at all looking forward to the media shitstorm tomorrow, especially considering Messi’s hattrick.

    Hope Calletì gets well soon!

  4. headbandsandheartbreak March 21, 2012 at 8:18 pm #

Yeah, we definitely can’t put all the blame on the ref. We played like poo. But that said, that ref was out of control.

    • drea March 21, 2012 at 11:01 pm #

True. Still, even if we can’t blame it all on the ref, I’d really like to still blame him for half of it.

Silver lining…at the end of the day, it’s still not as bad as it could have been–we could have lost. 6 points is 6 points!

  5. Elisha Buckley March 21, 2012 at 8:21 pm #

Not too bothered about the draw, mistakes were bound to happen and we are still 6 points clear. It’s the cards that are making me angry!! Even if we pick up the pace for the next match, we are without some key players and that’s going to make a big difference. Can someone please magic Di Maria better?

  6. Natalie March 21, 2012 at 8:26 pm #

Such a card fest, royal mess!! I hate to say this but it is not looking good now, maybe Peps mind games are getting to the guys.

    • headbandsandheartbreak March 21, 2012 at 8:34 pm #

Oh I’m keeping the faith. We’re still 6 clear. And this time last year we were something like 8 behind. Never give up.

  7. Kait March 21, 2012 at 8:38 pm #

That game was a disaster. It looked like all our magic had gone out of us. It broke my heart watching the game go from bad to worse.

Thanks. I think we all needed that. I think this is going to end up as the therapy post!

  9. Liza March 21, 2012 at 8:48 pm #

what did Mesut do? Was it really just sarcastically clapping because that might make me like him even more.

    • headbandsandheartbreak March 21, 2012 at 8:57 pm #

      Yep! He looks gobsmacked: http://youtu.be/eHOonVcZBOk

      • Anna March 22, 2012 at 3:46 am #

and the first thing they do when they get a red card… take off their headbands :(

        • Anna March 22, 2012 at 3:48 am #

really though… a straight red for applauding? was the referee PMS’ing or something?!

          • Izan March 22, 2012 at 4:58 am #

that’s what i’m thinking too…i don’t see Mesut talk angrily or come too close to that ‘card-friendly’ reff!?

          • Jenny March 22, 2012 at 11:01 am #

The ref had lost control of the match and was making a point by sending him off.

Any dissent of any kind would be carded.

When Senna equalized there were 10 minutes left plus some added time. The boys lost their heads. They should have been 100% focused on getting the equalizer.

In an ideal world, Ozil would not have applauded (he probably expected a yellow – but with other players I have siad that cards for lip are the dumbest cards after taking one’s shirt off and it was a stupid risk as the game was deteriorating.). Ramos would not have made that ridiculous tackle to begin with (which deserved a straight red, arguably). Mourinho would have called out encouragement to his men instead of yelling at the fourth official.

They had almost 12-15 minutes to get a goal. Every single effort should have been expended to get that goal.

It was a break-down in discipline. The ref played his part – but discipline broke down, and Mourinho (and I LOVE him) has to take the blame for some of this. Ozil never used to clap refereeing decisions – that’s a Mourinho trade-mark.

Pepe may or may not miss the match (he wasn’t carded, but his outburst could lead to post-match sanction) but he should have kept his mouth shut. The game was over. Insulting the ref’s mother was out of line.

The only sensible action: Mourinho not talking to the press. Ideally he’d have spoken and spoken sensibly but at least he understands his own character well enough to avoid putting himself in a position where he’d lengthen his sanction.

For now: let’s hope Ozil’s card is rescinded (there’s a small chance) that action is NOT taken against Pepe, and that Mourinho and Rui’s ban will not be extended past 1 game because they behaved calmly in the aftermath.

Any potential lineups against Real Sociedad are still pretty good and should beat them. I know we struggle on their home ground and that will impress on the players that they have to work hard. I’m sure they will.

I was shocked to see Mesut sent off! Sergio? Yeah. Mou? Sure. They’re a bit more prone to that sort of thing. By the end of the match, I was just kind of shaking my head. Then came Higuain’s yellow card after the whistle, which just made me laugh with disbelief. I don’t even…

  11. Vera March 21, 2012 at 9:28 pm #

I am dying with laughter at the stupidity of this ref. And yeah its not all the ref’s fault but it kinda shows how Barca has been slipping a couple euros that way.
And I”m laughing at Barca fans who think they’ve won, RM’s still 6 pts. ahead…and even if they do win, hand that trophy over to this ref bitches.

    • Jenny March 22, 2012 at 11:06 am #

Barca fans accused us of slipping Euros to the refs. Please don’t copy them by making baseless accusations. In football, decisions sometimes don’t go your way. You have to make the best of it.

It’s a terrible accusation at any rate. Games are high-pressure. The referees operate under intolerable strain already (one attempted suicide in Germany only a few months ago). Accusations like that are inexcusable.

I have commented above ^^ on why I think the game was lost from the moment the free kick went in. The ref played his part, but the players helped hm do it. There was a lack of focus. Only one or two players looked like they were trying to get the equalizer.

I agree with the rest of your comment. This time last year we were 5 points behind. That would go to 8 points in the game before the Clasico when we lost to Sporting Gijon at home. All is certainly not lost.

But Mou and the players have to grow up. I don’t care if Barca crowds the ref and gets away with it. I expect my players to behave themselves.

Some persons should not be placed in aurthority, it goes to there head. Looking at you ref. Madrid deseved some of the punishment dished out but I think the referee was just trying to show them who is boss. Anyway we need to move on so come on Madrid! Lets show all of them who is BOSS.

  13. Tania March 21, 2012 at 10:24 pm #

That ref was just ______ (you fill in the blank) Have you guys seen the picture going around showing a Villareal player with two yellows but no red? I didn’t know if it was real ad I didn’t see much of the game. I do find it hilarious that my Cule family and fans out there think they are going to win now it’s like seriously we still have a six point lead and we ain’t going to give that up. Win, lose, or tie I’m with Madrid Hasta el Final.

    • Jenny March 22, 2012 at 11:09 am #

He was incompetent. But Mourinho and Rui should have kept their heads, Mesut should not have applauded a decision, and Sergio deserved his red.

The lads (and coaching staff) need to keep their heads. They contributed to a break-down in discipline. The ref was an incompetent with a bad sense of humour. The players should have known that and kept their heads.

firstly, there was no live telecast at my country (so sad!)..so when i saw the final score from espn news, still ok…but when i heard all the incidents…OMG,what have they done? When i watched the video, I also wonder what happend to Mesut?I only saw he walked and maybe speaked something with that ‘card-friendly’ reff, but why red card??? wonder what did Mesut said…hope RM can control their games after this, forget about the past…because it’s already happen, more important is what’s next…

We wouldn’t have had this problem of 2 points less if we had score. That’s it. Damn it, we have to use the chances! It doesn’t matter if we dominate all the time, cause it always can happen that there’ll be a free-kick and a goal – equalizer.
I really don’t understand people who start to blame Iker now. IKER. Sorry, but if you wanna blame someone, then surely not our goalkeeper. Without him we wouldn’t be on the top of the league. Second thing- Hamit. Bringing on a defensive player Mou gave the sign that we wanna hold this score. Argh.
Then the ref. Yes, he drives me mad BUT we commited fouls that weren’t needed. Same for Mesut. I totally understand that they were on nerves, but STILL, you have to be more careful, especially knowing how the ref is. We should have learn from our faults in the past.

    Now to the better things:
    1) Mesut looks so hot when he gets red
    2) Albiol & Varane on Saturday, right? We don’t have any other possibilities anyway so yeah. I look forward to see them playing.
    3) The team and Mou are hopefully in rage now and will kick Real Sociedad’s arses off the Santiago Bernabéu.
    4) We already had this little problem in autumn, we came back with .. 10 wins in a row? Something like that. So…
    HALA MADRID

    • Jenny March 22, 2012 at 11:10 am #

Altintop is actually a winger (people forget, because he plays in all positions). I wouldn’t call his substitution defensive, exactly.

And the free kick he gave away was really a dive on the part of the player.
