Mou vs. The Press…Literally

28 Mar

This great article was on the Real Madrid website this morning:

Mourinho played as goalkeeper and forward in a match between Real Madrid staff and members of the press
by Laura Navas / Translation by Michael J. O’Donnell

After this morning’s training session, Real Madrid’s coaching staff, equipment managers, medical staff, and Communications Department staff faced a team of journalists who usually report on from Valdebebas. The latter won 3-2 and scored two of their goals from penalties…

The match was 60 minutes long and marked by a fun atmosphere. Jose Mourinho started out as goalkeeper and made some impressive saves that allowed him to keep a clean sheet throughout the first half. The locals scored a goal before half-time through Jose Morais.

Mourinho left the goal after conceding a strike from a penalty at the start of the second half. He was replaced by goalkeeper coach Silvinio Louro and took on striker duties. The Real Madrid coach was constantly kidding around, throwing himself on the ground and asking for a free-kick or a penalty whenever he barely came into contact with an opponent. Assistant coach and former Real Madrid player Aitor Karanka added a touch of class to the match. Three more goals were scored in the game, one of them from a penalty. The journalists won 3-2 in the end.

The journalists who participated in the match were: Alvaro de la Rosa (AS), Carlos Rodriguez (Onda Madrid), Javier Gudiño (Castilla La Mancha TV), Sid Lowe (The Guardian), Jose Luis Sanchez (laSexta), Mariano Sancha (Antena 3), Diego Miguel Fernandez (Cuatro), Jose Luis Guerrero (AS), Jose Ignacio Ochoa, (Marca), Ricardo Sierra (Cuatro), Miguel Angel Toribio (Radio Marca), Alberto Piñero (Goal), Nacho Peña (Intereconomia TV), Pablo Polo (Marca), Manu Sainz (AS), Alberto Pereiro (Onda Cero).

(Lozil says: My fave part of the article was this “The Real Madrid coach was constantly kidding around, throwing himself on the ground and asking for a free-kick or a penalty whenever he barely came into contact with an opponent.” So basically, he was doing his Angel Di Maria as Norma Desmond impression? 😉  I’m glad to see that Mou had a bit of fun with the press. Perhaps now things might be a bit more civil between them?)

Apparently, there is some film footage. I’m hoping more of it will show up on Youtube. It supposedly has Mou pretending to dive and laughing his arse off. That I need to see.
