A Heartfelt Apology…

14 Apr

It was brought to my attention that yesterday’s Daily Drool Fabio Cannavaro is against same sex marriage and has made homophobic comments in the press. I had not heard about this before and did a bit of sleuthing and was horrified to discover that it was true. It was even brought to the attention of the European Parliament. Anyone who knows me personally will tell you that I am a staunch defender of marriage equality and gay rights, which makes this particularly painful for me.  And readers know that I have championed anti-homophobia campaigns on this blog regularly. If I had known this information beforehand, I would have never featured Cannavaro here and my heartfelt apologies to anyone that I offended by doing so.  I have made a donation to the Human Rights Campaign in light of this to help them with their work toward gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equal rights.  This complete and utter faux pas on my part comes just as noted douchebag Kobe Bryant made a homophobic slur to a ref  (which he has now apologized for – whatever, Kobe). This sort of thing has to stop. Thank you to notoriousjk for bringing this to my attention. I sincerely hope this never happens again, but god, if it does, please let me know ASAP. I take full responsibility for this and would like you to know that Maisougio had nothing to do with the choice of Cannavaro. I urge you to check out (under our Sites We Love section) both Red Card Homophobia and The Justin Campaign, which fight discrimination in association football. Again, my sincere apologies.  – Lozil

Thank you for posting this 🙂

Thank you so much for letting me know. I would have been gutted if someone didn’t tell me right away.

I did not know that was the case but thank you for re-posting!!! Good Job!!!

I felt a million times more like shit because the post was made on the first wedding anniversary of two of my closest male friends – a wedding that I was an extremely happy participant in. Seriously, what is wrong with people? Why is there so much hate out there?

          • GinaM April 14, 2011 at 4:23 pm #

I was thinking the same thing, it’s funny he’s such a beautiful handsome man but after that he totally loses the hotness… you know what I mean?

I also didn’t know the homophobic side of Fabio Cannavaro. It’s disgusting. Obviously there is a lot of people stupid and ignorant in the world, but is also very obviously that your are NOT one of them. For me, you don’t need to apologize. In previous posts, you’ve made it very clear that you don’t tolerate discrimination of any kind. So, don’t be sad, it could happen to anyone. 🙂

    * In case you don’t know, Genaro Gattuso also made some homophobic comments a couple of years ago. But I don’t think that he would ever show his troll face over here…

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 14, 2011 at 5:36 pm #

Thanks for your kindness and understanding. In looking for info on Canna’s homphobia, I came across the info on Gattuso. He actually has shown up on this site, but in the context of playing against us and his brawl with Joe Jordan. I’m rather fascinated by Rino because he seems more than a little batshit and scary. Can’t really stand him though and no, you’ll never see him as a Daily Drool especially after finding out this new stuff about him! I’m going to have to Google all my Drools to make sure that they aren’t total creeps from now on!

I was in class when I read this post & your apology made me sad! 😦 Lozil, in past posts you’ve tackled issues of racism & homophobia in football and brought stories like Brad Jones’ to our attention. These are the posts of someone who is intelligent & caring! Thats why I felt sad reading your apology, because its not necessary! I think the people who read HB&HB everyday KNOW the kind of person you are and that you would never stand for any kind of hate. For the time that I’ve cyber known you, your understanding & tolerance are some of the things that I’ve come to admire most…that & your completely filthy mind 😉

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 14, 2011 at 11:23 pm #

Thank you, partner in crime. This really touched me (esp. the part about my filthy mind) – seriously though, this meant a lot to me. xoxo

Another thing I’d like to say is that homophobic players of all sports need a smack! Someone should really explain to footballers just why their jerseys have those RESPECT patches!

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 14, 2011 at 11:24 pm #

Which reminds me – you still need to design our Champions League “Respect the Man Love” patch. 😉

I did this last night actually http://pikchur.com/Ae1Y but I think HB&HB deserves something super custom & prettyful, so Im going to keep working…input is welcome everyone!

        • shiggers April 15, 2011 at 11:38 am #

HA! Love the design! I’d wear it happily.

          • Maisoun April 15, 2011 at 2:17 pm #

Aw thanks! Im actually tempted to buy a bunch of the Respect patches & make some Man-Love ones…

wow…i had not heard that. i def would not have nominated him for daily drool had i heard that before. bad canna, bad!! >:O

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 14, 2011 at 11:26 pm #

I was so shocked at how many of us had not heard about this – especially since he made the remarks in 2009. That’s relatively recent and I think that would have stuck in my mind. However, he made them in the Spanish press and I’m not sure how widely it was reported in the English speaking press.

  7. Jenny April 14, 2011 at 10:23 pm #

Oh sweetheart – there’s no need to apologize! I’m totally with Maisoun on this. You’ve brought so many inspirational stories our way and your determination to “red card” homophobia is so well known that even if I had known about his comments (I didn’t – what a pig!) I would have known at once that you didn’t.

    You are so wonderful!

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 14, 2011 at 11:29 pm #

Thank you so much, Jenny – I really appreciate your support. xoxo I was really disheartened to log on to Kickette tonight and see a whole feature on Canna’s hotness. So many of us had no clue – it’s surprising. But once a bell is rung… I can’t look at him the same again.

i missed a lot of drama yesterday, apparently – but good on you for standing up, redacting and writing your own rules.

and thanks to both you and notoriousjk for bringing this disgrace to our attention.

you make us all proud here, lo!
