Redeeming Ramos

23 Apr

Everyone in the world, it seems, has seen the now legendary Sese the Cup Slayer footage.  Hilarious as it may be, many people (as Emily rightly pointed out) have been criticizing Sergio for being negligent and disrespectful to the Cup.

Oh c’mon, all you people who don’t know him like we do, take a look at the facts – it was pouring rain, they were on an open top bus and Marcelo was jumping up and down like a lunatic next to him. The footage from Marca clearly shows two things: Sese slips and falls backwards (landing on that perfectly cushioned arse no doubt) and Marcelo clips him with a flailing arm right before he goes down (as Cosi mentioned in the comments).  It’s not like he intended that to happen, sheesh!  As unamadridista showed today in her post, we’re not the only cup killers – Barca has killed a couple themselves – check this footage from AS out (stick around for the hilarious hockey cup killing). Everyone has had a “Whoops!” moment. It just goes to show that whatever Madrid does, we somehow do it bigger and more flamboyantly than anyone else. That’s my boys!  But as Ray Davies sang about in “All of My Friends Were There” after you have the humiliation, you go back, do it again, it goes perfectly and all is well. So hold on to that, Sergio, this too shall pass, and it will be sweet revenge when we lift out next trophy (just don’t stand next to Marcelo, to be safe)!

Go on over to una’s site and read her post today (in the Other Things section) about some of the statements of Barca players/staff/fans pre and post Clasicos. It’s quite interesting. It’s a shame because I know so many great cules (especially our darling wa-tishista! LV) and I don’t want to lump them in with those who are disrespectful. I think it’s important for the players and staff to set a good example for the fans. We’re two down, two to go, people – let’s keep it civil.

Cups never come back looking the same. Every Jeweler knows that. Take the DFB Pokal – that thing entered the Leverkusen dressing room and came out looking…like an entirely different cup – and to this day the thing is still crooked.

I think the excitement about what happens to the silverware is part of the allure and excitement!

They actually interviewed the Jeweler before the game. He says he worries about the cup – but not too much because you can’t control what happens to it.

My favourite part of the whole thing – the fact that the Real Madrid website hasn’t mentioned it. It’s like a North Korean daily sometimes.

“It’s like a North Korean daily sometimes.” LOL!!!! So, so true! I’ve been waiting for some comment, anything – from Mou at least, but nothing.

i have a question. what on earth are our boys wearing in tonights game???

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 23, 2011 at 12:10 pm #

Was that a rhetorical question? They’re wearing their blue away jerseys with white shorts.

      • maddy April 23, 2011 at 12:12 pm #

why though? both teams look like they’re a part of a very uncool version of wizard chess?

        • headbandsandheartbreak April 23, 2011 at 12:20 pm #

There is a la liga rule that that the shirt or shorts can’t match the opposing team – valencia’s wearing their home kit which has blue shorts so we can’t wear our full away kit.

      • maddy April 23, 2011 at 12:20 pm #

why do their shirts have fluorescent green like the training shirts?

        • headbandsandheartbreak April 23, 2011 at 12:26 pm #

::shrugs:: dunno – this year’s design I guess – I’ve had the away jersey since the beginning of the season and it came that way. How about that Benz goal?! Whooooo!

          • maddy April 23, 2011 at 1:58 pm #

oh i didnt know that rule about the kits. benzema was great. it was a weird game. i’m really happy for higuain and benz and kaka, but it looked like we got lucky cause of bad valencia defending. still not bad for what is basically our B team. i wish a few more of our regulars had the chance to walk through the guard of honour though. they deserved it.

            • headbandsandheartbreak April 24, 2011 at 12:36 am #

I don’t think we exactly got lucky – we played well, but yeah, their defense was a mess today. It was kinda shocking. They are a good team.

i do hope benz gets the nod ahead of adebayor on wednesday. i’m not too impressed with adebayor on the the field.

agree- that quiet frenchman’s definitely grown on me, and i dunno if my heart’s got enough room for anyone else right now, esp not when it’s exploding with joy about Chelsea’s own quiet striker… 😀

  4. maddy April 23, 2011 at 3:18 pm #

oh i get it now! they’ve got different suits for la liga and champions league. UCL is all purple. la liga has the fluorescent green. thanks to stupid finals i havent been able to watch a la liga away game since jan until today. sorry for taking this post off on a tangent 😛

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 23, 2011 at 7:18 pm #

No worries. Yeah, we have three distinct colors of uniform – white home, blue/green away and purple champions league away (we also have a white champions league one). Obviously, we play in all white whenever we can being Los Blancos and all. 🙂

I think every cup/trophy hasbeen dropped/lost–that’s why there’s replicas/insurance. The Stanley Cup (hockey) has a person that travels with it everywhere & each team member gets to take it home for 24/48 hrs (cant remember for how long). It just seems funnier when Sergio’s involved. I like watching both Real & Barca, both are 1st class teams. BUT NO SAMI!!! I’m not sure I can deal with that!!

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 23, 2011 at 10:16 pm #

I miss Sami too, but I really want him to get better! It was a bummer not to have Mesut, Sami and Sergio today. I’m glad others got a chance to play – always important – but I’m especially attached to those three (heck, we wouldn’t have a blog without ’em!) so I missed them a lot.

It seems natural that cup would get dropped. Did you see the hockey footage that was part of the AS video? Hilarious!

  6. Cosi April 23, 2011 at 11:22 pm #

Hah, I had so much trouble scrolling away from that first pic to even read the defense of El Matador that I had to go watch me some of that dance again. Twice. lol!

Hopefully Mou’s exclusion of Sergio from the Valencia game can blunt the press’ attempts to crucify him, at least until the next Clasico on Wed. Whatever, all you ppl are just jealous that he can wield a hot pink cape and look hot! 😉

    • Cosi April 23, 2011 at 11:29 pm #

Just got this gif from a comment from Una’s blogpost “Sergio, what have you done?!”:

With the bad quality it’s even more exaggerated- CHECK OUT MARCELO DANCING LIKE A LUNATIC!!!! lol this whole ordeal is priceless!

      • maddy April 23, 2011 at 11:32 pm #

honestly, even if sergio hadnt dropped it, i doubt the cup would have been fit for display at the bernabeu. with all the mad festivities it was bound to get bruised somehow.

  7. Mais April 24, 2011 at 6:15 am #

Okay, first off, I just want to say that even though I’m EXTREMELY biased (yes I admit it) I must say that I am just flabbergasted at how much people are critising him for dropping the cup!! It’s not like he did it intentionally! I mean yeah okay we all loved that he dropped it, we laughed at stuff like this –> http://teamramosbr.tumblr.com/post/4848847452/loool but seriously I think it’s enough and I’m SURE he got enough crap from the press and other people already. And question: apparently Iniesta dropped the World Cup last year. How come nobody said anything then?! He’s also clearly taking it all in a joking manner (like it’s SUPPOSED to be taken) with the whole ‘it jumped out of my hands!’ thing, but people just don’t get it. Stay strong Sergito! And just know this: even if you stomped on the cup intentionally in front of a bajillion cameras, I’d still love you.

  8. AnnaBuena April 25, 2011 at 2:07 am #

Awww, i’ve been gone 5 days after our win against Barca without a clue how the cekebration went and this is what I come home to. Honestly, when I foundout Sergio dropped the cup I found it funny. He didn’t mean to do it, the team was just overjoyed with their win. And we all know how Sergio is and how Marcelo is, put them together and something’s bound to happen. Come on now, give Sergio a break and let him enjoy the victory with his team. Don’t taint it, people! I love you, Sergio! Don’t ever change!

  9. suzanne April 25, 2011 at 8:37 am #

it’s so rediculous that there needs to be redeeming done…like the guy did it on purpose?! some people’s children…anything to find someway to belittle madrid, i guess.

We love you sergio. i still laugh to this day about it. and it would somehow all be less funny if it were someone else who had done it. i know i for one would’ve never even said anything had any other team done this. and yet we have cruel comments on a certain website that i will never return to about how we’re “so unused to winning” and we need to know the value of a trophy. rolls eyes. poor sergio. kisses huney!!
