Doucheweed of the Day: Sergio Busquets (He Earned It, Peeps)

29 Apr

Okay, as you all know, I’m all about fair here, but this? This is not fair. It’s appalling. As if his diving wasn’t bad enough, here’s video of of Sergio Busquets calling Marcelo a “mono.”  That means “monkey,” y’all.  Busquets, you shamed yourself, your team and your fans. No one is going to defend your racist ass over this one. You owe Marcelo – and everyone else – an apology. To me, this isn’t a Barca vs. Real Madrid issue. This is an issue of a flat out racial slur and Busquets is bang out of order. Fuck him. UEFA, you need to act on this and other racist bullshit, no matter what the team.  I’m just disgusted over how bad this whole El Clasico thing is getting. Real/Barca, get your fucking shit together.

This information was originally over on ONTD_Football and I thank notoriousjk for bringing it to my attention. I had my head all up in the grad school reading tonight and missed it.

UPDATE: If you would like to express your outrage, drop an email to Platini and his cronies at info@uefa.com. I’ve already sent one. You can also email FC Barcelona at oab@fcbarcelona.cat. Please remember to be respectful and civil in your emails (but I know you will). Take the high road, unlike Busquets.

Unbelievably disgusting. He gets himself caught in his dives and now his racist persona is out in the public. What the heck is he going to say to his black teammates, how does this affect team unity?

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 12:55 am #

I know, right? He’s had to deal with ethnic slurs as a Catalan, you would think he would be a bit more sensitive. Also, his teammates have spoken out about how racism has affected them – how are they going to look him in the eye now. Because it’s a Real player, it’s acceptable? Yeah, I don’t think they’re going to agree with that. He could have called Marcelo an arsehole, a douchebag, anything, but he specifically chose a racial slur. That was his choice and he deserves to be penalized for it. From what I’m reading, there is an anti racism clause in the Barca contracts. Here is what someone wrote: “The clause stipulates that; ‘The player will not express or carry out, in any form, discriminatory ideas or acts, either during football games or in any club duties. The club will strongly condemn any discriminatory or racist act according to the agreement.’

So Barca is going to need to enforce that. I mean, there’s no defense for this. What a dickhead he is.

I am so appalled by some of the behavior that I’ve seen from both teams this week. I can barely stand to think of what is going to happen on Tuesday. I’m seriously worried about violence erupting between players, fans, etc. People need to seriously get a grip and calm this situation down. It’s escalating and could be extremely dangerous.

This is just disgusting. When I first saw it I was fuming for a good few hours. Busquets is just rifreakingdiculous. I just have no words to describe how I feel about him right now. Just when I started moving on and hoping and thinking about the return leg, this comes up and kills everything! Ugh..

I will just leave you guys (Lozil and Maddy particularly) with this treat. It helped me get through this. http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lkd8w9UeNe1qbyv8l.jpg
ps: I randomly love the length of Mesut’s pants. (Yeah, I’m weird like that). Also… THE HAIR! (major squeeage people).

        • maddy April 29, 2011 at 3:28 am #

i hope he shows up on tuesday. i really want him to have a good game. i also really want everyone to have a superb game tomorrow. like 10-0. that would help put this whole useless nightmare behind us. if we lose tomorrow, i think mou might self destruct.

          • Mais April 29, 2011 at 3:32 am #

Goodness! I hope so too! It’s bad enough The Serg is not playing! If ‘Sut doesn’t play either I think it’ll be ME who self destructs.

            • maddy April 29, 2011 at 3:34 am #

i hope he has a good game. all these tactical changes are messing with his head. he’s too new to deal with it.

And too adorable. Pretty much unrelated but I just wanted to state that.

yeah marca had a video of that. there was a whole load of spanish in it but the gist of the matter was that the swear word was one of mesut’s first in the spanish language 🙂

                    • Mais April 29, 2011 at 4:27 am #

Yeah I read about that but I never SAW him swear! What a sweetheart!

i understand about the uni thing. mesut’s first madrid derby was the night of my obs paper. i could only follow it on live commentary (and he scored that amazing goal from a freekick that night). hmpf

i think they are all real. there was a video on youtube of an interview where he cooked some fancy version of scrambled eggs. he took the interviewer on a tour of his apartment in germany (during his werder bremen days)

That was disgusting, who gives him the right? Racist punk!

I’d lose all respect for Barca all together if that was not dealt with!

This last two days have been a roller coaster, between what I have read online and what other fans are saying on other sites. I am with you on this one Tuesday is going to be world war 3 😦

  4. maddy April 29, 2011 at 3:23 am #

    1. the shirt says UNICEF, the lips say KKK.

    2. its appalling that in this day and age, educated people (especially those who are ‘role models’ to our youth’) should be so primitive in their regard for humanity. its disgusting.

    3. what exactly does ‘monkey’ mean? someone from the jungle? i’m lost when it comes to racist analogies. the other one is ‘banana’. i dont get it?

    • manie April 29, 2011 at 7:23 am #

I think it’s a historically derogatory way to refer to people of african-american descent, saying they are savage people or animals, etc. I remember coming across a website that discussed this in relation to the US pres election back in 2008, but I can’t find it now.

That being said, Sergio’s actions are completely abhorrent and I totally agree with everyone who expressed surprise, seeing that Eto’o, Alves, etc. have all discussed how terrible it is. Just sent my email to UEFA as well.

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 8:19 am #

re #3: Wow, seriously? I’m really surprised that people don’t understand that analogy.

It implies that black people are like apes. Subhuman. Not as evolved as the white man.

In some countries, (for instance, England, where I used to live), other people of color (Indian, Pakastani, Arabic), etc. are considered (and often self-identified) as black, so it’s not just African-Americans who have had this slur used against them. Offering someone a banana (like what happened to Roberto Carlos in Russia recently) implies that they are a monkey.

It’s just reprehensible. Busquets needs to be prosecuted.

      • maddy April 29, 2011 at 8:24 am #

oh okay. i’ve never heard of people being called monkey or the banana being used, outside of football. there arent many africans where i live, but there were hundreds in my college and such a ridiculous analogy never came up. my cousins/friends and i are always calling each other monkey/donkey, but we actually mean you fool/dunderhead.

        • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 8:44 am #

Donkey, yes – I even use that, but monkey? Never. It’s like saying the N-word. It’s hugely offensive (especially here in the US). As I said, it’s not only directed at Africans, but can be directed at dark skinned people of all lineages.

          • maddy April 29, 2011 at 8:48 am #

i guess the same word could have different meanings in different cultures. you call someone a paki in england, you’ll be dragged to jail. i lived in pakistan for 6 years and there ‘paki’ is nothing more or less than a shortened form of ‘pakistani’.

  5. maddy April 29, 2011 at 7:37 am #

at the end of this season, i think we have a lot to be proud of. Copa Champions, made it to the semi’s in UCL and lost to UEFA. only down side would be la liga, but i dont think we did too bad for a new side with so many young key players in their first season in spain. HALA MADRID

  6. Barbara April 29, 2011 at 7:43 am #

I read somewhere (so if its true or not who knows) that Mesut was making a Turkish dish that apparently is his favorite–looks like its vegetables & eggs scrambled together. Looked pretty tasty (both the cook & the dish)

uefa has needed to step into the ring on this issue for a while. i mean, who’s running that place? sepp blatter?

this whole circus has been shameful, but this? this? beyond words and beyond fuming.

  8. suzanne April 29, 2011 at 8:29 am #

i thought i couldn’t get anymore disgusted than i already was. i cannot effing believe he did this. i never liked his theatrics, but this is so much worse than flopping around like a fish. this is….god, there’s not even a word for how disgusted i am. if barca and uefa don’t do something about this, i’m done. not with madrid, but with any other variation of football. i never really disliked barca until this year. i didn’t like that they got in the way of us being #1 all the time 🙂 but i respected them. that is long, long gone now. and a lot of neutrals are beginnning to feel the same way.

sergio, you need some serious help, dude. that is NOT ok in any language, country, mentality. off to email

  9. maddy April 29, 2011 at 8:34 am #

how i used to love barca when thierry henry ran the show. memories…

  10. headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 8:34 am #

Okay, this is going to seem hypocritical coming from me but I have to get this off my chest. I woke up this morning and saw 30 some odd comments for this thread and I got excited. I thought “Whooo! Everyone is as angry as I am! They are all going to be writing notes to UEFA and Barca. We’re going to have a good discussion of racism in the sport!” and then there were a ton of comments squeeing over Ozil, etc. I was disappointed. Yes, I know this is a website about squealing over hot men, which we can pretty much do in every other thread here and yes, I know the intention was to take our minds off the horror, which I appreciate BUT, I don’t *want* my mind taken off this. I want it to resonate and I want to stay angry and I want to take action. I want this shit to STOP. I’ll squeal a bit later and all over this fucking blog, but right now, I would really, really like it if we could take a minute to reflect on this and if you think that what Busquets is wrong, PLEASE, make your voice heard. Nothing is ever going to change if we don’t make it happen. If you love this game, if you are outraged, SAY SOMETHING. We can drool later. PRIORITIES, WA-TISHISTAS!

I’m looking into finding a place where we can have a squealing free for all and to house all the pix/gifs, etc. but I would really appreciate if, for once, in this post, we could stick to the topic at hand. This is serious business, peeps, we’ve got tons of other places on this blog for fun. Let’s make this comment section a place for education and a call to action.

    Just my two cents.

    Lozil

    • maddy April 29, 2011 at 8:40 am #

i apologise. all his fault, he invades my every waking moment.

      furious email sent (no expletives).

honestly, even though i really want UEFA to kick his butt out of football, spain, civilised existence, UEFA/FIFA seems to have taken a soft stance against racism in the recent past. re: events in russia and italy…clubs havent really been taken to the cleaners.

      • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 8:47 am #

You’re right – they haven’t been taken to task and they should. If people don’t protest, they will just continue to give lip service to campaigns to combat racism, homophobia, etc. while not really doing anything about it.

RFEF needs to be taken to task as well. Those assholes never do anything about incidents in Spanish stadiums.

        • maddy April 29, 2011 at 8:50 am #

spanish FA is just as pathetic as english FA. i thought pandiani should have been penalised for calling ronaldo a retard. they seemed pretty okay with the issue.

          • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 8:52 am #

They are also okay with racist chants, lasers, additional balls on the pitch and bottles knocking out Iker. They are a bunch of corrupt douchebags.

            • manie April 29, 2011 at 9:32 am #

I think what the Spurs did with respect to the racist Ade chants was respectable. They had a phone number and website where you could report racist chants if you heard them. I’m not sure how well-utilized they were, but I fully applaud those efforts.

I think the footballing authorities really need to step it up with actions rather than empty words.

    • GinaM April 29, 2011 at 1:46 pm #

Sorry was so drained from online posting yesterday I did a half comment. You are 100% right this is disgusting, I think while Real Madrid is starting a campaign against Barca for UEFA to investigate this should be added too. How far do you think this whole thing will go?

  11. maddy April 29, 2011 at 9:00 am #

if you ask me, they should look into pepe’s red card and, if proven there was no contact, they should take action against the referee too. that’ll show them not to made dumbass blind no good decisions again. and how about some video replay before a major decision huh? when are you planning on entering the 1900s Blatter?

  12. Mais April 29, 2011 at 9:01 am #

I just want to clarify something before I apologise. I just want to make it clear that though most of the side-tracked posts were mine I want to emphasise that I did send the email and have been spreading the word and am 1000% still fuming. That said, I’m very sorry about diluting the effect of the post. I don’t know how that slipped my mind. Please feel free to erase all my above comments as I’m the one who started this. Thanks for the reminder, and again, I apologise.

  13. Maisoun April 29, 2011 at 9:37 am #

I really dont think I can put into words how angry I am over this. I watched the vid last night & really couldnt believe Marcelo was subjected to such racism & hate AGAIN and this time by fellow athlete. I am so disgusted with the fucking waste that is Sergio Busquets that Im embarrassed to say that he’s is part of a NT that I support & love. As someone who has been on the receiving end of racist comments & hate, I can say that such words cause more anger than hurt, so I hope that Marcelo & the team he is a part of, are angered enough to seek punishment for Busquets. I’ll be sending my emails to UEFA & FCB today and praying this incident isnt ignored.

    • EM. April 30, 2011 at 5:59 am #

It honestly breaks my heart how Marcelo doesn’t react to this, that he’s gotten used to it because there is nothing he can do about it and those who can won’t.

Sorry about Busquets letting you down. I know it can be very disappointing. Happened with me and Cannavaro. I adored the man then he had to go and make homophobic comments.

  14. AnnaBuena April 29, 2011 at 1:32 pm #

So much worse than him feigning a fall every time someone gets near him on the pitch. I feel for Marcelo. We will soon find out if FCB is really serious about their campaign against anti-racism. And I hope the big guys of UEFA will not turn a blind eye on this matter.

    Email sent.

  15. AnnaBuena April 29, 2011 at 1:35 pm #

Sorry, I meant…We will soon find out if FCB is really serious about their campaign against RACISM…

Disgusting, hateful behavior. Plain and simple.

Can anyone link to a video that’s still up? By the time I saw this post, it was already taken down.

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 6:37 pm #

Andrea – I found another link and fixed it. I also did a video capture, so it “disappears” again, I have a copy of it on my hard drive. I’ll keep re-posting the damn thing until something is done about it.

  18. Cosi April 29, 2011 at 9:57 pm #

    Hey gals (and guys),

I’m about to send this off, and thought I’d post it here as well. Maybe a template for people who are too angry to use civil language. It took me a while as i had trouble using civil language, and it’s a bit late into the night/early in the morning for me. So here we go. Pardon the melodramatic language! 😉 BesosX

    To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to voice my concern over the disturbing racial slur by the Barcelona player Busquets to the Real Madrid player Marcelo. I respectfully ask that you prioritize taking action against players who violate the universal call for respect for humans of all races and ethnicities, rather than taking action against managers and players, whose alleged offenses of a ‘war of words that pass certain limits’ do not cross the well-marked line into basic human rights.

“Say No to Racism” is a meaningless call to action if the very players who pose behind this sign do not practise those very words themselves. The incident of Sergio Busquets has been very clearly documented and well circulated across the world. It has angered people of all nations, demonimations, and cultures. His racial slur is undoubtedly reprehensible and demands prosecution. This is not a team issue, nor is it an issue involving anonymous fans or masked culprits; the player is known, his action is known, and you are in the position to uphold your standards and take action.

The urgency of your response to this blatant act of racism is vital. UEFA is a globally recognized and respected governing body, charged with the protection and preservation of European football’s standards for integrity and mutual respect. We look to you in confidence that justice will be done.

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 29, 2011 at 10:26 pm #

Terrific letter and template, Cosi! Thank you for sharing that. My greatest concern is that they address this and soon. They need to at the very least open up an investigation. There needs to be some sort of comment so that people know that it’s not being swept under the rug or ignored. It reminds me of the Joey Barton/Nando homophobic slur thing from last year. They said they would take action, open an investigation and nothing more was heard about it (to my knowledge). You could clearly read Barton’s lips calling him a “fucking poof” and grabbing his dick and telling Nando to suck it. C’mon people, how much more blatant does it need to be. I don’t give a shit who it is. It needs to be dealt with. This is bullshit. If it were reversed and a RM player did it, I’d be calling for their head on a platter. Remember how quickly I yanked Cannavaro off this site a few weeks ago when I found out that he had made homophobic statements? You know I mean what I’m saying.

      • maddy April 30, 2011 at 4:53 am #

oh no cannavaro? thats sad. i thought he was the only class left in italian football ( you know with stunners like ballotelli, materazzi (why do i keep calling him maserati???)

  19. moviefashion April 30, 2011 at 12:53 am #

    Hi Girls.
    Sad and necessary post.

Although I deeply hate Busquets, I choose give him the benefit of the doubt the first time I saw the video. Different for other people, I couldn’t see him clearly saying the word MONO, I just saw “MO”… And as much as I hate this player I would rather believe that all this controversy was just a big misunderstanding. Its insane to realize that a player who saw his colleagues suffered with this type of abuse could do the same with an opponent. But the suspicious body language, the absolutely silence and the mysterious disappearances of the video are like a confirmation of the crime…

Now, I don’t really feel angry. I’m just pure disappointed. Not only with Busquets (how he dared?!), but with the whole situation. With the club because this is the moment to BARCELONA prove that they are “more than a club”, giving an immediately statement about the episode, saying that is wrong and disgusting and Busquets, born and raised in La Masia, should know better than anyone that this type of behavior is not tolerated (morally and contractually) at a club as Barça.

With UEFA because this is the time to do something huge and unforgettable about it, send a message to everybody involved in sports actives that “respect” means more than just a flag. But I can’t see this coming because UEFA really doesn’t care about serious subjects. And most of all, I’m extremely sad with MARCELO’S REACTION that show how normal this type of thing are in his life. This is the shit that I just can’t deal with it. Because we are in 2011 and its not “normal” that a jerk use racial insults to hurt another human being.

Sorry for the long post… Nice day to all!

    * Did you girls saw the “barçastuff” message that says that the whole thing is another manipulation of Madrid media?… I have no words!

    • Mais April 30, 2011 at 1:20 am #

Hey there, I agree with everything you said but I have to say I saw the word ‘mono’ very clearly. And the way he hid the whole thing behind his hand was screaming SUSPICIOUS! And the way he said it too, like a 12 year old kid calling another one fat. Just revolting. About Marcelo’s reaction, I was surprised at how he pretty much did nothing, but then I remembered that if he HAD done something, the ref would’ve booked him FOR SURE. I mean, we all saw how he was giving out cards like party hats at a birthday celebration. So Yes, if I were Marcelo, I’d do the same thing. Barcastuff can stuff their resolve in a place I won’t be mentioning. How disgusting!

    • EM. April 30, 2011 at 6:07 am #

I agree with the jist of your post but not the initial part — I’m pretty certain he said ‘mono’ and several native Spanish/Catalan speakers (some of them Cules, believe it or not) have confirmed it. That he deliberately tries to obscure the camera’s view is a deal-clincher, IMO. He isn’t throwing around a playground taunt.

As for Marcelo’s reaction, I agree. I would have torn Busquets a new one then and there but then again, Marcelo is the same player who smiled when the Atletico supporters racially abused him. It is disappointing and unfair that he has to be used to it or that Etoo has to keep his family away from the matches. UEFA is a disgrace.

While Busquets’ actions don’t represent the Barcelona team, what Barcelona does now will speak volumes about whether their anti-racism campaign (and the anti-racism clause) is just talk.

      • moviefashion April 30, 2011 at 10:15 am #

I know girls. You are right, but the first time I saw the video, I couldn’t understand. Everybody was so sure about what he said, but I have doubts in the first time. Actually, I think I was in denial. I know he is a dirty player, but this… This is too much!

I couldn’t believe that he would dare to do something so disgusting. Like was said in the firsts comments, he could choose so many insults, but he choose the racial slur and was so deliberated that he covers his mouth and his teammates Alves and Keita were on the field. It’s beyond my understanding. I feel terrible about the whole situation.

  20. Malik April 30, 2011 at 7:57 am #

this sort of racism slur is what ruined the beautiful game, this is beyond football rivaly. it’s absolute disgrace to all human being.
