You Know What’s Not Hot? This.

17 Jun

Okay, I’m a long reformed smoker (I quit before I’m sure some of you were born) and I realize that it is a personal choice and I know that he is a grown ass man no matter how Bambi-like he looks. However, I gotta say, the next time I see Ozil, my absolute favorite player, out of breath or unable to play a full 90, I’m going to be looking askance at him. Your body is a temple, boo. An out-of-this-world talented one, may I add. Why on earth would you do something that would harm it and make you less efficient at playing the game you love?! Ugh. Not loving this in the slightest. Hey, I’m sure Real would splash out to get you some smoking cessation hypnosis, you know. Give it some thought, would you?

If only smoking wasn’t smelly and bad for your health, because I’ve always found it sexy.

pissed me off big time. i hope its a one time dumbass move. he’s very career driven, so i’m hoping he realises what regular smoking would do to his stamina and breathing capacity. his endurance level could do with a boost as it is. i hope mourinho saw this pic and gives him a good smack when they get back to madrid.

btw, i’m loving the general lack of bikini clad females in the pic. okay, i’m a horrible person.

I’m a reformed smoker as well…. and I don’t like it either, however, I do find it sexy (if only it wasn’t unhealthy, expensive and a million other things…)

again, ew. but you guys can have your opinions! sry!

All I’m saying is that a woman/a man looks very sexy w/ a cigarette. I don’t smoke myself, I quit six months ago. 🙂

i hope this pic causes a minor shitstorm (and he is forced to publicly address it. THAT’s how disappointed i am. remember when a tabloid accused cris of partying and drinking when he was excused from man united due to injury? cris fired back saying he would never do that. that’s a professional.

even if he’s only smoking during vacation (assuming), it’s still a big NO! as in NO!!!

  6. Andrea June 17, 2011 at 2:12 pm #

I’m a social smoker. It looks like Bambi is too. I’m sure he is only doing this because he’s on vacation and with his (smoker) friends that he never sees during the season.

Doesn’t make it right…but *shrugs* enjoy it while you can, bb. Your lungs will be burning when it’s time to get back to training!

I am extremely disappointed in Mesut and also echo your sentiments as a result. As a role model, I lost a little bit of respect for him knowing that he smokes… I was also reading that he’s been smoking since circa. 2008 or something like that. Oh dear…

    • headbandsandheartbreak June 17, 2011 at 3:58 pm #

It’s not really a role model issue for me, it’s more of a health thing. I can’t imagine it helps him to function well at the elite level he’s playing at. He’s an amazing player, but stamina has been an issue for him. How much better would he be if he was stronger and had more lung capacity, you know? If he’s an occasional social smoker, it wouldn’t be great, but might not affect him so much, but if he’s a regular smoker? That’s definitely got to be affecting his performance.

I hope Mou kicks his ass on the training field next month! I had wondered why such a young, agile athlete couldn’t last through a whole match. I assumed it was due to differences between leagues, but this explains it.

    Wag of my finger, Mesut!

  9. Maddi June 17, 2011 at 4:35 pm #

Mesut what are you doing!?!?! I really just want to reach through my computer screen, snatch the cigarette out of his mouth, and thwack him on the head.

And he’s been smoking since 2008?!?! WTF!? He seriously needs to take better care of himself. I know that he’s only in his early 20s and may not realize what he’s doing to himself. But I really don’t want such a talented career to be cut short because of such irresponsible behavior. UGH

I remember reading somewhere that Pele once tried a cigarette, but then his father told him that it would smoking would shorten his career, so he never smoked again. I really hope someone can get Mesut to stop.

Calm down people! It could be because I’m German, but a single cigarette is hardly bad for you. I get through a pack a year myself (keep them in the fridge so they don’t dry out).

He played more games than anyone else this year, all but two International Games, runs 12K a game – he’d scarcely be able to do that if he smoked regularly.

I, personally, approve of the odd cigarette (hence the pack a year I get through). I am always horrified by overly-Puritan attitudes – teetotalers freak me out for example. Nothing is bad for you in extreme moderation.

    • headbandsandheartbreak June 17, 2011 at 6:36 pm #

I’m hardly a Puritan, a teetotaler or an alarmist (I mean, you’ve read this blog, right?) 😉

However, he *has* been criticized for his lack of stamina, so you would think he wouldn’t do anything that would interfere with his game.

But I will concede that most things are fine in moderation. We don’t know if he is a regular or social smoker. Fair enough. I do know athletes who regularly smoke and can keep up a strong pace, so that’s not really an indicator if someone could get through a season or not. It’s certainly not recommended though.

      • Jenny June 17, 2011 at 7:41 pm #

Oh I know you’re not – 🙂 It was more of a “I’ll be smoking a cigar when I visit Dad on Sunday and I am justifying it to myself” sort of typed-out thought!

Actually, I’m fairly certain he almost never smokes because we’d have seen pictures of him doing it before now (he’s photographed everywhere he goes) and because it doesn’t look to me like the one in his mouth is actually lit! Could be the picture quality – but there’s no smoke.

  11. GinaM June 17, 2011 at 6:42 pm #

haha maybe he’s one of those people who are trying to quit so he just puts it in his mouth without actually smoking! Kidding 😛

It’s hard to imagine a sports player would be able to play 90 mins and be a smoker, maybe it’s just like a social 1 every few months deal? Or maybe even peer pressure hahahaha

  12. maddy June 17, 2011 at 10:55 pm #

smoking is something that isnt alright even in moderation, hence the damaging effects of passive smoking. he’s in the company of a bunch of other guys who are smoking, so he’s getting plenty of second hand smoke as it it. there are absolutely no positive effects of smoking, so why do it at all.

if the cigarette is unlit, and he only has it in his mouth to god-knows maybe look cool, seriously, grow up dude! you’re 22, not 9.

i really hope he isnt smoking – regularly/occasionally/socially or otherwise. he’s a public figure and is a role model to millions of kids. and it is bordering on careless to voluntarily jeopardise his career when many have the hope of seeing him play at this level for the next 10 years.

this is why i love the work ethic of cris. madrid medics say he’s so fit he’ll be playing for another 10 years atleast. he claims to consume no alcohol, and for all his stardom, lets face it, he rarely parties during the season.

i’ve always said mesut needed to hire a proper PR agent to advise him on certain public situations. i hope he addresses the picture with an explanation on his facebook account soon.

i do not wish to offend any current smokers on the blog. this is merely my opinion as an avid supporter of mesut ozil.

      here here.
smoking is a public health epidemic, second only to obesity and it’s plethora of devastating health effects. Lots of people in the US smoke, twice as many do in Europe. It’s an old world habit that has not died out and it doesn’t surprise me in the least when I see European athletes smoking. As regrettable as it sounds, they commonly roll their own, and don’t even know the meaning of the word filter. They laugh at our sissy @ss US cigarettes.

Cristiano has a private club in his house and a private DJ and he does organize parties. If he takes part in them or not that’s another story. 🙂

Is it me, or does the guy on the extreme left kinda look like Marco Boriello??
