Bits & Bobs: Vacation Snaps, Transfer Rumors, A Birthday, Drama & More

4 Jul

Hey y’all – I’m spending my 4th of July having a good long rest, so this post is going to be a quickie. I’m recovering nicely, but I’m going to work from home this week because I’m still not 100%. First up, a big feliz cumpleaños to Real Madrid (& football) legend Alfredo Di Stefano who is celebrating his 85th birthday today.

Iker spent his weekend barbecuing with friends in Navalcruz and posted this spiffy little picture on his Facebook page. He’s looking tan and hunky, isn’t he?

The big drama du jour was Marca saying today that Mou wants to take away the captain armband from Iker and give it to a midfielder. I have to say,  I don’t believe this for one second. Mou is not a stupid man and he knows how important Iker is to both the team and fans.  Taking the captain armband away from Iker would cause an enormous amount of ill will. I don’t think he would risk it. Una says it way better than I ever could here. In the same post, una translates the most recent Sahin interview – definitely worth a read.  AS continues the trend of posting absolutely HIDEOUS photos of Sahin.

That is just…disturbing. The guy is seriously hot – we’ve seen plenty of candid pictures that show that, but these posed pictures always look so awful. Ugh.

Still more vacation pictures have surfaced. Man, I want to be a famous footballer and jet all over the place. Wouldn’t that be awesome?

Jailbait! tweeted this from Rome. He’s at the Fountain of Trevi with his girlfriend Cristina and his even more jailbait-y brother Miguel.

Here’s Nando and Pepe Reina taking a banana boat ride. For what purpose, I couldn’t tell you. I hear it’s great fun, but you’re riding a giant banana. Considering the preponderance of football slash fans, I’m not sure pictures of some of our favorites ‘ballers straddling a giant phallic symbol is going to be helpful for anyone’s psyche. Also? Looks hella silly.  I’m not sure if this picture is from when Nando was last in Ibiza or if he’s back there again. I can’t keep track of all these footballers and their beach hopping. Pepe – didn’t you just have freaking surgery recently? Should you  really be banana boating? I just had surgery and my doctor said I can’t overtax myself or lift heavy things for at least a month. I’m pretty sure that he would frown on me riding on a boat where they try to flip you over and stuff. Just sayin’  Well, be careful out there, boys.

Watishista! Maddy found two new pix of Mesut soaking up the sun in Miami. In the first one, he’s got his “I’m really tough and you’d better watch out. Honestly!” snarl on and in the second, he looks good enough  to make a meal out of.

Meanwhile, back in the “real” aka non-beach world, business is going on. Most of the EPL is back to training today. The big news is that Cesc showed up for training at Arsenal! There’s still speculation that Madrid and Barca are battling over him, but hey, at least he was at training, which is more than can be said for Benfica’s Fábio Coentrão, who didn’t show up to his teams training in  Switzerland and is reportedly in Madrid right now finishing negotiations on his Real Madrid contract. Rumor has it that everything may be tied up today.

Also signing a contract today? Arsenal’s Gael Clichy who is moving over to Manchester City.  A 2009 quote from Gael: ‘I really believe if you are a player who thinks only about money then you could end up at Manchester City’  Erm, that’s a little awkward now, isn’t it? Well, we’ve all said things that come back to bite us in the ass later. Personally, I excel at it.

Tottenham is back to training today as well and Rafa van der Vaart tweeted a hunky picture of himself training. I highly approve of his habit of posting pictures of himself looking sweaty and yummy in the gym. Carry on, Rafa! (Nice tan, boo!)

And finally, our pals over at Red Card Homophobia are targeting Jack Wilshere in their most recent Twitter campaign. If you have a moment, please tweet the following:

@jack_wilshere Please RT @RChomophobia and help us in the fight against homophobia in football  #redcardhomophobia

They have also started a question of the week feature:

Today marks the start of Red Card Homophobia’s weekly question series. Every Monday there will be a question related to homophobia in football posted on our LJ, Facebook, and Twitter pages. At the end of the week we will pick the best responses to the question and publish them on our website,

This week’s question is:

Have you ever heard homophobic chants or comments at a match? If so, what was the reaction and response of those around you. Would you/Did you feel comfortable confronting the person about what was said?

I adore them both and it’s so cool that they got to spend some time together. I’m sure the kids were happy to see each other as well.
