Ballon d’Or Pics

9 Jan

Here are the pics from tonight’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, everyone looked lovely but….there would’ve been a LOT more lovely people up in there if our boys & coach were present! 😉

It was nice to see that some Madridistas could be a part of the ceremony though, Kay Murray from RMTV co-hosted the event and Zizou & Emilio Butragueno accepted the FIFPro World XI awards for Xabi, Sergio, Iker, and Cris. The FIFPro World XI winners were announced by Pele & he also presented the players with their awards.

FIFPro World XI Players: Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Nemanja Vidic, Daniel Alves, Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Lionel Messi.

Next up was the Presidential Award, which was presented to Machester United Manager Sir Alex Ferguson by FIFA Pres. Blatter. Before receiving his award, a video of testimonials from players and coaches was played – Mou: “I don’t call him Sir Alex, I call him boss.” Eric Cantona: “Winner.” Cristiano: “Great. Five stars” David Beckham: “Like a father figure to me.”

Sir Alex Ferguson had this to say about his award: “This is very much appreciated. No matter the honour I get, I feel its been the recognition for the 25 years of Manchester United. They always shared my vision and passion. I’ve been a very lucky manager. That makes Manchester United such a special club. The courage to play and the courage to try and win is more important than anything.”

Coach Bruno Bini of the French Women’s NT , Coach Norio Sasaki of the Japanese Women’s NT, and Coach Pia Sundhage of the United State’s Women’s NT were nominated for Women’s World Coach and Norio Sasaki was named the winner.

FIFA World Coach of the Year for Men’s Football was awarded to Pep Guardiola, he beat out Sir Alex Ferguson & our Mou Mou.

Pep: “I would like to share this award with Mourinho and Ferguson. It is an honour. And all the coaches around the world who share this passion. And also to the thousand of people than over 100 years have worked and develop Barcelona. It is a privilege to be part of such an incredible club. And finally, i would like to dedicate this award to Tito Vilanova, my assistant, my colleague, my friend who cant be here tonight. This is for you.”

Among nominees Messi & Rooney, Neymar won the FIFA Puskas Award for his goal against Flamengo…not for best hair, sorry.

This is what he had to say upon receiving his award, “I am very happy to be part of this party and have been compiting with this two great players. I’m very grateful to god and all you. Enjoy this party.”

The FIFA Fair Play Award went to the Japanese Football Association, accepted by Japanese FA President Junji Ogura and Homare Sawa.

My favorite award, mostly because they’re ladies but also because the winner isnt as predictable as the men’s award – the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year. Ladies represent! They all looked amazing.

Homare Sawa won the award and it was presented to her by Shakira and Sepp Blatter.

Little dirty man...I would be afraid

The final award of the night was the Ballon d’Or presented by Ronaldo. Messi, Xavi, & Cristiano were all nominated and the award went to……

Leo Messi. *sigh* Big surprise.

“It is a big pleasure to win the third, a big honor. I want to thank the team-mates, players and coaches that voted me. I want to thank my Barcelona and Argentina teammates, without them this would have been impossible. But most of all, I want to share it with Xavi: you deserve this as much as I do.”

I look at this next pic and think…Why arent there more women up there? Why isnt there more female awards? But at least it’s nice to see Homare Sawa up there, and Shakira for…wait why is Shakira up there again?

Until next year!

Seriously, shakira presenting an important award for a sporting achievement ruined it for me. I’ve nothing against her but this is not the teen choice awards. I feel sorry for sawa who deserved to have the award presented to her by a footballing legend like pele. Would it be okay if enrique iglesias presented the award to messi instead of pele. Would he appreciate it as much?

maybe we’ll see irina shayk presenting next years award. if it was gonna be a WAG last night the least they could do was nagore alonso. and even that would have been ridiculous. I’m just so mad for sawa. But happy she won of course. Kay looked radiant. And Henry scored on his return. What a night.

I thought it was awkward from the word go with her sitting next to Sepp in the audience and when he came out and shook his tushie around her? Just ugh. That was all about that old bastard’s wish fulfillment and nothing about appropriateness. That said, she is someone who is known all over the world and hey, since she did the World Cup song (and is dating Pique), I guess they figured that they had an “in” with her.

When Kay said “Shakira we know you have close ties with football…” I was like “OH NO SHE DIDN’T! KAY, YOU NAUGHTY…” and it felt like the whole universe was holding it’s breath (including Shakira) and then Kay continued talking about Shakira singing the World Cup song and you felt the whole room let out their held breath.” I have to admit I laughed my arse off.

I have nothing against Shakira except the whole PDA crap with Pique – that’s a bit much, but yes, I think that Homare Sawa deserves to have a world football legend present her award. She’s more than earned that.

Speaking of Homare, how awesome and beautiful did she look in her traditional kimono? I thought all three ladies looked fantastic. There should be a Puskas Award for the women as well.

Kay Murray did a fantastic job and looked amazing. Zizou is the very definition of yum. Butragueno looked…scary. But then again, he always does. Dude looks like he’s half serpent. I’m sorry – all respect for his history and abilities, but he looks like he might bite and be venomous.

Sawa is amazing and i am a big fan of kimonos and traditional garb. Maybe one day a South Asian will win it and we’ll get to see her rocking a sari/shalwar kameez. As a woman, i’m so proud of sawa standing there among her male counterparts as an equal and nothing less. This (2011) was a hard year for Japan and Japanese and for this team to have achieved all that they have after suffering an indescribable tragedy is truly remarkable.

Are we just going to ignore the fact that Messi is wearing a velvet suit? OMG, you’re no Sergio, Leo.

LOL @ Shakira presenting an award.

I mentioned the suit in my original ballon d’or winners post. Messi looks straight up Wonka-ified.
