Well, the awards are finally over. Zizou and Butragueño are representing Real Madrid as the rest of our team is readying themselves for the Malaga match tomorrow. So who were the lucky winners this year?
FIFA FIFpro World XI: Casillas; Alves, Piqué, Vidic, Sergio Ramos; Xabi Alonso, Iniesta, Xavi; Cristiano Ronaldo, Rooney, Messi.
Gee, the 11 players came from only 3 teams (Real Madrid, Barca, Manchester United). That’s a bummer. There are so many talented players out there. (I mean, no Robin Van Persie?) I’m very happy for our guys. Definitely deserved.
Sir Alex Ferguson won the Presidential Award. Mou and Cristiano had comments (courtesy of @espanafutbol)
Mourinho: “I don’t call him sir, mister, Alex or Ferguson. I call him boss”
Cristiano Ronaldo: “5 stars, great.”
Pep Guardiola won for Coach of the Year (as predicted by Mou).
Neymar (deservedly) won the Puskas Award for best goal of the year.
Homare Sawa (also deservedly) is the Women’s Player of the Year.
Messi is the Men’s Player of the Year, which he accepted wearing a purple velvet tux (did he raid Guti’s closet or something?) Listen, we all know the guy is a brilliant player but if someone from Barca had to win it this year, I would have much preferred Xavi. As you all probably know, I’m not a fan of Xavi’s big mouth, but I think he is an exquisite player and since he’s getting older (he’ll be 32 later this month), I would have liked to have see him win it. Cristiano came in second in the voting but man, what a season he had. Now that Messi has won it three times in a row, can he be retired from the running? Probably not. Oh well.
Mazel tov to all the winners!

I know I’m fed up with Messi winning it Xavi deserves it a lot more especially last year when he was a World Champion with Spain.
Considering Messi is persona non-grata with his national team, questionable decision IMO.
BTW – how close was the final voting on mens’ player of the year?
By persona non-grata – think missing in action scoring/impact wise!
Messi got 47.8% of the votes, Cristiano got 21.6% & Xavi got 9.2%. I personally was pulling for Xavi. Where’s the mid-field love?
