UPDATED: National Teams Training Round Up

21 May

The national teams are training again and all is well in the world. Updates on some of our faves within. First though, in happy news, Juanin and Nando are joining La Roja for the upcoming friendlies! (UPDATED: I added some new photos)

Spain add Mata, Torres to squad
(PA) Monday 21 May 2012

UEFA Champions League winners Fernando Torres and Juan Mata have been added to the Spain squad ahead of their upcoming friendlies against Serbia and Korea Republic, the Spanish football federation have announced.

The duo, who on Saturday helped Chelsea win the Champions League for the first time in their history, were initially absent from Vicente del Bosque’s 21-man squad along with players from Copa del Rey finalists Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao due to their club commitments.

However, the two forwards have now been called up by Del Bosque. A statement on the RFEF website read: “The national team coach, Vicente Del Bosque, has called up the Chelsea players Fernando Torres and Juan Mata. Both internationals will be join the squad on 25 May in St Gallen.”

The Copa del Rey final takes places on Friday night, while Spain face Serbia on Saturday in St Gallen, Switzerland, before meeting Korea Republic in Bern the following Wednesday.

Final squad revealed on Sunday
Del Bosque is set to name his final 23-man squad for UEFA EURO 2012 on Sunday. Torres and Mata were part of the Spain squad that won the FIFA World Cup™ in 2010 while Torres scored the winning goal in the final of EURO 2008.

However, whereas Mata has impressed for Chelsea this season, Torres has found life difficult at Stamford Bridge since his British record £50million move from Liverpool in January 2011 and that cast doubts on whether he would win a place in Spain’s EURO 2012 squad.

The 28-year-old, who was not in Chelsea’s starting line-up for their Champions League final, yesterday spoke of his disappointment at how his season went and is looking to discuss his future with the Blues ahead of the next campaign.

Another dilemma facing Del Bosque as he finalises his squad for Poland and Ukraine is the fitness of Barcelona striker David Villa, who has not played since before Christmas after suffering a broken leg. Barça captain Carles Puyol appears almost certain to miss out on the tournament after recently undergoing knee surgery.

I AM SO EXCITED! Really looking forward to them joining the squad on Friday.

Lucky fans that got to watch! I’d love to see La Roja practice. I missed my chance last year sadly.

France looked like they were in the midst of absolutely miserable weather for their training (much like it is in NYC today). Karim was heavily bundled.

Also suffering mightily was Germany who were also training in France. Ugh. Poor bebes! Lo0k at the keepers squeezing out their gloves!

Cacau wisely stays under cover

Meanwhile, apparently it’s always sunny in Portugal because Cris, Fabio and Pepe were having a ball in the sunshine.

On Friday, the Dutch National Team had a training and for some reason, they brought their wives & kiddies on the pitch. Be prepared for absolute adorableness.

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar with sons Axel (on shoulders) & Seb

Dirk Kuyt, wife Gertrude and son Aidan Benjamin

John Heitinga with kids Jezebel and Lennox

Wesley Sneijder with son Jessey

Wesley & wife Yolanthe: I’m surprised she’s not sinking into the pitch in those shoes!

Klaas-Jan and Seb (that eye looks ouchie!)

Tim Krul goofs around with a fake ‘stache

Artsy shot of the new Dutch masters!

Don’t know what they were up to but it looks like it was a fantastic day. I loved seeing all the families.

More as I find it! (Photos from RFEF.es, GF Sports and Daylife)

Cris looks GOOD in that green!

But he seems to be wearing his shorts disturbingly long (compared to usual, at least).

These pics are one of the reasons I love national team call-ups! RvP posted some photos on his twitter today from that ‘baby event’. Apparently it was a young vs ‘old’ game and young won.

Yes, RvP posted pics of the orange tents on the pitch where the kids camped, and they all got together to watch the Bayern v Chelsea CL final. So adorbs!

I can’t keep from grinning every time I see Benat in the Spain shirt. Less than 2 years ago his career seemed to be languishing in the Spanish 3rd division after failing to “make it” with Athletic Bilbao. He played his first game with Betis probably by sheer coincidence (he debuted only after all 3 of the first-team players in his position got injured) and transformed a more or less meaningless Copa del Rey game into a wonderful spectacle. And the rest is history 🙂 he’s been wowing the league ever since with his precise free kicks, clever passes, and overall shaggy likeability. I’m so happy for him!

Oh, and one more thing I forgot to mention. This might be something weird to say but, ever since I found out he shares a (tiny) apartment with his best friend and equally shaggy-haired Betis defensive midfielder Canas I’ve had a soft spot for them both. Their awesome bromance is kept alive by a healthy mixture of Canas’s gourmet cooking, Benat’s love for horror films, and Playstation.

OMG! They sound adorable! You’ll have to nominate them for the next Epic Bromance Month.

Thank you, Maddi! I, too have a soft spot for the Betis Boys. You are such a wealth of knowledge. Thank you for sharing those tidbits!

Feeling for the Frenchies and Germans. At least Benz is looking very cute in a knit cap.

So nice to see a lot of new faces in La Roja! Of course, the old reliable faces are a joy to see again.

I love how Sergio is all matchy-matchy with his headbands!

I was kind of disappointed with some of the portugal non-call ups BUT. But. The training kits look awesome. I’m a sucker for bright colors, especially on tan men. Ahem, Cris looks like he needs to hit the beach after the Euro trophy ceremony 🙂
