Updated: Goodbye Altintop

30 May

So he’s the first one out. Altintop is heading to Galatasaray next season, hopefully where he will get much more play time, bench life can’t be any fun even if you’re sitting on La Liga’s hottest bench. I wish him well in the coming season, GOOD LUCK ALTINTOP!!!

UPDATED: Now according to Marca, Altintop is denying that he has signed to Galatsaray (well, maybe he hasn’t signed yet, but he’s for sure on his way out).

I wish him well in Turkey. It must have been hard to come to Madrid to sit on the bench.

I’m mostly ambivalent about this. I never understood signing him in the first place, shame he spent so much time on the bench. At least now international duty will be somewhat less taxing for him, travel-wise.

We signed him because you can’t have bitchy, young, discontented players on the squad as your necessary bench players. Gago anyone?

Also: he was free. Also: he refused his salary for the first 6 months as he was recovering from injury.

That was nice of him. That was something I would NEVER do.

Didn’t know that he refused his salary while he was recovering – that’s pretty cool of him. I bet most people don’t know that. He takes an enormous amount of shit. The guy is a good player, he just had some rotten luck being injured for part of the season and then not being able to get onto the squad. We have an enormously deep bench. It’s hard enough to get a look in at the best of times. Do people forget that he won the Puskas?

I guess I’m just not a big fan. I’ve been watching him since he was at Schalke, never really took to him. I hope he’s happy in Turkey.
