Updated: Sergio Remembers Antonio Puerta On His Yahrzeit

28 Aug

In Judaism, there is a tradition of remembering a person on the anniversary of their death  (“yahrzeit”) and today Sergio tweeted some pictures in memory of his good friend Antonio Puerta who tragically passed away 5 years ago today. He posted this shot of them when they played together in Sevilla. So young, both of them.

Sergio has always remembered his friend, wearing a shirt with his picture at the 2008 & 2012 Euros and when he lifted the World Cup in 2010. He also has this tattoo on his arm with the Star of David for Puerta who was Jewish. UPDATED: I’ve seen someone linking this post elsewhere online as proof that Sergio is Jewish and I don’t want to be the source of any misinformation. So to clarify, Sergio & his family are Catholic. The Star of David tattoo is in honor of Antonio.

People can say whatever they want about Sergio, but I don’t think that anyone can doubt that he seems like a loving and loyal friend.

One of the saddest things about Puerta’s death at 22 was that his girlfriend Mar Roldan was 7 months pregnant at the time. Their son, Aitor Antonio Puerta Roldan, was born on October 23, 2007.

Here’s a shot of Mar & Aitor in 2010 and a more recent shot (from August 9th) of the nearly 5 year old Aitor with Alvaro Negredo when he visited the Sevilla locker room after the Antonio Puerta Memorial Trophy match.

If Aitor decides to play for Sevilla when he grows up, they have pledged to give him his father’s number (16).

i remember reading that and thinking it was the kindest, sweetest gesture (i have tears in my eyes just typing this!).

sergio, for all the flack and teasing people give him, seems like an incredibly loyal, loving decent friend — the type you’d really want in your corner when the chips are down. we should all be so lucky to have such people in our lives! 🙂

Jesus, dying on the pitch is a regular occupational hazard, isn’t it? It happens far too often. 😦

That’s really touching of Sevilla to save the #16.

I’ve always thought Sergio comes across like a very caring and thoughtful person. I remember the first time I saw him wearing the shirt he has for Antonio – there were definitely tears.
