410868_514651538566254_1774330712_oIt’s taken me hours to get this freaking post up. One work crisis after another. Sigh.

The birthday boy posted this adorable shot with Alba today and said the cake was courtesy of the “Family Callejon” aka Jose and Marta. (Arbetti, it’s so on!) Fabulous sex beard intact, Arbie makes 30 look soooo good. Albiol charmingly posted a tweet that translated to “Happy birthday to my friend @ aarbeloa17 you’re on the third floor … soon in the attic and no emergency exit 😉” NICE.

Real Madrid had a little video up in celebration of his birthday as well.

Arbeloa got hilariously sassy today on Instagram with a fan who mistook him for Granero. Speaking of our Pirate, he wished Arbie a happy birthday with this shot…

b4e117c060a211e2abce22000a1f96d4_7And said how nice it was to see Marcelo back on the field with this one… I’ve missed Marcelo so much (and Pirata).

@RMadridInfo posted a great little shot of Marcelo, Clarice, Enzo, Angel and Jorgelina. I think this is from when they went on their little hike back in December – looks like they are wearing the same thing as the pictures from then. Super cute though.

BA2GrpVCcAAsoPOThe mothership had a little piece on Sami today. So happy to see him getting some well deserved attention.

Khedira has broken his Real Madrid assists record
by Javi Våzquez

Against Valencia the German midfielder made his fourth assist of the season, improving on his stats from the previous two seasons

Sami Khedira has been of Real Madrid’s best players in recent weeks, both for his goals and his assists. On Tuesday in the Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg against Valencia the midfielder made his fourth assist of the season when he provided Benzema with the opportunity to make it 1-0, which the Frenchman did. With that assist, Khedira beat his best numbers in that aspect of his game since joining Real Madrid. In the 2010/11 season he made two and last season he made three. In the current season, after the 20 matches he has played in the league, Champions League and cup, the German international already has four.

Khedira’s good on field performances are also reflected in his stats in recent matches. Against Real Sociedad he made the assist for Benzema to make the score 1-0 and then scored himself to make it 2-1. In the next match, Khedira was on target once again against Celta when he scored his third goal of the season in the round of 16 second leg match of the cup. A week later, against Valencia, and also in the cup, the German made his fourth assist this season, confirming that he is in one of his best runs of form since joining Real Madrid.

After last Tuesday’s match against Valencia, Karanka confirmed this in the press room at the Santiago Bernabeu: “Sami has been in impressive form since his injury. It is great to see how he plays, how he gets into good positions up front and how he picks up balls at the back. He is an important player for us”.

In match day 2 of the group stage of the Champions League against Ajax he made his first assist of this campaign for Cristiano Ronaldo which sealed the win in Amsterdam. The second was also for the Portuguese in the match against Espanyol. Then followed Benzema, who has benefited twice from the German midfielder’s assists.

Adan was also featured on the website in an interview where he spoke of his relationship with Iker and the whole benching controversy.

Adan: “Anything that means playing more for the best club and in the best goal in the world is very important”
by Javier García

“My relationship with Casillas is great, he has helped me at all times and given me his support and trust”, said the Whites’ goalkeeper

Antonio Adan went as a guest to the 2013 Football Draft Technical Committee held at Las Rozas Football City. The initiative seeks to promote grassroots football by selecting the best young players on the national scene. The Real Madrid goalkeeper, who was elected in the gold team in the first running of the awards, spoke about his playing involvement with the media: “Anything that means playing more for the best club and in the best goal in the world is very important. I don’t look at who we are playing or what competition it is in, playing in the first place is the important thing”.

Real Madrid visit the Mestalla on Sunday to play Valencia in the league. Adan was asked whether he will be in the starting eleven: “I’ll train tomorrow and I will wait for the boss’ team sheet, that is who has the power to say who plays. I have no idea whether I will play or not and all I have to do is work hard over the coming days and wait for the line-up to be decided”. He rebutted the suggestion that he is Mourinho’s first choice for the rest of the season: “If the coach has already decided that I am going to play, then only you know. For me, playing at all is the important thing. Last year I played five or six matches. This year we are in January and I’ve already passed that barrier. Anything that means getting more pitch time is important”.

The Whites’ goalkeeper said that he appreciated the support of his teammate Casillas: “Our relationship is very good. I have already said that apart from being teammates, we’re friends. He has been great with me. Casillas is the captain of Real Madrid and Spain. He brings together all the values of a footballer and a teammate and has helped me at all times and given me his support and trust”.

When asked if the reason that he has been disrespected in the media has been because they are ignoring his brilliant career in the lower age groups of the Spanish national team he said: “That is not the reason. Many people have given their opinions, some good and some bad and sometimes opportunists and profiteers take advantage, but I keep myself away from all of that”. He would not specify if any opinion in particular had hurt him: “There have been all kinds of opinions, but I have stayed away from it. I speak with the coach and my teammates, whose opinions are the ones that I really care about. I haven’t really paid the rest much attention”.

PresentaciĂœn_FĂœtbol_Draft_2013 (1)The Real Madrid goalkeeper responded to the question of whether he felt used by the coach and his detractors: “Not at all, what the coach has done is pick a starting eleven that I was in and that’s it. There is no controversy. The coach chooses the best for the team and there are no arguments”.

He also denied that there was a confrontation between Cristiano and Mourinho after the match against Valencia: “This confrontation didn’t even happen, the coach gave an opinion, the player gave his and we are all adults. You can give different opinions even if they are opposed, always with the player showing the utmost respect towards the coach and the coach towards the player in a conversation”.

Finally, he referred to the Football Draft project: “It is an important prize for the academy players. It gives them motivation and encouragement when they’re fighting to achieve their dream. It is important to relaunch the Spanish youth academy, which is playing an increasingly larger role in Spanish football because of the crisis and we should be grateful that coaches, directors and other people have increasingly put their faith in youth academy players and given them their opportunities in the First Division”.

In other breaking goalkeeper news today, Victor Valdes informed Barcelona that he will NOT be renewing his contract (which expires in 2014) and his agent said that they didn’t need to even make an offer.

Iker kinda cracked me up today. He changed his cover photo, which was fine (who wouldn’t want 5 Ikers?!)

734665_534265919936971_1810686316_nBut he also seemed to think it was a good idea to post of a photo of Ozil getting kicked in the goolies saying “Que dolor!! Pobre Ozil!!” Yes, Iker, I’m sure that Mesut certainly wanted to be reminded of the moment that his dangly bits were nearly knocked out through his nose and he especially wanted to share that special moment with your 9 million+ Facebook friends. ::shaking my head::

541682_534297486600481_1896126092_nBut @NadeenAlk made the day all better by finding this HALF NAKED (!!) shot of Iker in the Head & Shoulders campaign. Thanks girl, you know how to cheer me up.

10Cp7w1He also posted the name of the artist who did this great portrait of him that we posted the other day so great work, Lisa Cuomo because that is AWESOME!

@eloshe2020 posted this shot of Lady Edith and Mrs. Lady Edith taking in a match between Croatia and Egypt at the Handball World Championship which is being held in Spain.

BA1peSfCUAAnvdmNagore posted some pictures saying she was starting the day in another country (and it’s obviously England since she’s reading The Times). That started comments of “XABI! COME BACK TO LIVERPOOL! AND STEVIE!” all over.

d76456e65fbb11e2b5f422000a1f9a34_79a011786601411e2b22b22000a1f96e2_7Lordy, how damn hot does that woman look? Straight up babe. There’s no denying it!

Kaka’s missus, Carol, got tongues wagging by posting this shot of them enjoying Milan and saying “Arivederci Milano… See you soon!” Soon, you say? As in at the end of the transfer window? Inquiring minds want to know.

caf6eba060d111e28c4722000a9f1966_7She also posted a shot with her hubby in an elevator saying she was remembering their first home in Italy when they got married 7 years ago. They lived in an elevator?!?!

32b27532603911e2bbd422000a1f9ab2_7She also posted some adorable shots with baby Isabella, who is helping mama in the kitchen. Her proud mami also announced that she had graduated to a big girl bed! Mazel tov!

BA1dVfmCQAA1hdfNice duck you got there Bebe Cesc! It reminds me of Pique…or Karim. I wonder why? 😉

Check out Cristiano’s bitchin’ new Nike Mercurial ad. Very cool!

I know we have a lot of Muslim watishistas and hijabis here. I stumbled on this great piece by Canadian footy player/writer Shireen Ahmed entitled “Off-record but on-field: Veil, Burka, Babushka or Bedsheet?” It was selected for The Best of Football Writing in 2012, which is compiled by A Football Report. Shireen’s blog Tales from a Hijabi Footballer is well worth a read. She is also the co-creator of the blog Muslim Women in Sports. You can follow her on Twitter at @_shireenahmed_

And finally, I need some help from our Finnish watishistas! One of my besties was born and raised in Helsinki. She just returned from the homeland and brought me a prezzie. Her friend works for HJK Helsinki and I am now the proud owner of a very cute team hat & mittens. What do I need to know about my new Finnish Premier League team? (She tells me that I have to support them now because they are her homies!) I do know one thing: I am incapable of pronouncing Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi properly after 3 pints of Guinness. I have the sneaking suspicion that I wouldn’t be able to pronounce it properly even without alcohol being involved. Tell all!

I guess Carol is quite enjoying the attention she got with her newest instagram photos. If it makes her happy….

I tried to figure out what’s on that cake, but I got no clue, profiteroles?

Hopefully there’ll be more shots of Iker’s H&S campaign soon >_>

Oh Lady Edith of the never changing face. After finishing Season 2 of Downton Abby, I gotta say that they kind of got that in common, since both of their faces aren’t very expressive. When’s Vanja’s baby due anyway?

“They lived in an elevator?!?!” – totally ruined my makeup! LOL

I nearly choked on my food!

Notice that every time it’s transfer season, Caroline gets all sentimental (or obsessed) with Milan?

5 ikers is always good! Cool ad for the boots

Shireen’s comment is interesting. I think I was aware of her blog, though I’d never read it.

Of course the solution to the hijab problem is simple: women should be allowed to wear it, but any nation that forces women to wear it at AWAY games in countries where it not required and the woman doesn’t want to wear it on the pitch (an Iranian visiting Canada, for example, who decides “I don’t want to wear this today at this away match away from my country which enforces a dress code”) would be banned from competition.

As a corollary: any country that fails to field a woman’s team, or whose woman’s team would be kicked out of FIFA could not field a men’s team.

That should solve the problem rather quickly.

Fuck it. I should work for FIFA.

Has anybody ever looked as good in a Head and Shoulder’s ad as our capi? I think not.

The KakĂĄ drama is killing me. I want what’s best for him and it’s been obvious for a while that means him leaving Madrid… but… I just… I mean I’m STILL not over Pirata. And now (probably) Ricky.

  6. cindy yin (@meridiansour) January 17, 2013 at 10:24 pm #

Sometimes, I worry about Iker’s sense of humor, he better be careful though, shadenfreude and all that. Though I highly doubt Ozi would do the same thing if it happened to his captain.

On a random note, a little old but have you seen this manip of Sernando (http://footballsoccerfutbol.tumblr.com/post/5071756528/via-jinmiya-on-weibo) yet? Really cracked me up good today.

I’ll really miss Kaka if he goes, but it is probably a good move for him. He’ll get more playing time, and he won’t be getting back on the Brazil team if he spends his season on the bench. Carol isn’t exactly being subtle though is she? Arbie + sexbeard should just be illegal, it’s really not fair. I’m STILL upset that Pirata left, it’s so sweet that he still follows Madrid closely. I really wish he would get more playing time at QPR 😩

    • CinematiqueChic January 18, 2013 at 5:18 am #

It really annoys me that every time I manage to turn on a QPR match Pirata is benched. Wasn’t the entire goddamn point of him leaving to go to a club where he would be played?

      • Anna January 18, 2013 at 6:18 am #

that’s exactly how I look at it! Apparently he’s got a hamstring injury atm but he was benched before then anyway 😩

      • Mehreh January 18, 2013 at 9:44 am #

i fly into this rage every saturday that i try to watch a QPR match and it is pirate-free. i do not like this one bit, pobre cito.

        • CinematiqueChic January 18, 2013 at 10:31 am #

So I now have this amazing image in my head of a madridista march on Loftus Road, where we’re all wearing this t-shirt:

          • Mehreh January 18, 2013 at 7:51 pm #

Can we make this happen? I’m dying over here!
