The Timing Could Not Be Worse

28 Jan

So I’m hesitant to even post something about this because we’ve got enough fucking drama already, but it does bear mentioning if for no other reason than you’ll be hearing about it ad nauseum over the next few days.  After FloPeezy gave a press conference chastising Marca for their bullshit, Sara Carbonero gave an interview to Mexican TV talking about all the discord in the dressing room. GREAT TIMING, SARA. Seriously, WTF?

A translation of one of her remarks comes via @RealEspartaEN: “Right now the squad is divided and we have to wait until the end of the season to see what happens, if Mou finally leaves because he has many war fronts open against him

Okay, perhaps not earth shattering, world moving shit, but it’s like throwing gasoline on the fire right now. I think that her speaking about this situation considering her relationship with our captain is just ill advised on so many levels. It’s a conflict of interest for starters and why inflame an already volatile situation? And who is suffering in the fallout? Iker.  Sadly, people have been hurling abuse  at him on Facebook and Instagram, suggesting that *he’s* a traitor, that he’s approved what Sara has said and she’s his mouthpiece (as if she doesn’t have her own mind?!), that he should “control her” (!!!!) and that he should step down as captain because he’s no longer worthy (holy fuck – what?!) It’s just mind boggling.

Considering the nature of what’s been happening lately, it seems to make sense that Sara might want to tread lightly or even avoid speaking on the subject at all considering her involvement with Iker. It also makes FloPeezy look like a bold faced liar. You really think he’s going to take that lying down? Because I don’t. Oy vey. That’s her partner’s boss. Did she ever consider that?

I know that she’s a reporter, blah blah blah, but again, I truly feel that it’s a conflict of interest. Whenever she comments on what is happening in the dressing room, people assume that she is sharing inside info from Iker, whether that is true or not. It creates an uncomfortable situation (especially for him). You would think avoiding the situation would be the smart choice – better to err on the side of caution, right?  Now poor Iker, who should be resting and recovering, finds himself in the middle of another brouhaha. Exactly what he needed. Sigh. I can’t believe that people are abusing him. She’s a grown ass woman, she should bear the consequences of what she puts out there, not him. That said, some of the things people are saying about her are reprehensible. I mean, calling her a whore over this? Really? That’s completely out of order. I’m not pleased about this but seriously, let the comment reflect the actual situation (‘conflict of interest’  or ‘poorly timed’ – yes; ‘Slut’ – absolutely not. WTF? Some so-called Madridistas really need to get a grip).

Every time we start to recover from one blow, another one hits. This season is just one big clusterfuck, isn’t it? (BTW,if anyone would like to do a full translation of the interview, it would be much appreciated.)

Your thoughts on the whole balagan? Personally, I’m testifying like Mary J. at the end of this performance. This one’s going out to you, Real Madrid, I love you, but you’re fucking killing me this season.

This season is giving me an ulcer. The drama is killing me. I’m going to go crawl into a blanket burrito. I’ll be there for the next five months, if anyone needs me.

Said this on Twitter- seems staggeringly opportunistic on her part. Whether it is or not, meh, I honestly don’t think it matters. This is the perception game.

Pretty crappy situation. I really want to know what she was thinking, but… meh. Damage done, so that doesn’t really matter either.

  3. pmpatrol January 28, 2013 at 10:44 pm #

ughhhhh! pasta sauce, girl don’t do us dirty! I don’t care if she is a reporter, being that she has a major conflict of interest in the matter she should stay away from the topic. Who knows if she is put up to it by her employers or what, but anyone in her position commenting on the supposed drama just draws more attention to it. By doing this she gave other reporters a backing on what they have been passing around.

    • headbandsandheartbreak January 28, 2013 at 10:48 pm #

It’s just…awkward, you know? I’ve had situations at work where I’ve had to recuse myself because it would be inappropriate for me to comment – I see this in the same light.

      • pmpatrol January 28, 2013 at 10:54 pm #

Exactly! another thought that just jumped into my head…. Most people try to protect those they love from unwarranted attention not magnify it.

All I know is I had been giving her the benefit of the doubt, but this gives me justification to not approve of her again.

    ¿¿¿POR QUÉ???

My god sometimes it’s better to say NOTHING! Our dear capi did not need this. WTF are you doing Sara? And I was just thinking that I would be alright with Iker finally settling down.

    • headbandsandheartbreak January 28, 2013 at 10:49 pm #

She’s getting major shit for this too – some of it normal, reasonable criticism – some of it over the top and out of control. Don’t think anyone benefited from her comments.

      • Katie Ann January 28, 2013 at 10:53 pm #

‘cept, in a twisted way, she still does because she’s all anyone’s talking about. I reeeeeally don’t want to think anyone plays the game that way, but I know they do (I worked in politics- enough said), so I just can’t help wondering if there’s a game she’s playing, or if she really didn’t think, or what…

      • Rose January 28, 2013 at 10:57 pm #

I don’t agree with the assholes who are hurling the inappropriate abuse at her, but dear god she deserves to be getting majorly criticized for this. And all I can think of is poor Iker injured and unable to help his team at such a critical time. And now his partner has just shat on everything. I’m sure he has enough trouble cleaning up Uno and Doce’s shit, he doesn’t need to be going around cleaning up Sara’s mess as well.

  5. Mehreh January 28, 2013 at 10:48 pm #

I find balagan to be the perfect word to describe this. I’m going to focus on what happens on the field and do some meditation.

I’d rather be thinking about what doce and uno are up to.

There’s a very nice gif of him flexing said booty going around tumblr at the moment. It’s brought me quite a bit of serenity. That and the video of CR jr. celebrating his daddy’s hat trick yesterday.

  6. em January 28, 2013 at 11:01 pm #

She obviously learned nothing from the LAST time she spouted off about things in the locker room.
    She’s young… So much to learn…
iker doesn’t deserve any of the ancillary bullsh!t. We all know that and so do the people who are spouting it. They are just hiding behind the anonymity of a keyboard and screen.

    • headbandsandheartbreak January 28, 2013 at 11:10 pm #

She’s 28, so you know, not *that* young in terms of her career.

      • La-la January 29, 2013 at 8:52 am #

What I find weird is that in many cases, inappropriate comments from Wag’s occur because they clearly haven’t had any media training.

ummmmmm…. so what’s Sara’s excuse in this case?

Or, and I may be being highly cynical here, or maybe just a bit of a cow, or does she, in some respect because of ‘other’ position as Capi’s partner, feel that she really is the world’s greated expert on Real Madrid – and that she is therefore entitled to make these kinds of statements (I’m still sore about ‘everyone thinks Cristiano is selfish’). I just find it totally wierd that she doesn’t appear to have any awareness of the kind of shit storm that will inevitably occur when she says stuff like this?

    • jellyace January 28, 2013 at 11:38 pm #

Yup, she stuck a big ‘ol foot in her mouth and again the foot was smelly and wearing spiked boots.

Has she not learned that information gained from her personal relationship with Iker should not be divulged in her work as the press? Or is she just like any other reporter from the Spanish mosquito press, out for blood and no ethics?

  7. Dreamlover225 January 28, 2013 at 11:14 pm #

She’s a journalist. It’s her job to report openly and honestly about the happenings in Spanish sports whether the news is controversial or not. It’s not her job to flatter or protect Real Madrid. The truth is the truth regardless of whether it hurts the team.

Her relationship with Iker and her career choice are a huge conflict of interest. It’s like a political journalist that covers the White House dating the president of the United States.

Plus, let’s all be honest here…did you guys really think that everything was okay in the dressing room? Hell, I knew something had to be going on for us to perform as poor as we did earlier in the season.

With that said, I wish she would have kept her mouth shut. It does cause me to question her allegiance to her boyfriend, but I can’t fault get for doing her job.

    • Dreamlover225 January 28, 2013 at 11:15 pm #

      *her

    • headbandsandheartbreak January 28, 2013 at 11:22 pm #

No, I sure didn’t – I’m not naive. However, I have to be honest, I’ve never thought much of her as a journalist – I see her more as a presenter. How much of her own stuff is she writing? Because some times, when she’s had to go off the cuff, she’s made some pretty major gaffes that call into question her expertise.

  8. Ira January 28, 2013 at 11:27 pm #

When I read the title of this post, I thought that yet another one of our players got injured so I guess it could have been worse. That being said, what the hell, Sara?! She has the freedom to say what she thinks but she should have thought of how this could affect her boyfriend [since Iker has to put up with enough shit already].
If Mou does leave, it could be because of various reasons. I don’t like it when people just blame the players (especially the captains) for everything. The amount of drama, bad luck, and injuries the squad, the coach, and fans have to put up with this season is ridiculous. My usual concerns [such as winning titles, injuries, and Sergio getting red cards] now seem trivial compared to the stuff that’s going on this season.

  10. M January 28, 2013 at 11:45 pm #

Part of me wants to throttle her and the other half scream at her. The term conflict of interest does not even begin to cover this mess.

You are supposed to cover for and protect the people you love, not get them into deeper shit. Iker does not need this right now. The team does not need this right now. Hell I’m sure Sara knew exactly what she was doing when she shot her mouth off but wtf lady?!!

I understand her commitment to her job. She is a professional in a cut throat world after all. BUT COME ON!!!

Aaaaghhh and this just before El Clásico too. I think I will settle for throttling her in my head and screaming at her for coming off like a mercenary who is out to get attention in any way she can.

  11. Charliechaz January 28, 2013 at 11:59 pm #

I co-sign you entire post. In fact you should have Sara’s job and her boyfriend,……do you speak spanish? Because then we wouldn’t have these problems.

I have so much homework to do and I keep getting distracted by this issue! THANKS SARA! totally joking anything would distract me from this assignment right now

  14. Irish Ange January 29, 2013 at 3:19 am #

So much for not criticizing Sara…she’s a journalist first and Casillas’ gf second. She has had the same job at Telecino since before she met Casillas, so her journalistic pedigree is not at question. What she has done is blown open the whole can of hypocrisy that surrounds all of football. After Mourinho shoved his finger in Vilanova’s eye, the AGM of Socio Members demanded something be done about his behaviour. Everyone with the slightest bit of common sense can see he is a divider. Only Abramovich had the balls to kick his psycho ass out. Maybe Perez will grow a pair too, perhaps he can borrow Sara Carbonero’s, hers are bigger than his.

    • tasha January 29, 2013 at 1:08 pm #

why can’t you bring anything to the table besides Mou poking Tito in the eye ? i really wanna know what else makes him a “psycho”

      • headbandsandheartbreak January 29, 2013 at 1:54 pm #

God, don’t ask that. She’ll probably tell you in endless detail. 😉 Don’t feed the trolls.

  15. Kel January 29, 2013 at 3:58 am #

This whole situation is crazy. She should have just said ‘no comment’. She wasn’t doing her job as a journalist here, she was being interviewed as a celebrity (right?) and had no obligation to say anything let alone something that would cause more trouble for everyone, herself included because once again this doesn’t make her seem all that professional.

    • Irish Ange January 29, 2013 at 6:03 am #

She was being interviewed as a journalist. As a journalist it is her right to report, whether the truth irritates people or not. Besides, she didn’t say anything that we don’t know already.

      • Jenny January 29, 2013 at 10:12 am #

        THANK YOU

She wasn’t “breaking news”. She wasn’t the source for anything. She was stating something that is widely assumed – and with good reason.

  16. Tambourine January 29, 2013 at 5:10 am #

I don’t know, I think it’s to early to bring out the pitchforks. You can see her full segment here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a9PSPRqdVA and she’s clearly reporting on Marca’s story and Perez response, not adding anything of her own to that. I know Sid Lowe is not the best loved reporter around here, but according to his twitter, MD changed what she was saying when they wrote up the story. There’s still a clear conflict of interest anytime she reports on anything involving Iker, but I think this has blown up not so much because of what she said, but because of the current mood – everything gets blown up and put on the frontpage these days.

    • Fai January 29, 2013 at 10:25 am #

I watched this too, and in the first part she is definitely reporting on the Marca controversy, but in the final part it seems to me like she is adding her personal opinion – ‘we all know that the atmosphere in the dressing room isn’t good,’ etc.

From any other journalist, this wouldn’t have merited a mention, while in her case there’s a clear conflict of interests. I don’t think Sara Carbonero should be ‘punished’ professionally for her personal relationship with Iker, but maybe she should consider taking a step back when commenting on ‘the situation in the dressing room’ when she must know full well that her words will carry more weight in that specific situation, because of her personal relationship, than any other journalist’s.

I definitely don’t want to bring out any pitchforks, and I’m horrified by all the ad hom hate I’ve seen today all over the internet, but I also think what she said was unprofessional, and the timing couldn’t have been worse.

      • Tambourine January 29, 2013 at 10:49 am #

Yeah, I think she should have stayed away from the ‘public secret’ etc. It may be right and it does not in any way prove that she (or Iker!) is the ‘mole’, but it’s a tinderbox right now, so she needs to step carefully. But I do think there’s a lot of overreacting going on and some of that was spurred on by MD’s write-up that took most things out of context. So in short – I agree.

  17. MissLadya January 29, 2013 at 5:46 am #

I guess the only “up side” to it is that Iker being injured means he won’t be taking to the field for at least six weeks, so maybe he can lie low until the furor dies down, though it will not make for a comfortable recovery. Great, yet more fuel to add to the Iker-hating fire 😦

  18. drea January 29, 2013 at 6:26 am #

Wasn’t there an unofficial gag order issued on her after she said that stuff about Cristiano?

This is why I’ve always felt a bit odd about her relationship with Iker (as much as I, generally, like her). Whether she said it straight out or if she was just talking about what was being said about it, anything that comes out of her mouth when it comes to these things can be twisted around and used against the team, and Iker.

Maybe I’m just really old-fashioned this way but I believe that if you want to be a real reporter who is taken seriously, don’t date your subject. If it’s something that can’t be helped, get yourself transferred to another area of the news. I remember by grandfather transferring a reporter from his regular city hall beat because he had started dating a politician. He said that even if the reporter managed to remain objective, no one would ever see it that way and his reports would always be tainted by speculation. But well, journalism ethics just aren’t what they used to be, not when you have Sara’s media outlet being the first to capitalize on her relationship with Iker.

Fine then. More fuel for the fire. Some ingrates will never be happy until they burn the whole house down.

  19. shiggers January 29, 2013 at 8:18 am #

Ughity. I think that about covers it.

  20. Manie January 29, 2013 at 8:34 am #

I understand she wants to be taken seriously, but leaking pillow talk to the whole world is not quite the way to go about it, you know?

I dunno, IMO I doubt she would have said this without Iker’s approval because it likely is something he told her in confidence.

    Just a mess

    • Manie January 29, 2013 at 8:37 am #

Although, like almost everything in the Spanish sports/ Madrid press…it’s not really anything new, except that now marca’s story is given the Iker Casillas stamp of approval.

    • Tambourine January 29, 2013 at 9:28 am #

How is she reporting pillow talk? In a weekly review, she reported that Marca had dropped a bomb with it’s frontpage, that Perez surprisingly had given a press conference in response and that the discord in the RM dressing room is considered a public secret. I think it’s absolutely fair discuss whether she should report on anything that involves Iker, if nothing else, then because there is so much room for misunderstanding, but none of what she said required inside knowledge from Iker, she could read it on the frontpage, just like the rest of us.

      • Anonymous January 29, 2013 at 6:21 pm #

Yea. I perhaps phrased it wrong. I mean that by bringing up marca’s comments, as Iker’s girlfriend she, rightly or wrongly, is seen as giving validity to their report. I’m sure they have discussed this and while the info is not new, the idea that it may not be as wrong as Florentino Perez says is new. And concerning.

The worst part is that like I think Una madridista pointed out, they weren’t asking her as a journalist; they asked her bc of her relationship. Which sucks in every sense.

        • Tambourine January 30, 2013 at 2:37 am #

I’m not sure I agree – she was on the show as a journalist as she has been in the past. Two of the questions might have been asked because she’s Iker’s girlfriend, but on the other hand, it was without a doubt the two biggest football stories in Spain in the last week. They would’ve asked the same of any journalist they had on, the reply would prob. be pretty much the same but wouldn’t have carried the same weight as when it came from Sara.

  21. mrscronn January 29, 2013 at 9:13 am #

I think that the least Casillas can do is to release a statement making it clear that her comments are in no way connected to him and that he fully supports the club and coach. He is captain and he needs to behave in such a manor.

    • MissLadya January 29, 2013 at 10:07 am #

But he already officially voiced his support for his manager and club, along with Sergio, last week. I think that’s what irks me the most about this latest bomb. Sara’s words directly contradict and/or dismiss Iker’s. He insisted there was respect and unity among the team and now she’s come out and said that that’s not true and that the locker room’s divided. Yes, you can argue she was simply repeating the general gossip, and, yes, that joint statement from him and Sergio was the usual PR damage control choice of words, but this really hurts both their image.

  22. CinematiqueChic January 29, 2013 at 10:10 am #

Ah, just what we needed the day before el clasico. Drama.

Shaking my head at this entire mess. I get that she’s a journalist and has a job to do, but when you consider the conflict of interest here, it would have been wiser to keep quiet. Especially since there’s no point in continuing the discussion of whether or not there is a divide. The papers say what they think will sell papers, and the club will try to look strong and united. Whether or not Iker is really behind Mou or they’re at each other’s throats behind closed doors – it almost doesn’t matter anymore. Iker doesn’t have much choice in the public face he puts out, and Sara just made him look like a liar.

Can I just have a slideshow of all the beauty that is Sergio Ramos please? PLEASE? I just want a lovely distraction from all this craziness…..that would do it for me….Holy freakin’ hell, what is going on in Madrid? Is there something in the water that’s making everyone nutty?

    • CinematiqueChic January 29, 2013 at 10:52 am #

LOL! That has got to be the best response anyone has had to this whole mess. I’m ashamed I didn’t think of it myself! Bring on The Ramos! Honestly if I wasn’t at work I would totally make a slide show for you. It would do us all good.

I don’t know how long I’d last however….damn, it got awfully hot in this office…..okay, it’s official…I need a slideshow of Sergio’s abs, arms, badonk, and smile…..the magic of anatomy.

but back on topic (damn), does anyone else think the communication decibels in the Carbonaro/Casillas household is going to be ear piercing? and NOT for the FUN reason….

                • CinematiqueChic January 29, 2013 at 12:50 pm #

I might have done better in biology if they’d used Sergio as a model. Maybe I’d even be the sports medic that today I dream of being.

I HOPE she told him what she was going to say before she went on the air. Otherwise that is really disrespectful of their relationship. Also, I’m seeing wildly different translations. Some make it seem like she said “we all know there is division in the dressing room” and some make it seem like she said “popular opinion is that there’s division in the dressing room.” IMO those are very different statements, one directly contradicting Iker’s statement to the press, and the other one just pointing out an obvious fact. My Spanish isn’t good enough to decide for myself, but I think it gets at something really important, which is that this is way more about perception than about what she did or did not say.

                  • Dr Heidi January 29, 2013 at 1:02 pm #

You are right, both have distinctly different connotations…..either way, she should have graciously declined commenting, as the press will distort anything that smells of controversy…

  25. Meli January 29, 2013 at 2:38 pm #

What she has done is very very stupid and selfish. She has ruined Ikers hard work as captan, his reputation, but most importantly the trust people had in him.
However, it amazes me that many people are so rude and calling her very nasty names.

Has it ever occurred to any of us that this might be Ikers work?? He might have instructed her to say the things she did! If that is the case, than I believe that Sara is of the hook and that our dear capi might consider his position at Real Madrid.

Whatever the case, i’m sad to see him being so passive and silent. And it is sad to see how quicky people have turned against him and even encouraged him to leave the club :(.

    • MissLadya January 29, 2013 at 2:49 pm #

I really can’t imagine Iker setting Sara up to take the fall for him. Knowingly putting her in the line of fire to cover his own ass??

Yeah, I don’t know. I guess I’m just trying to figure out the reason behind this whole madness. It is just hard for me to understand that she would throw the man she loves under the bus like she did.
A child would have been able to predict that all the blame and hate would be directed at Iker. That people would consider him as traitor and “the Snitch”. Not like it hasn’t happened before.

I think that anything he could possibly say right now would make everything a bazillion times worse. He’s damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t. People are being vicious to both of them.

True that. I guess that is the price he has to pay, having a relationship to a journalist.

No matter what the reason is behind her decision to speak about the matter, she/they should have known what the outcome would be. And she should have known that she was asked for an opinion, not because she is a journalist, but because she is his girlfriend. And that her answer would get him in big trouble.

She also said “They have already found a substitute (for Iker, Diego), out with the old, in with the new!! WTF?? It is like she is trying to mess things up and make people go crazy!!

I don’t know. I just feel that we need some response from him.

I’m confused and frustrated I guess hahaha.. Ohh holly shit. This is making me depressed : (.

The big problem is that Sara tries too hard to be seen and respected as a serious journalist and not as a footballer girlfriend. But the only thing she achieves, with this silly behavior, is damaging his image and reputation.

As a journalist myself, I always saw Sara as a little opportunistic. You know, there are other sports in Spain she could cover such as tennis, basketball or cycling. None of them would give her much prestige as Real Madrid, but she could do her work in peace. And then she could be known as a serious journalist, and not as the silly girlfriend that talks too much.
