Another Ticket Clusterfuckorama

So for those peeps planning to see Manchester City/Chelsea or Spain/Ireland at Yankees Stadium, there’s still no news as to when individual match tickets go on sale. As it stands now, you must buy a ticket bundle, which means you have to attend both games. But now they’ve added a new wrinkle to make it even more annoying.

Last year, our potential saving grace was to band together to purchase group tickets. That ended up being a mess because they put the individual tickets on sale before the group tickets and it was all two weeks before the match. Completely incompetent, IMHO. Anyhow, this year in addition to the bundle fuckery, if you want to bring a group to either match, it has to be bundled with a Yankees home game ticket! So basically, there is no way you can go to see one of these matches (at this time), without purchasing tickets to two sporting events. Sigh.  And I’m guessing that your group would have to all attend the same Yankees home game. Coordinating people is a nightmare at the best of times, but a whole group (minimum 10)? This is such shit. Here’s the ticketing page. If you’d like to write the Yankees and tell them what you think about their ticketing practices for footy (I sure did), here’s the contact us form. I don’t appreciate being held hostage when I want to see one frigging game. It’s ridiculous. I’m just praying that they won’t host the New York International Champions Cup match because they’ll probably pull this crap all over again if they do. They’d still probably sell out all the matches – and more quickly – if they didn’t put all these restrictions in place. Meanwhile, most of us aren’t buying tickets because we’re waiting until they’re unbundled and the tickets are being scalped on Stub Hub for Spain vs. Ireland for prices ranging from $87 for something in the gods to $1500 for up close seats. SUCH BULLSHIT. It didn’t work last year, Yankees Stadium, why are you doing this again?!

Ugh.

i’m really, really, really excited about the ICC and planning a trip with some watishista friends to go see whatever matches we can. my happy sports balloon will be severely deflated if this kind of bullsh goes down.

I feel for you. At least you could go as opposed to be no where near a match! Too bad you don’t know any players so maybe they could set you up with tickets…

Don’t want to pay those ridiculous prices. For that I might as well just buy a bundled ticket and give the Man City/Chelsea one away.

I just looked at the prices… that is highway robbery! That is awful. I bet you can go to the Bernabeu (sp ?) cheaper.

Maybe you should find someone who wants to watch the Man City/Chelsea match and split the bundled tickets?

Come on Living Social and Groupon! Save us from the Yankees!

I just don’t get it. It’s not like the Yankees have a hard time getting people to go to their games, do they? Such silliness.

Have I mentioned I’m not a Yankees fan? Here’s a good example of why… And I’m not even trying to go to these matches!

I feel for you ladies! I’ll hopefully be catching Madrid in DC or LA. I would prefer LA for selfish reasons but I can’t abandon J, so I’ll probably be making my way to DC

My friends and I just went with StubHub. Impatience. It was more than I wanted to spend but it wasn’t too insane and the seats are good. I really hope tickets for the ICC are easier to figure out though.

Um, I’m a bit confused. I’m familiar with foreign teams travelling to the US to play against American teams, but two foreign teams playing against each other … in the US? Are they just exhibition matches, or is they part of some new initiative tournament?

And I really don’t get wtf is going on with the ticket sales. I know the Yankees is baseball, so why is it being grouped with football tickets?

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 22, 2013 at 5:31 pm #

Most of these are friendly matches. However, there’s a new tournament called International Champions Cup (it’s linked in the post) which will have substantial prize money.

As for your second question, the matches are taking place at Yankees Stadium so I guess they want to take the opportunity to sell some tickets while they’re at it. Very annoying, esp. for people coming from out of town for the match. They’re probably not going to want to travel back to NYC if they come from far away for a baseball game.

      • MissLadya April 22, 2013 at 6:10 pm #

But what if you don’t like baseball, or Yankees isn’t your team? They’re forcing people to also buy tickets to a game they might not want to attend? Wow. That’s low.

I wonder how they decide on friendlies. Do countries just at random give a shout out to one another like,
        “Hey, you busy?”
        “Not really.”
        “Wanna play a match?”
        “You’re on!”
If so, then why on earth would Ireland agree to play against Spain? Not that surprise upsets are unheard of in football but … Yeah, I fear they’re gonna get another pounding, this time in front of American fans. Gotta admire their pluck, as always. Will go on record to say I do believe they have THE best supporters in the world. I couldn’t have been the only one who teared up a little when they started singing Fields of Athenry during their Euro 2014 defeat to Spain ❤

Spain’s playing to “warm up” for the Confederations Cup. They got Ireland because an Irish team in NYC will sell.

            *head-slap*
So, guess who completely and utterly forgot the CC will be played this year … ? Had to stare at your comment for several seconds before I could place it. Man, this summer’s gonna chock-a-block full of football! Me likey 🙂

They just announced on Chelsea’s site that individual tickets for their game will go on sale tomorrow.

Thanks for the reminder – I got a note about this the other day from watishista P (she’s a Yankees season ticket holder and they were able to start buying yesterday) but I didn’t get a chance to put it up then.
