Fred & Ginger Make A Recommendation, Historic Remontadas, Iker For Adidas & Double Datin’

25 Apr

Ah, Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers! When I was a woobins-sized Lozil and had major disappointments, my mom would always sing this song to me. So here it is, boys. I love you! Hala Madrid and let’s kick some arse next week!

Remontadas are obviously on everyone’s mind right now. After the game yesterday, I went home, curled up in the fetal position and snarfed tons of baby carrots with edamame hummus. I figure with the amount of emotional eating I’ll be doing between now and the next leg, I’d best make it healthy or risk getting accidentally harpooned. Sigh.

But we need to get inspired. We don’t have the luxury of laying around in angst puddles. We’ve got to get our shit together, cheer on our boys and support them 100%. In turn, they need to show up and play their little hearts out. As Mou said, they have to be ready to give everything and die out there on the pitch and “If we get knocked-out by Borussia on Tuesday then so be it, but they will have had to suffer and Real Madrid’s players will end the match with nothing left to give”. And that’s all we can ask of them – to give their all. Mou’s not going down without a fight and the team (along with the fans) shouldn’t either.

Signs of support and encouragement are everywhere (even amidst the whining, bitching, finger pointing, doom & gloom, etc.) Saw this on Twitter today (via @LuisoLeonGarcia)

BItScKSCIAAI2dWIt’s happened before, it could happen again. I do love a good precedent!  The mothership also got in the mood compiling a great video of all those comebacks.

Looks like they will also be doing a series on historic comebacks that we’ve made. Here’s the first part:

Historical comebacks (I): Real Madrid 5-1 Derby County

The Whites knocked the English team out in the last-16 of the European Cup in 1975/76 thanks to goals in the second leg by Roberto Martínez (2), Santillana (2) and Pirri.

Real Madrid’s first big historical comeback was against Derby County in the last-16 of the 1975/76 European Cup. Madrid won the return leg in the Bernabéu 5-1, ensuring they would progress, something which looked highly unlikely after they had lost the first leg 4-1.

Derby County-Real Madrid. Last-16 of the European Cup (1975/1976)
In the first leg, played on 22 October 1975 at Derby’s Baseball Ground, the performance of the home team’s forwards George, with three goals, and Nish, with another, made it hard for Madrid to progress as they went into the second leg 4-1 behind. Pirri scored the Madrid goal which kept their hopes alive for the match in the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real_Madrid_-_Derby_County (1)Team sheets:
4- Derby County: Boulton, Todd, Thomas, Mc Farland, Nish, Newton, Rioch, Gemmill, Hector (Bourne, 79′), Lee y George (Davies, 79′).

2-0 (min. 15): George.
2-1 (min. 25): Pirri.
3-1 (min. 43): Nish.
4-1 (min. 76): George.

The return leg took place on 5 November of the same year. Real Madrid managed the impossible in the Santiago Bernabéu, beating the English team 5-1 in extra time. A spectacular come-back to reach the quarter finals of the European Cup. At half time Madrid were just in front after a second-minute goal by Roberto Martínez. In an incredible start to the second half, Madrid scored two more goals. Roberto Martínez, again, in the 50th minute and Santillana in the 54th made it 3-0. However, George made it 3-1 six minutes later (60’), forcing the home team to score at least one goal to level the contest. With five minutes left, Pirri scored Real Madrid’s fourth, putting the match into extra time. In extra time, Santillana put Madrid through in the 100’.

Real_Madrid_-_Derby_CountyTeam sheets:
5- Real Madrid: Miguel Ángel, Sol, Camacho, Benito, Pirri, Del Bosque, Netzer, Breitner, Amancio (Rubiñán, 95′), Santillana, Roberto Martínez.

1- Derby County: Boulton, Thomas, Nish, Mc Farland, Powell, Todd, Gemmill, Héctor (Bourne, 78′) (Hinton, 102′), Newton, Davies, George.

4-1 (min. 85): Pirri.
5-1 (min. 100): Santillana.

Can’t wait to see more of this series – it’s a great way to learn more about the history of the team and our never-say-die spirit.

Iker showed off his new Adidas gloves and boots today. He spoke candidly about the match, his relationship with Mou & the upcoming derby this weekend.

Casillas: “We can’t wait for Tuesday”
by Javier García

“The 11 players who take to the field will give their heart and soul to try to get through the tie”, said the Whites’ captain at the unveiling of his new Adidas gloves and boots

Iker Casillas was the star attraction at a ceremony at the Futbolfactory Adidas Store at the Parquesur shopping centre in Leganes. The Real Madrid captain, who unveiled his new gloves and boots, spoke with the media and is confident that the team can turn around the Champions League tie against Borussia Dortmund: “It is not a good feeling, it is painful to lose a semi-final first leg 4-1. But after the match, people start to pick themselves up, to believe and realise that there is still the second leg ahead of us. We have five days to appeal to Real Madrid fans, to come to the Bernabeu to support as they have done at other times for us to get through to the next round. We can remember great historical moments in which all seemed lost and in the end we made the comeback. As captain and player for this squad I ask that the people who go to the Bernabeu give their heart and soul. The 11 who take to the field will do that to try to get through the tie. We believe that it can be done”.

Casillas (3) Casillas (1) Casillas (2)Casillas praised Borussia Dortmund for their great match, but is confident that the comeback is achievable: “We came into the match in good form, but Borussia played very well and were worthy winners, maybe with a slightly flattering scoreline, but there are still 90 minutes of the second leg to go, anything can happen and we will die out on the field if we need to because after those 90 minutes could be a Wembley final. We know that the comeback is possible, we have a chance. We have played in three consecutive semi-finals and we’re playing at home. After the poor performance in Germany the fans will be even more motivated. What we have to do is ask for support. Fans will be upset right now, but in two days they will forget about it and have to think about Tuesday’s match being the biggest of the season”.

Casillas (6) Casillas (4) Casillas (5)Convinced about his team’s chances, he sent a message to the fans: “We have another chance on Tuesday, we are disappointed and hurt by the result, I understand that Real Madrid fans are disgusted by yesterday and didn’t eat well last night or have woken up today feeling annoyed. Also, those who travelled to Germany to support and the team were not in harmony. I know my teammates, we have shared the 10 months of this season and we can’t wait for Tuesday to show the fans that there can be bad days, like yesterday, but there can also be good days”. Casillas was asked about what he is going through on an individual level at the moment: “I’m fine, training brilliantly, as I have done many times, helping the team however I can. It is different to what I have been used to for the last 14 years but I am involved with the team, the important thing is the team. Diego Lopez has the full respect of his teammates and Real Madrid supporters and is doing very well. I am doing the same as before, I train a bit more, I push myself and get involved and give advice to the squad and I have to wait for the opportunity, that’s what football is about”.

Casillas (9) Casillas (7) Casillas (8)When asked about his future should Mourinho continue at the club, he said: “It’s clear that right now, I want is to exclusively think about Tuesday’s match. I am training as I have done for months. In football there is a third party who decides who plays. But more important than my future and what I am bothered about is Real Madrid. Names do not matter, but the fans, the club, Real Madrid and Tuesday’s match”. Casillas says the club is more important than any one individual: “Above Iker is the club, which is the most important thing. I do not know if fans’ have the opinion that they want Iker to play or not. I’ve been dedicated to Real Madrid for 22 years. This club has taught me personal values and I am very lucky to have grown up here. The important thing is that Real Madrid always win. On Saturday we have a derby and Tuesday is the biggest match”.

Casillas (10) Casillas (11)Casillas (14)(Aiiieeeeee! Check out the wee woobins with Iker’s glove! How cute is he?! The glove is almost as big is he is!  Cristiano is a hair influence too, I see.)

Casillas spoke about his relationship with the Portuguese coach: “It’s not cold, it’s honest. He speaks the truth, we have a great deal of respect for each other, and we talk about football. On a personal level we do not have the same relationship, there is no need to over think it. One thing is the professional relationship that we have and on a personal level it is very different, there is no need to over think it. The most important thing is the club”. About whether the team lacked a sufficient response in the Borussia match, he said: “We do have answers, that’s why we have reached where we have; the Champions League semi-finals and the Cup final. You have to look at what the opposition’s strengths are. We played against a team that presses well, who want to achieve something and that play a different form of football to us”. And as to whether they have no plan B, he said: “That’s what the coach is there for, to do what is best for the team at any time. The coach is the one who can do things with the team and the one who makes the plans”.

Casillas Casillas (12) Casillas (13)The captain also referred to Ramos’ statement after the match: “I agree with Sergio. He has a character and an attitude of always giving his all. Sometimes it is true that we lack that attitude. We knew what had happened the day before in the other semi-final and that it could happen to us. But I am convinced that my teammates have that attitude and will show it and do well. If there is something that this team and this club does not get tired of doing it is achieving great feats and I am convinced that it can happen on Tuesday”. He also ruled out that the defeat in Germany was due to over-excitement: “I did not see that in us. The day of a semi-final you can think that you have the ticket to the final. But we have a bad habit of thinking about an all-Spanish final, and last year we had the bad experience of not making it to the final. This year we hope to achieve that feat. Borussia will create danger for us, but we have a very capable and skilled squad that can turn the tie around, even if it will not be easy”.

The one who decides is someone else, not me. I’m happy because when I got the all clear, my hand was great, which was the important thing. Now I have to wait for my chance and when it comes, make use of it. If I have the opportunity I will make the most of it because after three months without playing I have the keenness of a child. I do not give up, I try to put pressure on, keep moving ahead and helping. It is also good for Diego himself, putting on pressure so that nobody in the team can relax. All I have are very good words for Diego because he has really helped us to get where we are”.

tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o5_1280 tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o4_1280 tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o6_1280On a possible division of opinion between fans and the words of support from Vicente del Bosque, he said: “I thank Del Bosque for his words, after the distressing situation of my injury three months ago. Every time I hear his words it picks me up even more. It is not easy for him, but it helps me to push myself further. People can think what they like, I grew up here. I’ve been here 22 years and if someone does not remember my career, they can have a look on the internet. I’ve always been committed and loyal to this club”.

tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o9_1280 tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o7_1280 tumblr_mltnhws0141r1ylj5o8_1280Before Tuesday’s match, Real Madrid play the derby at the Vicente Calderon. “That is how the calendar has worked out, we have to also think about the derby, it is 14 years since we lost. They are going to want to beat us and cut our points advantage. A trial run of the Cup final? Maybe, but I do not think it will show much. What is certain is that in our heads are more on Tuesday’s match”, said Casillas. Finally, he reiterated his optimistic message regarding the Champions League second leg:” We are one step from the final and we have to make every effort to get there. We recognise that reaching a semi-final is very difficult. Every year that passes by is a year that hurts because it is a lost opportunity. We have to be aware that we have to fight in the Bernabeu to reach the final until the end, until we are almost out of breath”.

Watishista Michelle sent me a link to these photos of Cris & Irina double dating with Mesut & Mandy Capristo last night.  I couldn’t deal with all the post-game related screeching as it was so I didn’t bother posting it then, but Michelle brought up a good point: “with the loss today might as well take all the bad news at one time……….” Fair enough. The reason I haven’t posted about Mesut and Mandy before (it’s been a topic of conversation for a couple of months) is there was only one frigging set of pictures with them walking next each other which had everyone in hysterics. In this picture, they at least look like a real couple. I’ve found the reactions to him dating that I’ve seen kinda weird and borderline disturbing.  If you read Tumblr, Twitter, LJ, etc. there’s a bazillion fangirls shrieking, hating on Mandy and threatening to cliff themselves.  That’s not on. However, there’s another segment that has been planning the wedding and picking out baby names since there was the barest whisper that they might be a couple, stalking their twitters/instagrams, and reading romance into every single post no matter how innocuous. I find this equally weird.  There seems to be no middle ground. Don’t know about y’all but when I was Mesut’s age, I changed partners with startling regularity. The last thing I was interested in was marriage & babies. I was young and I wanted to have fun, preferably with someone awesome.  Looks like that’s what Mesut is doing and more power to him.  I say we let them have a good time without putting too much emphasis on the outcome. Not everyone wants to settle down and lest we forget, we don’t really know these people. We just have impressions of them, which may or may not be erroneous.  As for the Mandy haters, we don’t tolerate the nasty comments about girlfriends, so that’s not gonna fly either, but people have always been pretty respectful here (thankfully). So, in a (rather large) nutshell,  that’s why I always feel a bit uncomfortable posting about Mesut’s love life. For some reason, people seem as hardcore about it as the Sergio stans are (which, damn, that’s impressive). With that caveat in place, here’s pix of the happy couples after having a meal with friends at a Lebanese restaurant.

crismesut mandyThey all look super cute, right? The only things that I find worthy of major discussion is Cris’ terrible hat and the fact that Mesut is wearing a Cyndi Lauper t-shirt. Interesting. (Also? Irina has pretty, pretty hair).

On that note, it’s time for me to get back to work. Here’s to our boys, may they recover from yesterday’s disappointment and prosper.

She’s a German pop singer and yes, she’s very cute.

I think Irina doesn’t enjoy the paparazzi. She rarely looks happy in these photos and, quite frankly, I wouldn’t either

Anyone posting ignorant, offensive, xenophobic (“well I never heard about her in ‘Murrica!”) crap about lovely, talented, beautiful Mandy will be hearing from me.

      I don’t think it was a double-date either.

I think they were out on the same night.

Still – when the romantic and bromantic collide it is a beautiful IDEA :p

Just going by what the captions on the pictures said – that they all joined friends for dinner at a Lebanese restaurant. Other than that, I don’t know. It’s a nice thought though, isn’t it?

      • GinaM April 25, 2013 at 10:20 pm #

Definitely! I’d love to see them double date! Mesut looks happy and Mandy seems like a nice girl too 🙂

  4. Jenny April 25, 2013 at 6:59 pm #

Incidentally Lolzil, you are incorrect. It was not “two pictures of them walking next to each other”.

Mesut’s interviews with Bild gave the Mandy-game away long before this picture surfaced. It was speculation for about 2 solid minutes until Bild got him to open his mouth – which made it very clear.

It wasn’t even, really, reading between the lines. That they were briefly linked in 2010 is what made it amusing.

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 25, 2013 at 7:31 pm #

“Lolzil?” Intentional or typo? 😉 Sigh. See, this is why I don’t like posting shit about his love life. I neither have the time nor inclination to zapruder old articles searching for clues to his relationship status. I’m talking about the pictures in Madrid from months ago (which you well know). That was the first time MOST people had seen them together or knew of her. That’s when all the online drama started. I’m obviously not talking about this picture, which I thought I made pretty clear in my post. I just can’t give this any more energy, because quite frankly, it’s ridiculous. People get over invested in this sort of shit. I’m happy for him, but other than that, I’m not going to base my life around what he does (off the pitch).

      • Jenny April 25, 2013 at 7:47 pm #

I’m sorry. I overreacted to a perceived insult to my community.

        And yes – a typo 🙂

        • headbandsandheartbreak April 25, 2013 at 7:55 pm #

You know me, Jenny. I’m actually a member of your community, FFS. But this is the sort of jumping on that makes me never want to post another fucking word about him off pitch. For reals. Makes it seriously unfun to blog. I don’t see a light hearted mention of him going out to dinner with a girl as a reason to be chided like I’m in some sort a remedial Ozil class. Sucks the joy out of life, IMHO. Can’t we just enjoy the nice picture without drama?

          • Jenny April 25, 2013 at 8:03 pm #

I said: I reacted to a perceived insult to my community – very rudely, I admit. My reaction was passive-aggressive, and that is unforgivable.

            Nevertheless, I apologize.

I really REALLY want to comment on all of this. I really do. And I can’t. I keep typing out comments and then deleting. VERY few people know exactly what I think about the players at this club. And VERY few people know exactly what I think about the women that they keep in their company. There are ones I like and then there are ones I don’t get a good vibe from. But you know what? That is none of my damn business.

At 24 I was running around having fun with my friends. And a few guys struck my fancy. They were fun and they were like me. Turns out there was big drama. I can’t IMAGINE if I had lived that drama out in front of millions of people worldwide! For them to either hate the man (and other women) involved in that drama or to be planning my wedding and naming our babies! Apply these things to your lives, people! Yeah some people settle down at a young age, but the majority do not. And NONE of us have had to do this while millions of people who don’t know us scrutinize our every move. “Read between the lines” Are you fucking kidding me?! Sometimes… Just sometimes, things are black and white. I personally have better things to do with my time than to pick apart everything that is said by these guys. Whether it’s about the club or their personal lives.

Moving on… The only thing I don’t like about that picture of Irina and Cris is his hat. Not a fan of her sheer shirt either but hey… I’m not exactly fashion forward haha

    REMONTADA!!!

I have a perfect video I’ll have to send you Lozil. About how the underdog doesn’t always know he’s the underdog. It’s really good. I love it. Haters back off. Cuz if you don’t love this team in the bad, then don’t bother loving them in the good.

As my lovely Spartan says (and, you know, Will Smith) “We ride together. We die together.”

Yeah… So, I apologize for going off like that. I, like a lot of us, am insanely stressed out in RL and just kind of blew up. I stand by what I’ve said, but I hope no one takes offense to it. I am not personally attacking anyone

      • Jenny April 25, 2013 at 9:02 pm #

Since we’re having a serious discussion: those who get over-enthusiastic about pairings are generally in a perverse reactionary state over the bitching misogyny we see online from the effing self-haters and misogynists and fucking “confession” blogs.

        Take yours truly, for example.

The amount of woman-hatred (self-hatred) shown online by girls in general (WAG-hatred is just another type of misogyny) makes me want to vomit.

I’m glad I don’t have a daughter. I wouldn’t want to bring her up in this foul, disgusting world.

Coaching girls soccer has made me extremely aware of how I present myself and how I react to other women. I want these girls to grow up strong with respect for each other and other women. I refuse to teach them anything else.

I am extremely aware of what I am presenting as a representative of my club. I still remember my first club and ODP coach. We’re a bigger influence on these kids than we think. I’d like to think that they’ll remember me when they’re my age

          • em April 27, 2013 at 1:53 pm #

Thanks for being a coach, and thanks for being one who demands respect. There isn’t enough of that out there in certain organizations. There are too many negative stories from youth tackle football and baseball out there. It’s just not being taught out there. But soccer does it a little different. Respect is one of the reasons that players from Madrid and Barca can unite to contend in the Euro and the WC.
My 13 yr old daughter is the captain of her footy team. When she comes off the field, especially after she scores in a match, I always ask her if she is proud of herself and if she did her best. She’s usually quite honest. We try to make sure she assumes accountability for her game, whether she plays well or not, and that she realizes that she is the example for the rest of the team. She will occasionally get a little emotional out there (we can see it ‘blooming’ in her face), and the coach will sit her down, but she will get right back out there and get it done, just like Jerome Kern/Fred & Ginger have asked us all to do… And she’s fierce when she’s out there, but when she’s off the field, she’s a princess with a thing for shoes and lip gloss. Like flipping a switch. Neat kid, really… I could learn a thing or two from her.

        • headbandsandheartbreak April 25, 2013 at 9:43 pm #

Really? If I were into having a kid, I’d be happy to have a daughter (or a son) because that way I could teach them to be self-respecting and to stand up for other women. Nothing changes if you don’t make it happen. You can call it a foul, disgusting world and in many ways it is, but you need carve out little pieces of sanity. When Maisougio and I were in other communities, we were dismayed by the misogyny, so when we started our own blog, we decided that we wanted to have place where that was unacceptable. So, we made our space and others who felt the same way joined us. There’s a lot of young women who come here and they see an example of a space where the typical crap in the fandom doesn’t usually happen. We have people from all team affiliations, genders, orientations, races and religions that hang here. We’re proud of that. We set out to create that environment. Hopefully, people will take a bit of that with them out into the interwebz with them.

So this blog is our little shot across the bow of the ship of bullshit that we see out there. However, I don’t feel I need to overcompensate by adoring every woman who dates a footballer. But if I don’t have something nice to say, I just don’t say it. There’s some I like and others I don’t particularly care for (in truth, none of it is all that important to me), but slagging them off in public accomplishes nothing.

I prefer some moderation in my sentiments.

          • Jenny April 25, 2013 at 10:10 pm #

            Nah.

I used to say you had time for 2 things in life.

You could have a nervous breakdown and finish law school.
Or have a child and finish law school.
Or have a child and have a nervous breakdown.

Life (or the biological clock) doesn’t have time for all 3.

I’ve done the first option – and time is, quite frankly, gone.

            • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:13 pm #

Well, I just never wanted to get married and have kids. Personal choice. But I know women who have had kids, completed school (law school, PhDs, etc.) and that gave them nervous breakdowns, but hey, they did technically have all three, so it’s possible. 😉

              • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 3:00 pm #

Timing! It was all timing Lozil!

              • your-the-ozi-to-my-khedira April 26, 2013 at 3:09 pm #

                I also completed option 1 , but thats probably because 1. i don’t want a child . Ever 2. i don’t believe in having kids out of marriage . Personal choice .

                • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 3:13 pm #

I like that we live in a time where we have that choice, don’t you?

                • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 3:16 pm #

Actually, I should clarify this. I can’t say that I never thought about getting married or having kids, because I have at various points, but it was never a priority for me. Still isn’t. I’m sure you get the people who question you about it “Didn’t you ever want to have kids, get married, etc.” And I always answer “If it was a priority for me, I would have made it happen no matter what. Obviously, it wasn’t.” 😉

                  • mygypsyspirit April 26, 2013 at 4:49 pm #

I’m stealing this! Because it is so hard for me to explain why I don’t have a husband and children. I usually get the same thing my grandmother asked me… “You do like boys, right?” Yes, but…
                    1) So what if I liked girls?
                    2) Why is that the automatic reaction to not wanting to get married and have children? There are plenty of absolutely amazing gay/lesbian couples that are amazing parents. Most of them are better parents than some heterosexual couples are. UGH it’s so frustrating!

                  • Katie Ann April 26, 2013 at 9:06 pm #

Stealing, too, because I come from a VERY traditional “marry and have kids” family (one on side, anyways), and the fact that it’s not been my priority (I may be older than Mesut, but I just want to have fun for a while, too) is tough at times. There’s still a lot of pressure- or, at the least- expectation- to conform to that.

                    • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 9:13 pm #

Yeah, I hear that too. Both my siblings married young and had kids. And so naturally, everyone assumes you’ll do the same. When intrusive extended relatives ask me if I have any kids, I just wink and say “None that I know about. Heh heh.” You can gauge the intelligence level of the questioner by how long it takes them to figure that one out. 😉 I’m of the theory that things turn out the way they’re meant to. I’m not even vaguely displeased with my life. I adore children but apparently this isn’t my path. Maybe next life I’ll be a mom. Anyone who knows me in real life can tell you I have a tendency to adopt everyone around me anyhow. 🙂 Maybe that’s why I never felt the need to have kids of my own! 😉

                    • your- the -ozi- to-my- khedira April 27, 2013 at 3:11 am #

My mom has never put pressure on me and my sister to have kids , but I know she wants grandkids …. I’ve always wanted 2 get married , but I feel the norm in marriage is to have kids(being a mom isn’t something I want) , so because of that I feel like maybe the whole marriage kids thing isn’t for me . I’m glad I came to that conclusion because I haven’t looked back since .

Yeah I saw that too. I’m glad to see real fans that can get around a loss especially after the poor greeting they received upon returning to Madrid.

  11. Dr. Heidi April 25, 2013 at 10:22 pm #

At least there weren’t any pics of Sergio and Pilar :-)…..sorry, didn’t mean to make light of what I know are raw emotions after the debacle with Dortmund (I know you will all hate me, but I’m really okay today)…..and the Mesut with gf pics…..we all feel protective of our boys, and when they feel disappointed, we feel it too…I get it. If Sergio walks down the aisle with Pilar (or anyone for that matter) I will be inconsolable for days, but then realitywill rudely slap me in the face like a wet towel as I realize how ludicrous my crush really is. It’s fun to fantasize, and it’s a habit most of us have had since we were 10. I kind of like it….makes me feel young again! So ladies, let’s enjoy our collective passions, comiserate when we must, and just revel in the opportunity to act like total morons with our fantasy men…..*I feel all fuzzy inside*

    • mygypsyspirit April 26, 2013 at 12:54 am #

It’s not the matter of mentioning it or having the feeling of not liking someone. Lord knows I’m not a fan of certain WAGs and I adore others, though it does have more to do with how they strike me as people. But I think it’s the fact that sometimes people get carried away.

Big reveal… I’ll put myself out there as an example (Shigs stop reading).

I love Kaka. As a player I fell in love with him when he moved to Milan. I think he plays beautifully and effortlessly. And his looks? He has everything I’m a sucker for. Chiseled jaw and cheekbones, beautiful lips and eyes… He takes my breath away. I also happen to not like Caroline (I’m gonna hear it for this). She could be perfectly lovely but something about her rubs me the wrong way. I don’t know what it is. I just don’t perceive her as sweet as the majority of fans do.

BUT I pay minimal attention to their relationship as its just not my business. And for all I know, the way I perceive both Kaka and Caroline could be totally off. I believe that Kaka is lovely, nice, gracious, and a little… Less intelligent.

I guess my point is that I really just don’t see the point in freaking out over his relationship one way or the other. Being devastated or elated over these things… I don’t really understand

      • mygypsyspirit April 26, 2013 at 1:00 am #

And, by the way, I do fangirl and fantasize with the best of them. As you say, it makes me feel young again

        • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 1:33 am #

That is appropriate. Caroline is not a public figure. Hardly worth thinking about. As it happens and as an aside I agree with you; I don’t believe in happy Catholic families (I was in one – and we were miserable).

But then it’s hardly worth worrying about in any major way, of course. Those who happen to like WAGs are hardly the problem.

It’s those who find reasons to dislike women that are the problem.

In general, women are lovable. You need very few excuses to like any woman. That could be my essential bisexuality speaking, or my essential feminism. But I happen to find women very lovable. Nor do I have fixed “reasons” for liking women. I like them all, in general. I don’t like them for “standing by their man” or “having careers” or “being fashionable” – in that half-assed way some girls “like” women – which is really an implicit criticism of women who don’t measure up – I genuinely like women. I like looking at them. I think women are lovely.

In general though, I worry about the persistent woman-hatred and self-hatred (because when women express it, that is what it is) and misogyny and rape-culture that I find myself stuck in. That thing where otherwise lovable girls behave in ways that don’t allow them to love themselves.

          • mygypsyspirit April 26, 2013 at 1:52 am #

Caroline is a public figure. Both in her attempted singing career and by default. And even if she were a public figure in the same way that Mandy, Irina, Sara, Pilar, or Lena are my opinion wouldn’t change. And it’s not even that I believe they are unhappy. They’re a normal family with normal problems. Every one of these players and coaches have carefully sculpted professional faces. Some of them would surprise most fans and some would devastate them.

A male friend of mine, who I adore and don’t see enough of, told me one day that women hate each other. It was a long process trying to explain to him why and where it starts and how to change it. English is his second language (possibly third because I don’t remember if he learned English or Italian first) though he speaks it excellently. He still doesn’t quite get it. Sometimes I’m not sure I do either…

  12. jellyace April 26, 2013 at 2:03 am #

The best part about failure is resilience — the picking ourselves up and resetting our goals and moving forward. But there are also lessons to be learned from failure. So I hope in the next few days the team and the fans can figure out the lessons move forward and beat the heck out of Dortmund!

  13. Kel April 26, 2013 at 4:02 am #

I’m surprised tbh at you mentioning the extreme reactions to Mesut’s new gf. Doesn’t this happen with every WAG. No, wait, every celebrity gf? Fans either dislike her for being with the guy they like or (and I know it’s a wacky concept) but sometimes they don’t like them just cause they don’t appeal to them or they’re crazy about them to prove they are ok with the guy they like dating someone. It’s crazy either way.

    • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:54 pm #

It kinda does, but as you can see in the comments I make below, I feel that for some reason he seems to provoke some sort of extra-special uproar. It’s exhausting.

  14. your- the -ozi- to-my- khedira April 26, 2013 at 10:24 am #

Mou’s so uplifting … I can feel it ; we are going to come back , I aint giving up till that final whistle is blown , nothings set in stone .

Some people are serious stalkers “naming kids” , and all is super WEIRD , I love Mesut as much as the next person , but Mesut & Mandy’s relationship , is exactly that Mesut and Mandy’s relationship , I will never get fangirls … I have never and will probably never get what Torres sees in Olalla , but he probably couldn’t give 2 flying fucks about what I our the entire world feel about him and his wife’s relationship , so neither do I end of .

    • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 11:24 am #

      An excellent point.

Basically though (and this is not a response to your comment but a more general point): let’s not pretend this is a new or unique phenomenon with Mandy or Mesut, actually (or that he is in some way in need of special protection because his Welpenschutz – in his case mainly a physical phenomenon – is so strong; he’s a powerful millionaire and can look after himself with the best of them). This has been going on for as long as famous men (and the subject of this blog is famous men) have been going out with girls – famous or not. Consider the simpering so many blogs indulge in over Nagore, as an example. Una is a perfect example of a blog that indulges occasionally. Or, historically, the Chinese historical narrative: beautiful concubine seduces powerful emperor. Dissipation proceeds apace. Dynasty ends.

On the subject of Nagore: those posts are silly as hell, but I love those posts. I won’t deny it. I like looking at beautiful women.

This conversation starts to bore, doesn’t it? Au revoir, everyone.

      • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:15 pm #

Um, I never said that it was a new or unique phenomenon. It’s just that I personally don’t enjoy writing about his personal life anymore because it turns into…this. And quite frankly, it’s exhausting. Something about him seems to bring out the I-don-t-even-know-what-to-call-it-anymore. ::shaking head::

        • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 12:17 pm #

oh no – I’m no longer commenting on the post.

This is now “general comment on women and the shit we put up with” – there’s no scope to discuss this ANYWHERE.

Because if we do,we’re just angry bitches.Or “feminist revision” historians.

Or just “feminists” – which appears to be a bad word.

          • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:22 pm #

Feminist isn’t a dirty word in my book and it always depresses me to see in polls that many younger women don’t consider themselves feminists. Breaks my fucking heart.

            • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 12:25 pm #

IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WORD.

  15. la-la April 26, 2013 at 11:36 am #

Ooh can I join in on the wag thing? Ive got a couple of theories (pls humour me!)
Firstly I read somewhere that the truly obsessive Beatle esque fangirling is likely a form of OCD; the fan girl fixates on the person in question to the point that they feel like this person is the only one that can basically make everything better in life, so at the point where the delusion is exposed, usually when they get a gf, its actually felt as a form of betrayal and then transposed on the gf who has ‘stolen’ the guy and will obviously not make him as ‘happy’ as the delusional fan girl; witness justin bieber fans to see this in action. So just relax girls, it’s just mental illness! That was sarcasm btw. Mental health issues are never funny, neither is taking yours out on other people. The other thing is that Mesut seems to be percieved as something akin to a neutered cat to most fangirls, I think its his inherent inoffensiveness that makes him attractive to these ladies. The fact that he actually ‘does it’ is probably another blow to girls who would prefer the playstation and orange juice version… ok that’s my 2p worth anyway!

    • Dr. Heidi April 26, 2013 at 11:45 am #

neutered cat….classic! I may never look at Mesut quite the same way again!

    • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 11:51 am #

No that’s all true. They infantilize disgracefully. Like he’s a dumb child.

He is not exactly bright – in fact he’s downright simple-minded – but that’s mainly his “slight autism” as his teachers put it – his focus on football to the exclusion of all else -which is quite obvious if you follow him “in German”.

It’s too contemptible the way he is regarded as just “cute” and sexless. “Waitresses” in Vegas anyone?

But that’s another part of the FUCKING DOUBLE-STANDARD women put up with. Sexual faults in men are not focused on. They are ignored. He can go to Vegas and people will pretend those waitresses are really waitresses. Or ignore that his previous relationship was with the wife of a teammate (strictly speaking: adultery – which I don’t actually give two fucks about – it’s not my fucking life – but if you’re going to be the type of person who indulges in the double standards I am about to discuss then you should care – just to be consistent).

Ah but then we wouldn’t have a double-standard, would we?

On to that: one fascinating facet of the tumblr-cesspit discussions the ickle misogynists are having is that they are obsessed with the idea that Mandy may have once had a boyfriend (yeah, so?) and the PRECISE date she split up. I mean: who gives a fuck? – she’s 22 – at 22 I never kept a boyfriend for more than 2 months – which is typical of my highly-over-educated, wealthy “class” of person, as it happens – we also don’t get married, we shack up. I’ve been shacked up for 9 years. Marriage is outdated and stale for my class of person – early middle-age, left wing, professional, well-educated, etc…

But suddenly she’s an evil person while he’s some neutered angel to those twits.

DISGUSTING double-standard. ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING. And they wonder where the rape culture comes from? Or the endless slut-shaming women put up with. Or the wage-gap. Or anything at all we have to grin and bear.

I lied. This conversation doesn’t bore me at all. A lifetime’s resentment is suddenly bubbling to the surface, apparently.

Keep talking girls. I could go on all day.

      • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 11:54 am #

Incidentally: my rage is quite well placed and perfectly understandable.

In addition to being a woman, and being EXTREMELY tired of it I am also Canadian, and if you have been following the Canadian news the source of MY ABSOLUTE RAGE AND DISGUST should be quite obvious. Recently I just have to open the fucking paper.

For Canadians: read Christie Blatchford for a laugh this morning in the National Post – or maybe just ignore her the way I should have and have a better day.

      • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:20 pm #

Yeah, I have to agree – I’m pretty appalled by some of the stuff that I see on Tumblr. I have to wonder if these people are extremely young or what. I do think this has been going on since the first hot caveman more than likely. Still mystifying.

        • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 12:27 pm #

What kills me is that this ties in with what you said above about not wanting to be called feminists.

These are young girls who express feelings about themselves.

What happens when the 13 year old is 22 and changes boyfriends (which is normal, and natural and the way it should be with healthy young people who are not seriously attached to someone).

What will she feel? Will she have the space to grow up and love herself?

        • Dr. Heidi April 26, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

What happened to our happy place? Did we just go a little bat shit?

          • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 12:56 pm #

Not really. We’re just discussing feminism and why young girls on line seem to cultivate a culture of misogyny. It’s a bummer.

            • Dr. Heidi April 26, 2013 at 1:37 pm #

Many a wise man has told me that to get ahead in anything, we need to use what god gave us……i.e. our feminine wiles. I must admit that I have preferred to work for men rather than women, because women don’t mentor, they compete – absolutely true. however, it becomes more of us validating our worth in our seemingly ‘male dominated’ world (thus letting men influence our behavior) than us being strong enough and secure in our own talents. I was also told that for a woman to succeed, she shouldn’t try to act like a man, because ‘we bastards have been competing with each other since the caveman, and we’re much better at it’ yes, direct quote! Let’s not be so aggressive, as in trying to push an agenda, but be so incredibly talented and competent, that nothing more needs to be shown. This strategy absolutely works! *happy thoughts*

              • headbandsandheartbreak April 26, 2013 at 1:45 pm #

I’m bummed that you had that experience. I’ve had a number of wonderful woman mentors, as well as male ones. Sure, I have had some women try to pull the competitive crap with me but it’s usually pretty easy to spot that sort of insecurity. I don’t play that way. I adjust my approach and usually we find common ground. I’ve worked in some extremely male dominated industries as well, but still have been more than able to hold my own. I’m rather aggressive by nature (you don’t say!) so it’s not like I’m gonna tone it down but I have a reputation for being a no bullshit straight shooter that gets the job done and done well. I didn’t get that with my feminine wiles, just plain old hard work. And I’m always ready to step up and mentor young women & men. Always. I consider it an obligation to all the people who were kind to me when I was coming up.

                • Dr. Heidi April 26, 2013 at 2:35 pm #

I agree, but by aggressive, I don’t mean feminazi…..those women turn me off completely. I’m aggressive through competence and confidence, but sweeter and more charming when I need to turn it up a bit. lethal combination, and most women possess it, if they just let themselves. Mentoring by observing is the most effective tool we have. Worst thing you can do is preach behavior and act in a way incongruous to it. Did it get heavy in here today because of the Dortmand debacle? *whew, i need a drink!* Lozil, too bad you’re not down here…..we would have one hell of a happy hour!

Boy do I hate the term ‘feminazi’

Sometimes it fits, unfortunately though that may be.

It’s thrown around too easily. I’ve been called a feminazi for standing up for my rights and most recently, objecting to rape jokes. It’s just another term that degrades our position.

                  • Dr. Heidi April 26, 2013 at 2:38 pm #

the most important aspect to always maintain is your integrity. don’t lie, don’t misrepresent the truth, and don’t throw people under the bus. Sometimes, they do deserve it, but that usually reveals itself anyway. Quoting Don Henley ‘shit don’t float’ :-).

                  • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 3:03 pm #

                    I will only say this:

I have an icon at LJ that reads: Feminazi: because wanting women to be treated equally is just like invading Poland 😉

It’s food for thought. However strident women are in the search for rights, we do not maim, rape, kill, invade – there are no bodies in ditches because of feminismm – or mass-genocide, if we want to take the comparison to its logical conclusion.

Lots of good is based in feminism. Almost nothing bad has ever resulted from it.

We all need a place to cry. Reading attacks on women on tumblr is a personal experience for me -it’s like reading a personal attack.

On that note: Meet you at the drool for happy…drooling.

      • la-la April 26, 2013 at 12:30 pm #

Marina Hyde put it quite well when she said that certain women (probably the ones you refer to on tumblr) are basically quislings. They espouse a culture of women hating just a pernicious as any classic misogynist. I prefer not to engage. I was a teenage Riot Grrl and I’m confident that there will always be a cohort of women who love, value, respect and challenge other women and young girls. To me this blog is evidence of that … xx

        • Jenny April 26, 2013 at 12:37 pm #

I was brought up by Vatican II nuns.

They loved us a lot – they showered attention and affection on us like we were their children – and they gave us political consciences and told us we were lovable and wonderful. They were your standard subversive nuns – and that was “early” third wave feminism before it had a name, really.

Lucky you, I had “penguins” who were decidedly pre-Vatican II types. I learned to love and respect myself and fight off guilt about myself as a sexual being no matter what they tried to ruler-beat into me. Believe me, it was a fucking process getting there.

No nun I EVER had wore a habit!

One wore (decidedly) mini-skirts. Definitely above the knee – just about. Chaplain: Sister Marilyn.

They were AWESOME. It was a very privileged school and they (and the other teachers at my middle-school) were there because they believed in the school’s mission. It was all girls and very “future leaders – strong women – FEMINISTS (we were openly taught: BE FEMINIST – especially by our literature professor) – strength – belief etc…

We were pressured to stay in math and phsyics even I did it to Grade 12 though I didn’t need it.

I can’t pretend that’s typical, even of most girls’ schools, but it came together for us.

              I am blessed.

Even the priest who came in was such an old darling.

In highschool it was non-denominational, but again: all girls. And it wasn’t much different.

Incidentally: I LOVE Marina Hyde – her occasional football posts make me laugh until I cry.

Thank you, la la. xx I have met some amazing women over the years who helped me to learn to respect myself. They always went against the grain. It’s easy to join in with what everyone else is doing. It takes some chutzpah to step up and said “Nah, that shit’s not happening on my watch.” I learned that from them.As a result, I feel a responsibility to model that behavior so that’s why we’re so strict here about the misogyny, homophobia, etc. We can be silly, we can have fun, etc. but when it comes down to it, you have to make a decision on what you stand for and a choice about who you surround yourself with.

I used to lurk on kickette and whilst some of the comments were quite funny (in particular I recall a brief, perfectly worded response from a reader about precisly why they wouldn’t ‘do’ Phillipe Mexes), most of them were appalling. You’ re right that it takes a concious, deliberate effort to be a decent person and kudos to you and Maisougio for creating a happy, funny, entertaining space here whilst still encouraging all to engage in a positive and constructive way. Here, as its Friday night have some cocktail vouchers on me! *

*you’ll have to use your imagination here…

Not much to say about Nemo and Mandy other than I think she looks like a nice girl and I hope he is happy wether it lasts long or short.

But omg Iker! He is just perfect! The way he speaks about the return leg makes me really believe we can do this. HALA MADRID!
