Memorial Day Bits & Bobs

27 May

943153_461596330598741_1161387953_nHope everyone in the US enjoyed their Memorial Day! I know I did. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a fantastic view of the NY harbor from watishista DK’s roof deck. I’m sleepy from the heat and ready to get some sleep but first a few things…

First and most importantly, Robbie Rogers was subbed in for the last 13 minutes of the LA Galaxy’s 4-0 win over Seattle Sounders. In that moment, he became the first openly gay male to play in a major American professional sport. He was greeted with a standing ovation. I am so incredibly pleased for him. There’s a fan support page for him on Facebook if you want to go and send a little note of encouragement.

Vincente del Bosque called up 26 players for La Roja’s June friendlies and the C0nfederations Cup. 3 players will be cut prior to the tournament in Brazil.

Here’s the list:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, Víctor Valdés

Defenders: Raúl Albiol, Álvaro Arbeloa, César Azpilicueta, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Piqué, Jordi Alba, Nacho Monreal

Midfielders: Xavi Hernández, Javi Martínez, Xabi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Santi Cazorla, Andrés Iniesta, Jesús Navas, Juan Mata, Cesc Fàbregas, David Silva, Javi García, Beñat Etxebarria

Forwards: Fernando Torres, Pedro Rodríguez, David Villa, Roberto Soldado

Ooooh! You know what this means! SUMMER OF SERNANDO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and The Double As, Silva/Villa, Fabrique, etc.)

Spain travels to the US on June 4th and will make Barry University (aka The Land of Dr. Heidi) their base. They play Haiti in Miami on June 8th and Ireland in NYC on June 11th.

If you want to see the other RM players that have been called up for their national teams and the match schedule, here’s a list.

Have you guys ever seen that tumbler Confess WAGS? You can submits confessions or comments on WAGS. I saw this one and laughed out loud. It’s appropriate for today’s call ups.

tumblr_inline_mk6ryqTV1g1qz4rgp::snort:: Perfection! Sese attended an event for Girard-Perregaux watches and made some comments to AS about the Mou situation and potential replacements. (Translation and pictures via MGEF) Here’s some video.

tumblr_mngkxvTPla1qddnsso1_500from AS –

“We respect everyone’s decisions. Each person chooses their future and what they want to do. I only have positive words for him. On a professional level, he’s one of the best coaches in the world and during this period [playing under Mourinho] he has helped me to compete and be more demanding. He gets the maximum out of every player and that’s one of his virtues.”

Pressure as a reason for Mourinho’s exit: “If he has one thing, it’s experience. I don’t think he’s leaving because of the pressure.”

Confidence in Mou: “We’ve had confidence in him from the beginning to the end. That isn’t a reason for his departure.”

tumblr_mngr23qzgU1qftb6ko1_500Was it time for Mourinho to leave? “That’s not for me to say. Our job isn’t to make that type of decisions.”

Qualities that the next Real Madrid coach needs: “On a collective level, we need a coach who has confidence in the squad, who has ambition and is eager to win silverware and who commands respect in the dressing room. It’s difficult, because the squad is full of players from many countries and different cultures.”

Jupp Heynckes and Carlo Ancelotti, potential replacements in the Madrid dugout: “They’re two great coaches. In football everyone knows each other and we have team-mates who talk in very positive terms about both coaches, on a professional and personal level. The president will decide who the right man to lead the team is. We have a very good relationship with him but he hasn’t asked us who would be a better choice; that’s a decision that he has to make.”

tumblr_mngtagCQvu1qbiysso1_500Also from MGEF is some translations from a radio interview that FloPeezy gave tonight. Lots and lots of information here…

Some talking points from Pérez’s radio interview:

  • Zidane will resume his sporting director role
  • Carvajal should be coming back
  • no one has asked about or offered anything for Higuaín
  • he really, really loves Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Rafael Nadal sends him texts before big games
  • he’s unsure of Kaká’s future; it’s between Zidane and the next coach to decide
  • the players actually have good things to say about Mou
  • benching Casillas for Adán was a motivation tool
  • it’s not the club’s role to intervene in the Casillas situation; it’s the right of the coach
  • if he runs unopposed, the topic of coach will resume next week
  • he doesn’t know if Coentrão is leaving but made a point to say anyone who wants to will have to pay a buyout
  • he loves Xabi, too and hopes he stays on another season
  • he likes Isco but we’re stacked at that position
  • same with Cazorla
  • don’t believe the media; we paid 8m for Mou’s Inter buyout, not the 16-18m going around
  • it’s not true that he didn’t get on with Míchel or Raúl
  • he thinks Zidane doesn’t believe Jesé will leave
  • once we get the new coach, Cristiano’s renewal will be discussed

The Peez also confirmed that Mou and the team agreed to part ways in January. So many of the rumors were true.

MGEF also had some quotes from Albiol on Mou from Marca.

tumblr_mnh339UJDx1qbiysso1_500from Marca –

“I’ll take away his mentality and his work ethic with me. I have no problem with him, but I would have changed some things.”

“Mourinho hasn’t said goodbye to us. I imagine he will this weekend. The last few months have been difficult. I’m taking away the positive side of these three years with the gaffer. It’s disappointing not to have won anything,” he added.

Albiol & his wife Alicia participated in a charity event called ‘Walking for Alba’ today. Alicia posted a picture of them with little Alba.

8aeb1912c6c711e28ed122000a9f1311_7Cesar Azpilicueta posed for DT and looked absolutely gorgeous. Here are the pictures from their photo gallery. Con La Roja translated the interview.

Los Blancos fan Daniel Casta had one hell of an amazing experience. He managed to meet almost the entire team! Here are some pictures that he posted on Twitter. He even got a picture with Marcelo’s brother in law, Caio! Please take special notice of Albiolita wearing matching t-shirts. Hilarious.

What a lucky guy! That’s amazing! On that note, I have to get myself to bed, I’m completely and utterly exhausted. Max hasn’t been sleeping much since his surgery and if he’s up, I’m up. Hopefully we’ll both get a little shut eye tonight.

I am cracking up, Fernando is the best WAG!

  2. Mehreh May 27, 2013 at 11:33 pm #

I’d love to hear what Albiol has to say about mou but I’m shallow and easily distracted by how handsome he is.

    • Allison May 28, 2013 at 9:29 am #

Doesn’t he look incredible with that haircut? *swoon*

Oh god Senanrando, Junando! Will it end in tears? Will Nando dump Sergio and run off with Juan? Or will Sernando take Juan under their wing and become SerJuaNando? So many questions (it’s Tuesday afternoon cocktail hour at work btw…laughing alone in my office while I type this and try and drink my sangria at the same time).
On a more serious note I hope Javi M and Torres make it to the final 23. They have been brilliant the last month for their teams!

Cesar is gorgeous! I only flipped past the interview but this caught my eye “Recently, I’ve been listening to Justin Timberlake because Juan Mata likes him a lot.” lol. Will be interesting to see him under Mou, he’s great but has the potential to be world-class.

Transfer season does my head in. So much speculation. I do hope they get Isco but I think City are in front.

Also, may not be the right place to ask but am I the only one who thinks Neymar should have come to Madrid? Much more suited to his style of play! Anyway…

      • Mehreh May 28, 2013 at 1:00 am #

The meanest part of me wants to see neymar at barca get pwned by RM’s defense, especially the baby giraffe. Just a simple dream I have.

The nicer part of me wants neymar to find more success than pato did in Italy. I don’t like to see any baller fail. It makes the competition less interesting.

      • Casey May 28, 2013 at 1:03 am #

I would’ve liked Neymar to come to Madrid =D Ronaldo and his partnership would have been very nice to watch .

Apparently Bale could be coming , so YEAH to that . Personally I think he is way better than Neymar , so if he does come , his partnership with Ronnie will be a mile better IMHO !

        • Mehreh May 28, 2013 at 1:34 am #

Bale + Ronnie = best smiling goal scorers ever.

        • Backwards May 28, 2013 at 1:34 am #

Bale just said in an interview that he wants to stay in England but I don’t put too much weight in anything that comes out of their mouth before the transfer season starts!

    • Mehreh May 28, 2013 at 12:58 am #

The idea of Juan and Cesar having JT listening parties is my new favorite. Those two. Granero is sitting in his flat listening to leadbelly and weeping for their lack of hipness.

    • headbandsandheartbreak May 28, 2013 at 11:30 am #

Oh, there will be lots of Tormata & Sertormata action. There always is. But I definitely prefer my Sernando. 🙂

      • jellyace May 29, 2013 at 1:03 pm #

Don’t forget Sergio’s shadow, Jesus Navas, skulking around while all this bromancing goes on!

    • Backwards May 28, 2013 at 9:21 pm #

      Senanrando? More like Sernando! Typo…

  4. kel May 28, 2013 at 8:29 am #

I bet Soldado gets cut from the team. VDB does not seem to care for him

    • SR 4 May 28, 2013 at 12:52 pm #

One striker will probably get cut.I think it´s pretty likely that it´s going to be Nando. Ughh it sucks being a pessimist.

Regarding the WAGS, I could not believe someone would say anyone is not good looking. One thing is sure, these guys get the super models and you wouldn’t catch them with someone “real.”

    • headbandsandheartbreak May 28, 2013 at 10:52 am #

Lots of our players have “real” partners. Sure, Cris is dating a supermodel. But many of the team are dating normal girls. They’re all pretty (I personally think) but the bulk of them are not models. Many of these guys have been with their partners since before they were famous and/or grew up together. I remember you mentioning that Marcelo was with a “model” before. He and Clarice grew up together and have been a couple since they were 13-14 years old. She’s an actress now, but she certainly wasn’t then. Arbeloa and Carlota have been together since they were 17 – they were both soccer players. Marta is a student. Vanja is Luka’s manager. Pepe’s gf Ana Sofia is a med student as is Morata’s gf Carla (who just graduated). Fabio’s wife Andreia is a speech pathologist. For everyone like Sergio, Iker, Sami or Cris who are dating high profile famous women, there’s many more who are dating “regular” women. So it’s unfair to say that all our guys are with supermodels.

    • CinematiqueChic May 28, 2013 at 11:05 am #

I disagree. Patricia Gonzalez, Olalla Dominguez, Anna Ortiz, Clarisse Alvez, Carla Garcia (even though they’re not together anymore she and Cesc were together a very long time) – those aren’t supermodels or Miss Whatevers. A lot of them were childhood sweethearts. They’re all very pretty women, but not every footballer is with an Irina or a Sylvie van der Vaart.

  6. consuela May 28, 2013 at 9:42 am #

Oh and follow Iker on Twitter. He is hilarious!

    • headbandsandheartbreak May 28, 2013 at 10:44 am #

Iker doesn’t have a Twitter account. Not sure who you are following, but it’s not him.

    • Mehreh May 28, 2013 at 11:48 am #

i don’t think he tweets. he definitely instagrams and that is all babies, all the time.

  7. Rose May 28, 2013 at 2:11 pm #

Paging Dr. Heidi! Just wondering if you’ve seen any of he German NT around since they’re supposedly at Barry right now. How lucky are you! The Spanish and German teams at your doorstep in a span of a couple weeks! And what do we have to do in the NYC area to get a training camp to happen here? Several boys can bunk at my place, I really don’t mind.

And DAMN! Dave is looking really good!

    • la-la May 28, 2013 at 4:05 pm #

Bahahaha! ‘Dave’ cracks me up…I read an interview with him where he was all ‘yeh my surname is quite challenging but CESAR really isnt that hard…’
      Bless!

      • Rose May 28, 2013 at 9:27 pm #

I feel kind of bad persisting in calling him Dave, but it’s just so funny. I will try to call him Cesar or Azpi from now on, but I make no promises!

        • headbandsandheartbreak May 28, 2013 at 10:10 pm #

I call him Dave as well. It’s just too funny. 🙂

          • la-la May 29, 2013 at 4:49 pm #

Don’t feel bad, it’s a British thing, nicknames are a sign of love!

    • Dr. Heidi May 28, 2013 at 8:50 pm #

Anxiously awaiting the arrival of all that testosterone……My estrogen levels are peaking……and I am beyond happy that Torres has been called up too! Oh my GOD! Sernando together again, and I get to witness it first hand! *doing my happy dance*

      • Rose May 28, 2013 at 9:26 pm #

Have you seen the Germans around? They’re practicing there too, and while quite a lot of the usual crew aren’t there, I’m sure they’re still quite something to watch 😉

Whoever’s set all this up at Barry University has certainly done well! ENJOY ALL THE HOT MEN!

      • jellyace May 29, 2013 at 1:07 pm #

Dr. Heidi, I hope you prepared your stalking kit! You are so lucky to have all the hotties at your doorstep! We want a very detailed report, please!

        • Dr. Heidi May 29, 2013 at 1:36 pm #

The German national team has been here this past week, but of course, as luck would have it, I took vacation days, and just came back to work today. They are not practicing today (it’s monsoon weather down here), and their last practice is tomorrow, weather permitting – i don’t have a lot of hope, as the weather tomorrow looks as bad as today. and of course, I have a meeting to attend off campus. Son of a b%&*…..however, the Spanish NT will be here June 5, 6 and 9th but I don’t have times yet. (I swear, this information is like trying to access the FBI computer banks) Although all the practices are closed to the public, (yeah right; like that’s going to stop me), keep your fingers crossed that I’ll be able to pull off a miracle. Ramos within touching distance? Can I be stopped? Oh hell no!

          • headbandsandheartbreak May 29, 2013 at 3:18 pm #

The RFEF will release Spain’s schedule soon. More than likely on the 3rd or 4th and I’ll post it here.

  8. Natalie May 28, 2013 at 3:38 pm #

they knew in january mou is leaving? no wonder it all went so bad. 😦

  9. Gillian Rosh May 28, 2013 at 10:54 pm #

Sergio & Fernando: it is true love.

Ramos looking good in those pics!
