Champions League Draw Results

29 Aug

UEFA CLWell there you have it folks! Our opponents in the group stage will be Juventus, Galatasary and Copenhagen.  I’m delighted not to be in the Group of Death this year. What do you think of some of the other match ups? (Click to make the picture larger)

the only game i’m really afraid of is the away leg against galatasaray. everyone else, i think they can handle. optimism!

As an Arsenal fan, I kind of want to weep and then die. (But it could be worse, at least I’m not attached to Celtic.)

even though i’m not an arsenal fan, i feel for you. that’s a brutal group.

I was very sad for Arsenal as well. I was bummed that we didn’t get Celtic.

Not as terrible as last year but not a stroll in the park either. Though my money is still on us to finish top of the group.

I’m excited to see Llorente since I adore him but don’t follow Juve at all.

Total SHOCKER after the Deportivo-friendly: Kaka wants to leave.
I can’t blame him – won’t get any playing time this season either, now that Bale (probably) is coming, ADM and Jese staying plus Özil and Isco – the midfield is stacked! If he wants to play the World cup next year in his home country, he needs to find a new club.

Too bad it never worked out with him and RM – he’s such a great and wonderful person & player.

    Kaka – obrigada.

Poor Arsenal and Celtic. Tough groups!

Looking forward to the games against Juve!

As a United fan, im constantly nervous about this season. They will be tested. Sky were quick to call it an ‘easy group’. Shakhtar, in particular, are very dangerous and Sociedad are underated.

Group F looks to be the toughest…just my very humble and not totally educated opinion. 🙂

      • Laura Witrak August 29, 2013 at 5:35 pm #

Or rather I can’t immediately pick out one or two clear leaders.

Not going to lie, i’m totally excited about Juve because it means we get to see Marchisio!! (although I also think it could be tough against them)

    • drea August 31, 2013 at 2:31 pm #

Haha, for me it’s not just Marchisio. Matri may have gone back to Milan, but apart from il Principino, there’s also Bonucci, Ashton Kutcher’s doppelganger de Ceglie (at least that’s what everyone seems to be telling him), Llorente, Buffon, etc. High def was made for matches like Real Madrid vs Juve. 😀

Okay – here is a stupid question(s): How does this work? Is it like a true lottery as in it is truly random? Why are the very top teams not in the same group? I know it is more exciting to see them play at the advanced stages like this past winter but it seems rigged. As much as I would love to see RM win the championship, I always have a soft spot for underdogs. This group doesn’t worry me too much (except perhaps Juventus but then they need – NEED – to be playing top form always – a hard thing to do with all the away games) and that being said, it would be fun to see a lesser team advance

From what i remember there is a country coefficient and individual teams also have a coefficient. The number is calculated over the last 5 years. pot one has the strongest 8 teams in the draw (so highest coefficient) while pot four has the weakest. Then the 4 teams are picked by picking one from each pot. I think. I’m sure the interest can explain it better

We studied this in econometrics at uni (yes I’m a dork)

      • Backwards August 29, 2013 at 5:58 pm #

Oh and the draw is done again if they pick 2 teams from the same association.

        • Anonymous August 29, 2013 at 7:44 pm #

Ahhhhh. Thank you. That seems to be a solid way of making sure one group isn’t loaded with the top teams.

while I don’t feel like there’s a real group of death, I do feel bad for Celtic…. hopefully I’ll be able catch a Celtic game because the fans are great

arsenal in group F is the same as galatasaray in group B…awww

    • ayen August 30, 2013 at 3:48 am #

can’t wait for this silly season to end and for uefa games to start kicking off even though it means waking up so very early (usu. in between 2-3am) just to watch it live on tv

In 2005 I was a huge Copenhagen fan. The team was amazing and won everything in Denmark. All I wanted was to see Copenhagen play my favorite Spanish team, Real Madrid, in the Champions League.
I wish Copenhagen could go into the game with the team from the ’05-’06 season, because then they’d stand a chance. Perhaps Real could play with the team from last season!
I’m not a Copenhagen fan anymore, as all the players I liked and the coach left the club within a period 2 years after ’07, and my heart fell apart. It will never be the same again. That magical team is gone!
That being said, I think I’ll watch the game at the stadium and enjoy Real steam roll over Copenhagen and win with perhaps more than 3 goals.
