Quick Bits & Bobs: Deportivo, More Mesut & A Surprise Victory

29 Aug

Llegada_del_Real_Madrid (4)I’m way behind the gun on this one because the Teresa Herrera Cup match is already in the second half but I wanted to post the arrival pictures among other things.

20 players were called up for the match including Cris who originally was going to attend the Champions League Draw/Best Player In Europe award ceremony in Monaco today. I guess he reconsidered (more on that in a minute) and I think it’s actually a good thing for Deportivo. Cris is a big draw so I hope that got a few more booties into the seats and some extra press for them.

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Diego López and Tomás Mejías.
Defenders: Pepe, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Nacho, Carvajal, Casado and Mateos.
Midfielders: Kaká, José Rodríguez, Özil, Casemiro, Isco and Di María.
Strikers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Jesé and Morata.

The team was greeted by over 400 fans when they arrived in La Coruña.

Mesut tweeted (while he was on the bench – his minions should probably take note of that sort of timing when putting stuff up) a little video of his Adidas adventures yesterday. He got his own bus. You gotta love it.

Back to the Best Player in Europe award, I can pretty much understand why Cris might not want to go and have the world scrutinize his every expression in relation to Messi. But color me completely surprised as to the winner. I just assumed Messi would win AGAIN but I was wrong. Franck Ribery took the honors this year. Supposedly the votes played out like this Ribery (36), Messi (13)  and Cristiano (3).  Poor Cris can’t catch a break. Well, instead of sitting at an endless stuffy awards ceremony, at least he’s out doing what he loves and is best at: playing footy. He’s a winner in my eyes. Congrats to Franck.

Re: UEFO Player of the Year, didn’t Iniesta win it last year?

Anyway, good for Cris for playing in a match for charity instead of going to the awards.

And obvs that was supposed to UEFA – don’t type while trying to watch a match at the same time!

Oh yeah, he did. Totally forgot about that. Was thinking of the Ballon D’Or. And also assuming Messi wins everything. 😉

Nobody can blame you for automatically thinking Messi wins everything. I swear when I think back to high school I wonder if he was voted prom queen.

exactly! RE: cris. he can’t do anything right according to some media outlets. he skips the ceremony, it’s a snub to UEFA and their award. he goes to the ceremony, he hates his team and is arrogant and that’s why he hasn’t renewed. (i assume that’s what would have been said of him if he’d gone) much better that he does what he feels like doing – namely, playing his chosen sport that he loves.

*sigh* but i do love seeing that man in a tux.

Listening to this match was so confusing until we figured out there were 2 players named Kaka playing (*palm to forehead*).

I think the Deportivo team and fans were ecstatic RM came fully loaded and Ronaldo was the ‘bonus’ given the timing. Given his choices, thought he chose to show respect for the game of football by going rather then pander to the perceived drama of this awards ceremony.

Long time since I commented – but total SHOCKER after the Deportivo- friendly: Kaka wants to leave RM – said so after the match!
I understand him though, with Bale coming, Jese staying and we also have Isco and Özil – well, he won’t get much playing time here and he wants to play the World cup in his home country – so, who can blame him.

Well, you can’t blame him – with Bale coming, Jese and maybe ADM staying plus we still have Özil and Isco – the midfield is stacked. And he do want to play the World cup in his home country – so, who can blame him.

Total SHOCKER after the Deportive-friendly: Kaka said after the game he wants to leave RM. But who can blame him? With Bale coming, Jese and probably ADM staying plus Özil and Isco – the midfield is stacked, so he won’t get much playing time this season either. He wants to play the World cup next year in his home country – so I totally get that he wants to leave. Too bad it never worked out with him in RM – I was really hoping but fingers crossed that he’ll find a new club very soon!

    The best of luck
    @Kaka: Obrigada.

These kind of awards just make me feel a bit gutted for Cris 😦 I know it isn’t all about individual awards, but what more does he have to do? And I know other players deserve the recognition as well, because they’re brilliant too, but it is a bit frustrating!

Also, did anyone see the latest on Kaka 😦 ?

That he told Real Madrid to sell him by Sept. 2? Headed back to AC Milan maybe?

      • ayen August 30, 2013 at 8:54 am #

Much as love I Kaka in Real Madrid, he needs to have a constant playing time to be called up in Brazil’s nat’l team for next year’s World Cup

yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up back in Milan! And I agree, Kaka has always been a favourite of mine, but I don’t think it’s in his best interest to stay, especially with the WC next year, i’ll still be sad to see him go though 😦

I’m glad to see UEFA actually recognizes that there are other great players besides Messi and Ronaldo. Hopefully the Balon de Oro can do the same this year (Falcao maybe? I’d have to think a little more about it :). But seriously, Ribéry has been a consistently solid player and has gotten very little recognition for it in the grand scheme of things because he was overshadowed by Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney or whoever else. Maybe Robben still has a chance of getting some credit for what he does too 🙂

Mesut, I didn’t understand a word you said, but you sure are pretty. 🙂
