It’s Official: Mesut Ozil Is A Gunner

2 Sep

mesut-ozilMy boo done left the building. He confirmed it to Sky Sports Germany. I’m not thrilled, obviously – in fact, I’m absolutely gutted and I think this is a huge mistake – but some of the ridiculousness I’ve seen online is gagging me. I love Mesut, but I love Real Madrid too.  Sounds like Mesut seems pretty happy and confident in this deal, so I really hope people can chill on all the finger pointing. Arsenal is certainly over the moon. I like Arsenal, so I’m consoling myself over the fact that if he had to end up somewhere, at least it was there. I’m still planning on posting things about him here. However, I know there are a lot of people who are Mesut fans first and not so much Real Madrid fans so I’m anticipating a bit of an exodus. I do hope you’ll stop by and visit us occasionally! 🙂

My only hope is that he bromances with The Ox to heal my wounded heart. TEAM OXIL FTW! Love you, Mesut, thank you for three years of beautiful football and headband wearing mayhem. You’re still my favorite player no matter where you go (but please, not to Barca, okay?)

His statement on Facebook:

dear fans of real madrid,

thank you very much for three wonderful years with all of you. my time at real madrid was unique and special for me. sometimes things develop differently, than i would have expected them to a few days ago.
although I’m leaving real madrid I wish you and the team the very best for the future.

now I’m looking forward to my new club: THE GUNNERS!

– Lozil

Gutted! I am really going to miss Mesut. Even worse, as a Liverpool fan, the idea of him at Arsenal is terrifying. Wishing him all the best!

    • Cjl September 2, 2013 at 6:00 pm #

I’m a liverpool fan as well but I will enjoy seeing one of my faves in the bpl. Trying to stay positive!! 😞

I wonder how Sese is gonna deal with this…maybe I should book a flight to Spain so I can console him lol

  4. realmadridlookbook September 2, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

I don’t think he’s really happy about leaving based on the circumstances the club is sending him off on. But I guess the only thing for one to do now is look to the future with a positive outlook. -Thats just how I perceived all of this.

  5. Mehreh September 2, 2013 at 5:50 pm #

Arsenal is going to be better off with him.

Sigh. I feel like an overly sad teen.

    • Lici September 2, 2013 at 5:55 pm #

I agree, Arsenal have some class players but no trophies in ages, hopefully that will change with Özil in their ranks, I would be way more gutted if he joined Man Utd or Barca so I’m happy, it’s not like we’ll never see him play again.

I’m struggling a little as Mesut was kind of the reason I started following Madrid a year ago, so all this change is leaving me a bit unsettled. I may have a six month sabbatical from football…

      • Jorzil September 3, 2013 at 5:39 am #

Exactly the same here! I started following him during Euro 2012, and before I knew it I got sucked in Real Madrid and all its precious players. I failry certain I’ll keep following Madrid but now I will have to discover Arsenal as well since I am not that familiar with the club. However, I am really glad he has Podolski and Mertesacker there, I am sure they will have lots of fun!
(very hard supressing thoughts about Sami though …)

    • Lici September 2, 2013 at 5:59 pm #

Jack Wilshere: “Signing of the summer! Easily! Fantastic player, plays the ‘Arsenal way’. Welcome @MesutOzil1088 absolutely buzzing!”

      😦

And how can i go to sleep right now when i can’t think of anything else and i’m close to burst into tears… If Arsenal hurts him i’ll never forgive them!

  7. Ira September 2, 2013 at 5:56 pm #

This is too painful. I am telling myself that atleast he is not going to Manchester. He will have Poldi and Per. I didn’t even think of how this affects the bromances! omg Samisut and Serzil! noooo!

  8. randomthoughts57 September 2, 2013 at 5:56 pm #

I’m happy for him in the sense that the Arsenal players are very excited to play with him and not to mention Arsenal fans are over the moon about his signing. so I’m glad he’s going to a club where he’ll be appreciated.

and even though I had a day to prepare myself for this, it still hurts. I feel like the RM team I’m so used to will no longer look like that my beginning of next season at all.

  9. Nalicia September 2, 2013 at 5:57 pm #

Wenger for the win! Arsenal is a great club, regardless of what stats people want to harp on. He is big on developing young talent (fyi – he was looking at Isco this summer) and he is good at it. And while his principle of not wanting to buy players unless they were of “super quality” has perplexed people, look what that principle has brought the Gunners this year (in a quiet, understated, no histrionics fashion too).

Ozil is fantastic young player and the EPL will be a good learning curve for him in terms of player development. I’ll cheer him on no matter what as it’s his career, not mine. Tho, have to say, will miss the BeIn sports commentators and the endearing “little avatar eyes” comments during RM matches. Bet they are sniffing a bit today too.

Now, to get him in my EPL fantasy football team!

  12. Anna September 2, 2013 at 6:07 pm #

I don’t know if i feel worse for most of the RM fans or Sami! I’m still more upset about Pipa and Kaka leaving, but this was such a surprise, I really didn’t believe any rumours from earlier on in the summer and kind of feel like it came about quite recently. I don’t really understand why the club wanted to sell him, but can kind of understand why he left, even though it seems he would have chosen to stay with us if it had all worked out.

Good luck Mesut! Quite excited to see you speak English! A lot of my family are Gunner’s and are thrilled about the move, i think you’ll be loved at the Emirates!

    • Anna September 2, 2013 at 7:20 pm #

Also, just heard that apparently Coentrao is being loaned out too? Pretty gutted, I really like him, but it is just a loan and he did say he wanted to go…

  13. drea September 2, 2013 at 6:25 pm #

So there it is. Popping in here just to say: Good luck, Mesut! I know you’re going to do great at Arsenal. I love you, but I hope we never have to face you on the pitch. Enjoy London!

On a side note, apparently, Wenger wasn’t asleep this whole time. Sneaky sneaky. Well, congrats to the gunners, you just pulled the coup of the transfer market.

    • headbandsandheartbreak September 2, 2013 at 6:33 pm #

They certainly did. Wily old Arsene.

I’m going to go out to dinner now and get tipsy.

    • jellyace September 2, 2013 at 11:11 pm #

Wenger was just waiting for the last transfer day when prices drop. Wisse guy! I shall miss Ozil but am kinda excited to see him with the Gunners, speaking English and hanging with Poldi and Per.

  14. SR 4 September 2, 2013 at 6:29 pm #

I think we are all in need of a Sergio hug. Poor Sergio probably needs a hug himself :(.

    • Laura Witrak September 2, 2013 at 6:45 pm #

Sergio will have to find a new fashion intern. Isco?

Good luck, Mesut! You are a class act!

      • SR 4 September 2, 2013 at 7:22 pm #

They won´t be able to exchange cars, clothes or hats anymore. This is depressing.
It will be interesting to see who´s going to be Sese´s next fashion buddy. Maybe Isco, maybe even Bale.

        • Laura Witrak September 2, 2013 at 7:52 pm #

I am imagining Sergio coming up with an application form for the new players complete with a request for a 500 word personal fashion style essay.

  15. dreamsequence September 2, 2013 at 6:55 pm #

As a gooner and a madridista I have mixed feelings about this transfer, but I am hopeful. I hate to see him leave Madrid, but at least he’s gone to Arsenal. Here’s to seeing dear Mesut thrive at the Emirates!

    • Kate September 2, 2013 at 7:03 pm #

Exactly! I’m such a fan of both that I’m completely torn between super super sad for Madrid and completely ecstatic for Arsenal. It’s very confusing. I think he’ll do well at Arsenal, though, and he’ll certainly be appreciated!!

  16. Katie Ann September 2, 2013 at 6:58 pm #

I’m in favor of a Wozil (Ozil and Wojciech Szczesny) bromance. I think it has potential.

    • dreamsequence September 2, 2013 at 10:01 pm #

What about Mesut and Santi Cazorla…Manti?

How about for Giroud + Ozil = GIROZIL!

  17. Shan September 2, 2013 at 7:55 pm #

I’ve always thought Arsenal was a respectable team. But I will miss him. Wasn’t so sure about him when he first arrived in Madrid but he certainly won me over very quickly. There goes another one of my favorites… I should probably try to stop getting so attached to these players. But praise Jesus that the mercado de fichajes is over! I (barely) survived another.

  18. Kelsey September 2, 2013 at 8:05 pm #

I guess I don’t understand why he didn’t try to fight for a place in the starting XI. Anyway, good luck at Arsenal!!!!!

    • ayen September 2, 2013 at 9:41 pm #

I think he would have loved to stay but I guess it was the club that wants him out. And also the news has it that Carlito preferred di Maria over Ozil. It’s one thing that I don’t I understand though, Ozil is a way much better than di Maria (no offense to his fans but I just notice him by his diving antics)

      • dreamsequence September 2, 2013 at 10:05 pm #

I agree here. di Maria is brilliant, but I was always left a little cold by how easily he goes to ground. I always felt that Mesut’s pass accuracy was better as well. Well, at least he isn’t going to be Ancelloti’s benchwarmer. I still think it was a huge mistake to sell him.

      • headbandsandheartbreak September 2, 2013 at 10:25 pm #

My two cents on this? I don’t think he wanted to leave either but I don’t think it was a question of the club wanting him out. His dad (who is also his agent) tried to push for a renegotiation of his contract (which ran until 2016) and get him 7 million a year or they would entertain other offers. The club seems to have said no (The Peez is not one for ultimatums, I am sure) and called his bluff so I’m guessing his dad didn’t want to back down and went for the $ at Arsenal. I think Mesut would have happily stayed put. His dad seems much more ambitious for him. Sadly, I think that backfired for both Mesut and RM. He’ll be great at Arsenal, but it’s not Real Madrid. What a mess.

        • ayen September 2, 2013 at 11:50 pm #

By reading your comment I realize he was just only 24, there’s still a bright future waiting for him in Arsenal

        • Lici September 3, 2013 at 4:17 am #

Maybe it’s a shrewd move for him, I think he could have stayed and fought for a place at Real but he should get more game time at Arsenal and in a World Cup year, that could be important. He’s proved himself to be an excellent player and Arsenal appreciate that, he can only get better surely in that scenario than frustrated in Madrid?

  19. Natalie September 2, 2013 at 8:15 pm #

I think this is a mistake for him, no offense to any arsenal fans here but they won’t go far in champions league and they cannot win premier league. Bad call, should have stayed with ur agent as he would have advised otherwise

    • randomthoughts57 September 2, 2013 at 9:39 pm #

as sad as I am, I think this is a good move for him – it’ll let him come into his own instead of playing in the shadows of other big names at RM. he’s an underrated player and Ancelotti prefers Isco and Di Maria over him (which is completely understandable considering how well both are playing currently). I also think that he didn’t want to end up like Kaka or Higuain. Arsenal suits the way he plays and he’ll have more freedom like he does for the German NT, where he’s outstanding. at the end of the day I think he (like most athletes) would rather compete than sit on the bench of a great team.

      • Natalie September 2, 2013 at 11:09 pm #

Or he will be like pirata and QPR. Poor guy didn’t get much playing time, ended up playing for their B team and came back to spain after a horror of a year.

        • randomthoughts57 September 3, 2013 at 9:48 am #

I highly doubt Ozil will be like Pirata. Arsenal paid a club record fee (third highest by any EPL team) to bring Ozil so he’ll be a regular starter.

      • jellyace September 2, 2013 at 11:22 pm #

Yes, I always felt like Mesut’s style was fettered and hesitant at RM, whereas he is magnificent on the German NT.

  20. ayen September 2, 2013 at 9:45 pm #

It was a good thing the Calletti/Albiol/Pipita transfers was done earlier, had it been now I would get a heart attack by all the club’s late transfers.

Is anyone on Instagram? Sergio IG’d a photo of him holding the last jersey Mesut wore! AND Mesut IG’d a photo of him and Sami K. Very sweet. Also, Sese messed up in an interview stating Mesut was the last player he would have leave from the team. Oof. Not great team building, Sese!

  24. Mimi September 3, 2013 at 1:25 am #

Very sad. I hope he packed his ‘SR4’ cap. A ManUtd supporter but I always had (still do with the ever amazing Giroud) a thing for Arsenal boys. Well, at least now when they are playing everybody else I will have Mesut and Giroud to cheer for.

    Welcome to EPL Ozil.

  26. Luz September 3, 2013 at 4:32 am #

Like everyone else, I’m sad that Özil went to the Gunners (although I have a soft spot for them).

However, players and fans of Arsenal are over the moon because of Özil – so I’m happy for him and he deserves regular playing-time which I doubt he would be able to get in Real Madrid this season. As far as I understand a so-called ‘old-fashioned’ no. 10 doesn’t fit Carlo’s new system.

    Here’s a link to a little piece on Özil – I thought it was a good read : http://www.managingmadrid.com/2013/9/3/4688294/the-mesut-ozil-transfer-thoughts-a-fond-farewell

    Good luck, Avatar Eyes.

    • Luz September 3, 2013 at 5:00 am #

BTW, was I the only one who cried ACTUAL tears when it came out that Mesut was leaving. I found it a bit embarrassing that I cried – I’m a bit too old….

      • Ula R. (@blue_eyed188) September 3, 2013 at 5:06 am #

No, you weren’t alone, and as a person in Mesut’s age i feel a little weird about it – it’s not the first time player i like leaves his team, but i’ve never reacted that heavily, why now?

      • mygypsyspirit September 3, 2013 at 5:40 am #

Oh no… I’m far too old for tears and I was at work as the hints started coming in (I work nights so I’m up when it’s bright and early in Europe). Add the fact that I’ve been a HUGE Kaka fan since he first moved to Milan then to Madrid… I was trying not to cry at work. I let it all come out on the drive home.

        • ayen September 3, 2013 at 6:25 am #

I would have cried too if hadn’t seen how much he was welcome in Milan. Plus Adriano Galliani saying this :”It was around 2.30 last night when the deal was done. Now I hope Kakà’s orphans, the 12,00 or 15,000 fans that stopped coming to the stadium when he left, will come back now that Kakà’s returned. He really made a huge effort to come back and has shown real affection for the jersey.”

          • mygypsyspirit September 3, 2013 at 7:29 am #

I saw how happy he was and how welcome he was and I still cried. I was sad and happy at the same time.

        • Luz September 3, 2013 at 7:11 am #

Oh wow, this transfer window must have been so hard on you.
I’m a HUGE Ronaldo (CR7) fan – followed him since 2004 – he’s the reason I started following Real Madrid (however, I’ve NEVER been a ManU fan) and later I just fell in love with Real Madrid.
Mesut became my second favourite player after WC 2010 and I was so happy RM bought him, so this is first real heartbreak (pun intended). And I thought saying goodbye to Pipita was hard?!

I have always been a ‘one-team-kind-of-girl’ but maybe Arsenal will become my no. 2 – team…. Real Madrid are still no. 1

          • mygypsyspirit September 3, 2013 at 7:36 am #

I’m a United fan and have been a CR7 fan since those days. As I always say, United were my first love (first professional team I ever saw play) but Real Madrid are my true love. I don’t hate any team in the PL (that’s a lie… City and Chelsea are horrid but I like half their players) and I’ve always had a soft spot for Arsenal thanks to Wenger.

I will always wish my little German ninja well.

Additionally, I feel the “heartbreak” portion of this blog’s name is now being felt extra strong.

            • ayen September 3, 2013 at 8:07 am #

I love Criska and was very happy to seeing them play together. But I guess this is life, we all have to move on. I just look forward to Kaka playing at his best in Milan and being called up his national team.

Also, mostly the football clubs that I love are from EPL.

              • mygypsyspirit September 3, 2013 at 11:17 am #

100% agree about Kaka. I was a constant “No! Wait and see! He’ll be back!” screamer…

  30. MissLadya September 3, 2013 at 7:25 am #

Still trying to collect the bits of my heart off the floor.

I don’t know how much daddy dearest’s interference played in his departure, but a part of me suspects Mesut agreed to it because he didn’t want to end up like Kaka. Three years ago he arrived at Real and it resulted in Kaka being benched almost all the time. Now the tables appear to have been turned with both Isco and Bale joining and Kaka departing. Mesut would be the new fall guy, which is even more upsetting because he wasn’t injured (as Kaka had been at the time) nor was he playing poorly. In that case, it was wise of him to leave before he was assigned the new benchwarmer. He deserves much better than that.

And it irks me that people are asking why Mesut didn’t stay and “fight” for a place on the team. Again: Kaka. Kaka fought for four long years. One of the best players in the world, who worked and practiced diligently, and he barely got a look in. The few times he was allowed to play he played well, even exceptional, and yet still it wasn’t enough. I can’t think of a more earnest and hard-working person as Kaka, and yet for all the “fighting” he did it did him no good. Bale’s price tag guarantees him a spot on the squad, and Mesut was already been moved aside for Isco to play in the middle. He would have been fighting a losing battle and wasting good years of his life.

All these farewells from his team mates (Sergio posted a Serzil vid! DAMN IT, MAN, you’re NOT helping!!) will have me blubbering for days.

    • mygypsyspirit September 3, 2013 at 7:33 am #

And all of this was what I was trying to say in anger on twitter yesterday ha!

      • MissLadya September 3, 2013 at 8:17 am #

In a way, I can’t complain too much, because even when I was kicking and screaming about him leaving I would have hate to see him stay and then not be given much playing time. Then I’m sure a lot of us would be going, “Man, he should have left when he had the chance!” Now he can go and prove himself in the PL and I’d be lying if I said I’m not crossing my fingers, hoping he’ll show Real how big a mistake it was to ever doubt him. Had hopes of him establishing himself as a Spanish mainstay, but maybe he’ll plant deeper roots in the EPL. You go and prove them wrong, Bambi!

That said, while I won’t be following Real as closely as before, there are still numerous players on the team (well, what’s left of *my* team) that I love and I do want to see them reach La Decima. And now I get to watch the Bale saga unfold from a more neutral stand point. Will he live up to his price? Am torn because I would love nothing more for him to flop, just to spite Perez, but that would be wholly unfair to Bale himself, who just wants to play for his dream club. So … I wish Bale all the best. I’ll just have to come up with some petty revenge dream that will not involve Bale …

Also … PIPZIL reunion!!! Arsenal v Napoli in CL group! Hola again, Higuain! And Arsenal v Dortmund! German smorgasbord! 😀

      • ayen September 3, 2013 at 8:19 am #

*Kaka fought for four long years.* – The time he wasted and all the people branding him as the biggest flop just kills me. Now is his time to shine and really show that he still got the talent of a world champion

  31. Ula R. (@blue_eyed188) September 3, 2013 at 7:31 am #

Now when i think about it… Maybe liking Arsenal won’t be so difficult, there are so many polish names, so it’ll be like enjoying BVB because of Lewandowski and Błaszczykowski, hahah 😉 And Mesut is only a cherry on a cake 😉 think positive, think positive…

    • ayen September 3, 2013 at 8:24 am #

I am heartbroken. Wtf are they thinking of?

  33. Backwards September 3, 2013 at 8:59 am #

Anyone else suffering from a transfer day hangover?

I remember when he signed for Madrid. He had that semi-mullet hairstyle! 😦
Arsene Wenger has pulled Ozil out of his magic hat! I’m sad but he is as assist machine…something Arsenal are lacking. He’ll do great.

Not that it was in the cards but I would have cracked it if he ended up at Chelsea (can’t stand them but love most of their players…I don’t really know how to reconcile this but that’s another issue for another day :P)

My neighbour is a lifelong Gooner and he has having kittens over the signing.

  34. Meli September 3, 2013 at 11:20 am #

Whish him all the luck in this world. We loved him while he was in RM, but with Iscos arrival he just wasn’t the best anymore.
We shall look farward to a new, better – much better team. We have Christiano and Bale. We have FantastISCO. Lopez and Casillas. Zizu. I could go on and on.

All I can say is Halla Madrid and RIP BARCA ;)!!!

  35. Phédre September 3, 2013 at 11:23 am #

I wish him all the luck in the world and I’m hoping for a Vermaelen/Özil bromance. But reading Sese’s tweets and Mesut’s reaction just made me cry.
I’m trying to see this from a positive point of view, I can see him on my big tv in HD every week instead of some shitty stream now…
I’m so going to miss him!

  36. Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 12:30 pm #

and after all this time, there actually has to be a change to the banner images here……*sob*

  37. Bella September 3, 2013 at 12:39 pm #

I would just like to point out all the love going down on twitter between Sergzil!! I am gonna miss him :/

  38. Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 12:40 pm #

If this is even a little bit true, I think I’m pissed!
Ozil 4 days ago: ”I can promise now that i will fulfill my contract with Real Madrid until 2016. What happens after that i dont know”

    • headbandsandheartbreak September 3, 2013 at 4:29 pm #

The deal went down in the last few days of the transfer window. It was very last minute. He said in an interview that when he made those comments, they were true and he had no idea how this was all going to go down in the end. If you knew anything about him, you’d give him the benefit of the doubt.

I am amazed that you are “pissed” over a comment about a team that you have been, at best, marginally “supporting” for less than a month and know next to nothing about. Like it affects you somehow as a fan. It really, really doesn’t. Save your outrage, okay? These are the kind of comments that absolutely infuriate me. JFC. My eyes are about to roll right out of my head.

I can’t even today. I am just not in the mood for this shit.

      • Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 4:34 pm #

i wasn’t being serious, just with a snicker! Obviously emotions are prickly today. That’s why I said ‘I think’ I’m pissed…..with my hands on my hips and a grimace on my face. i liked Ozil of course, and think he was integral to the team. He seemed to have a real rhythm with the other players is all i meant. Just kind of surprised, and it seems I’m not the only one.

        • Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 4:35 pm #

i understand this is part of professional sports, but it kind of sucks when people are treated like disposable goods. It’s the nature of the beast of course, and every team has to make the best financial decisions for the success of the team. still stinks.

        • headbandsandheartbreak September 3, 2013 at 4:39 pm #

Yeah, that’s not how your comment came off. AT ALL. And if you know emotions are prickly today, why bait the bear? Nothing that you “meant” to convey was expressed in that comment.

EVERYONE is surprised. INCLUDING him. So perhaps you might want to step away from the comments section, at least where Mesut is concerned for a bit. Let us lick our wounds, okay?

          • Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 4:46 pm #

Obviously. I’m trying to be sympathetic! Although relatively new (not really, but I’ll agree just to squelch the venom), I just got used to the team as they were. It was a great discovery process for me. I’m nothing if not flexible, so let’s see how this season goes, and i once again get familiar with the new lineup…..

            • headbandsandheartbreak September 3, 2013 at 5:24 pm #

Not really? ::snort:: You were “supporting” Barca (A team you admitted that you didn’t actually watch but felt bad for them because they were having a “tough season”) and Sergio’s abs up until the ICC a few weeks ago and then you started gushing about “I think I’m turning into a Real Madrid fan. What have you all done to me?!?!” Please don’t confuse that with actually really supporting the team or knowing more than fuck all about them.

Can you please do me a huge favor and just…not…for a few days? I don’t have the energy to deal with this.

              • Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 7:40 pm #

Wow that was harsh. Gees. So be it…

                • headbandsandheartbreak September 3, 2013 at 9:17 pm #

Keep pushing and that’s what you’ll get. You just don’t know when to quit, even when it’s more than obvious that you’re pissing someone off. And then you’re all like “What did I do?!” ::big innocent eyes::: I know you’re more intelligent than that. Instead of reveling in being a dilettante, why not really commit to learning about the sport? I’ve said this so many times. If you put your boundless enthusiasm toward that people might have more respect for you here.

Nobody likes a tourist, you know? I get the idea that if something else caught your fancy you’d be off in a flash. Just look at your love of Barca. What did that last? Like 2 months? Could you even name all the players on the team before you jettisoned them from your affections? Your lack of commitment coupled with your penchant for making snap judgments on things you are not well versed in makes for annoying and frustrating reading. And it ain’t just me that feels this way.

There’s lots of people here who are just learning about the sport, the team, etc. but you don’t see them making pronouncements, stepping on toes, etc. They’re making an effort, asking questions, *listening* and trying to get the lay of the land.

You picked a very bad time to prattle on. If you were even vaguely paying attention to how people are feeling the past few days, you’d be aware of that and keep schtum. I’m more than willing to tell people exactly what I think right now. Mess with the bull, get the horns. So yes, please give me a little vacation from this shit, okay? Thanks.

Truth be told at first I did feel a bit hurt/betrayed, because when he said it I was greatly relieved, after weeks of anxiety, only to get my heart broken (the name of this website has become scarily accurate; to think there was a time when Mesut cutting his hair was considered the ultimate heart breaker). But in hindsight I do believe that HE believed he would be staying, and that things just turned sour soon after; that, after voicing his faith in the club, he was then disappointed when it wasn’t returned wholeheartedly. As someone who doesn’t know Mesut personally (AND OH GOD WHY DON’T I?!? We’d make amazing besties!! And then I’d be able to draw him while he sleeps!), I can’t pretend to know what he’s thinking, but if there’s one thing Mesut doesn’t strike me as it’s a bold-faced liar. He wouldn’t “promise” something while knowing he wouldn’t be fulfilling it. Had he known he’d be leaving he would have avoided answering altogether, or try to (clumsily) redirect the question, but not outright lie.

  39. cara September 3, 2013 at 12:55 pm #

ugh all the twitter love between all the boys for mesut is just so heart wrenching.. here comes the waterworks..again…

  40. Dr Heidi September 3, 2013 at 4:22 pm #

Emotions are understandably running high worldwide……

  41. Mimi September 4, 2013 at 1:23 am #

I had some followers on Twitter complaining that teammates are showing more love towards Ozil than with Kaka. Can you imagine how hard it was to explain all of Ozil’s bromances and each explanation had to be done in not more than 140 characters? I am sure not even Ozil himself could do that, so I collected email addreses and I got work to do with my lunch hour!

    • MissLadya September 4, 2013 at 9:35 am #

People pointing fingers at EVERYTHING now.

Of course, the bromances feature in. He got along with everyone in the locker room. When those annoying locker room divide rumors were fluttering about, Mesut was one of the few plays uninvolved yet still friends with everyone. He was adored by his team mates.

Özil’s departure’s getting more attention because it caught so many off guard, I believe. When I heard Kaka returned to Milan I was genuinely happy for him because it was hard seeing such a great player and person spend so much time on the bench. And people have been speculating about him leaving for the past couple of years. Didn’t Real try to sell him last year but in the end couldn’t find anyone to pay his wages? It was just a long time coming.

With Mesut it just happened so suddenly. Sure, there were rumors, but judging by the players’ reactions they didn’t believe he’d leave. Part of me feels sad that it happened during international break, and that they weren’t able to say their “final” goodbyes personally. Am sure there’s been a lot of phone calls, though :’)

      • Mimi September 5, 2013 at 1:44 am #

May be, and just may be he’ll have to go to Madrid to get his things before reporting at Arsenal. I hope he does.

      • Mimi September 5, 2013 at 1:46 am #

On the phone calls I just imagined Ozil calling Sergio to break the news that he’s moving to Arsenal. “Sese, are you seated? Good, I am going to tell you something but promise me you won’t cry ……”

  42. Ula R. (@blue_eyed188) September 4, 2013 at 8:24 am #

This “Let’s go Gunners!” is the saddest thing i’ve ever heard… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Qj7BpRuM_w Hope it’ll be more cheerful after couple of games…

    • MissLadya September 4, 2013 at 10:17 am #

I’m sure it will be. If there’s one positive thing in all of this, it’s that he will certainly be welcomed with open arms in London. Gooners are still pissing themselves with glee, Arsenal players are all fanboying over him, and he’s got Podolski and Mertesacker to show him the ropes. And if there’s one thing our Bambi’s good at (other than being a magician on the field), it’s getting people to fawn and coo over him off the pitch–provided Lukas will allow anyone near him ^_^

Always made it loud and clear that I’m not a madridista (Guess I’m an … Özilista(??)), but to my surprise I am now determined to follow both Mesut’s new career at Arsenal AND Real Madrid’s upcoming season. Despite my strong reservations towards the club itself, I’ve just grown too attached to the squad to turn the other way. I hope for the best for both parties now ❤

    • Mimi September 5, 2013 at 1:40 am #

Yeah that was sad. Is it just me or does he not look convincing with that ‘Let’s go Gunners’?

  43. Ula R. (@blue_eyed188) September 4, 2013 at 3:02 pm #

one thing that always makes me happy is hearing him speaking english, so sweet (i want to believe he’s tired, not sorrowful…) http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/mesut-s-message-to-the-arsenal-fans

    • Mimi September 5, 2013 at 1:43 am #

I must login to see the message? Well, I guess it is meant for Arsenal faithfuls, I’ll take your word for it.
