Updated: Awards, Nominations, & Accomplishments of Our Oh So Talented Boys

2 Dec

The boys have been enjoying a two day break, a well deserved break I must say! They’ll return to training tomorrow where they’ll be in CdR mode, preparing for their meet up with Olimpic de Xativa. What happens when the Mister gives you a couple days off? It becomes time to pick up all the awards you’ve racked up since last season! At least that’s how Cristiano spent most of his day. His first pick up was the Alfredo Di Stefano Trophy.

From Realmadrid.com

Real Madrid was honoured at the Marca Football awards, which were held in the Red Room of the Teatros del Canal. Cristiano Ronaldo, for the second consecutive occasion, was presented with the Alfredo Di Stéfano Trophy for the previous season’s best player by Di Stéfano, the club’s honorary president. “The most important thing is to enjoy this prize. It means a lot that Di Stéfano has given it to me, and that he made a big sacrifice to come and give it to me. I have seen him play and he was phenomenal.” The president Florentino Pérez; Miguel Pardeza, the director de Football; and Emilio Butragueño, the director of Institutional Relations, also attended the ceremony.

Cristiano Ronaldo was honoured with the Alfredo Di Stéfano Trophy which the newspaper Marca awards to the best player of the previous Liga season. The Portuguese player, who scored 32 points, beating Messi by six, spoke about Real Madrid’s chances of winning trophies this season and about whether his target for this season is the World Cup: “At the moment I am only thinking about winning La Liga and the Champions League, which you have to try to do every season at a club like Real Madrid. And I will think about the World Cup when that comes around.”

Ronaldo was clear when asked about his recovery and whether he has spoken to Sep Blatter, the president of FIFA: “I am not injured and I do not have his phone number.” On the other hand, on the subject of his conversation at the start of the event with Alejandro Rodríguez, a Madrid supporter who won the Puerta-Jarque Fair Play Trophy, he said: “I was surprised by his story and I have signed a shirt for him”.

Finally, on the subject of Atlético’s performance this season, he said: “I am not surprised because they have looked strong to me since last season. It is a very well organized team which will fight for la Liga this season, even though I am convinced that we will win it.”

Alfredo Di Stéfano could not hide his emotion when he talked about Cristiano Ronaldo and when he gave him the award that bears his name: “He deserves it. He is a born goal-scorer. He plays very well and to win this prize you have to be good at everything. He is doing very well and everyone at Madrid wants him to carry on like that”.

G-Money is also up for an award, the BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year award, to be exact. They’re getting all DWTS with their voting process, as you can only call in or text your votes, which is odd…but you can find all the info here.

Italy Soccer Champions League

Gareth Bale has been shortlisted for the 2013 BBC Wales sports personality of the year award. Alongside the Real Madrid player, the other challengers for the award are: the Paralympic athlete Aled Sion Davies; the rugby player Leigh Halfpenny; the cyclist Becky James; and the triathlete Non Stanford. The winner will be announced on Monday 9 December, at a ceremony to be held in Cardiff and will be decided by a public vote which closes on Saturday 7 December.

Sure, we’re all awaiting the Balon d’Or ceremony to see if CristianOROnaldo will finally take home the trophy, but it’ll be a big night for Iker too. San Iker is looking to make the 2013 FIFA FIFPro World XI for the sixth consecutive time. Iker! Iker! Iker!

Iker Casillas is one of the five goalkeepers nominated for the 2013 FIFA FIFPro World XI. The White’s Captain has been nominated, along with Buffon, Cech, Neuer, and Valdés, to receive the award, voted on by thousands of players from around the world. The winner’s name will be announced, along with the rest of the players in the FIFA FIFPro World XI at the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013 Gala, which will take place in Zurich (Switzerland) on January 13. Casillas has held the award for the last five seasons and hopes to win it for the 6th year running.

Here are a couple of our boys’ La Liga accomplishments. Lady Edith became the Real Madrid player with the most appearances in 2013, after starting against Valladolid. So far, this year, he’s had 34 appearances.

Real Madrid's Luka Modric celebrates scoring against Real Mallorca during their Spanish first division soccer match at Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid

After not participating in the wins against Almería and Galatasaray, Luka Modric returned to the starting eleven against Valladolid. He took the play-making role alongside Xabi Alonso in the Whites’ 4-0 win. The Croatian has played in 34 La Liga matches in 2013, making him the Real Madrid player with the most appearances this year. Behind him in number of league matches played are Cristiano Ronaldo and Diego López, on 31, and Benzema, on 30.

Modric joined Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 and, after a period of adaptation, he became an essential part of the team from the second half of last season. In fact, he only lost one of 21 La Liga matches that he played in last season’s competition in 2013. He is one of Ancelotti’s most picked players so far this season, having participated in 14 of the 15 league matches that the team have played. He has played in the most La Liga matches of any Whites’ so far this year, with 34 appearances.

Benzy Benz has been doing well lately and is currently enjoying his best scoring streak. Enfer oui!

Real Madrid's Benzema celebrates a goal against Galatasaray during their Champions League soccer match in Istanbul

With his goal against Valladolid, Karim Benzema has officially produced his best scoring run in the Spanish League so far. The White’s number nine has netted in each of the last five league matches, surpassing the record he set in the 2010/11 season, when he scored in each match from league game 26 to 29. Sevilla, Rayo Vallecano, Real Sociedad, Almería and Valladolid have been on the receiving end of the Real Madrid forward’s strikes this time. He scored a total of six goals against these clubs.

Benzema’s run started when Sevilla visited the Benebéu for game 11 of the league. The White’s forward scored a brace as Real thrashed Sevilla 7-3. Three days later, Real Madrid won 2-3 away at Rayo Vallecano in Vallecas, with another goal from the Frenchman. Real Sociedad were beaten 5-1 in the Bernabéu in league game 15 and once again Benzema found the net. After making a decisive contribution in France’s play-off game to reach the world cup finals, he continued his good run in the league, scoring against Almería. Lastly, he got the second in the win against Valladolid.

I was about to put this post up and realized there were more awards to go around! The LFP awards for last season were handed out tonight and three of our boys were among the winners.

Cristiano took home the Most Valuable Player award.

Sergio with his Best Defender award, beating out Jordi Alba & Inigo Martinez.

And Illarra with a steal! He made away with two awards, Player Revelation, which I think is the Breakthrough player award & Best Midfielder. Woot! He beat out Alberto Moreno & Leo Baptistao for the Breakthrough award and Benat Etxebarria & Javi Fuego for Best Midfielder.

UPDATE: San Iker was an award winner tonight, as well. Flo P. accepted the award for Fair Play on Iker’s behalf.
