Pre-Valencia Stuff, The Baby Poses & Iker On El Hormiguero

21 Dec

525-981-_1AM4022Thumb,8I spent the first full day of my vacation tucked into bed covered in Vick’s Vaporub and coughing up a lung. I hate being sick but it seems inevitable when everyone on the subway is hacking and wheezing. Anyhow, getting a lot of sleep seems to have helped a bit. Fingers crossed that I’ve knocked it out of my system. Too much to do over the holiday season!

The team had their last training before tomorrow’s match away at Valencia.

Gareth will not approve of this. Watch your back, Casanova!

Tomorrow will be the last match of 2013 but the team will host an open training on December 31st for members at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Carlo had his presser today discussing Gareth’s injury and Xabi’s contract renewal. Contemplating the latter makes my head explode.

Ancelotti: “We want to finish the year picking up maximum points against Valencia”
by Alberto Navarro

“We face a team that has changed manager and will be more motivated and focused”, the Real Madrid manager stated in the Real Madrid City press room

Carlo Ancelotti appeared before the press at the Real Madrid City press room the day before their league match against Valencia at Mestalla. The Italian coach wished the press a merry Christmas and discussed the last match of 2013: “It’s an important match at an important moment because it’s the last of the year. Valencia has changed manager and we’re going to be playing against a team that is motivated and focused, because that’s what happens when the manager changes. It’s an important match at an important moment because we want to end the year well, playing quality football and picking up the three points. We’ve had good results there in the past, but every match is different and it’ll be difficult”.

_1AM4566Upon being asked about the difficulty the team is having in away matches, he replied: “We’ve played good matches, but it’s normal for it to be more complicated to win away games. It was strange against Osasuna because the first 30 minutes were very good. We started out well and tomorrow we have to continue playing well in order to win”.

397-618-_1AM4583Thumb,8With regards to the renewal of Xabi Alonso’s and information indicating that he won’t be staying in Real Madrid, he stated: “We at the club don’t have that information. Whether he renews or not, he’s our player until this summer and we hope that beyond that too. He’s very important to the team and if he’s available, he’ll play. I haven’t spoken with the club because I don’t need to. All the staff would like him to renew his contract because he’s a very important player and one of the best midfielders in the world”.

56-162-_1AM4612,9In terms of the team’s playing when the Basque player isn’t on the field and the partnership he forms with Modric, he said: “We have important players, but when Xabi Alonso isn’t on the field we also resolve the situation well. Alonso’s talent gives us more confidence in our play as well as boosting the other players. At the moment he forms a great partnership with Modric. They’ve done well, although the other midfielders are also doing well”.

309-101-_1AM4558Thumb,8Ancelotti was also asked about Gareth Bale’s recovery: “The blow he received isn’t important, but he isn’t able to play against Valencia because he hasn’t had enough time to recover”. He revealed who will be substituting him at Mestalla: “It will be Di María”.

117-894-_1AM4613Thumb,8The Real Madrid manager also clarified the statements he made at the end of the Copa del Rey return-leg match against Olímpic de Xàtiva: “I said that I didn’t like the second half against Olímpic de Xàtiva. There weren’t only academy players out on the field but also players with a lot of experience. It was a criticism of the team, not of the younger players. The team’s general attitude in the second half wasn’t good”.

339-950-_1AM4600Thumb,22Lastly, when asked to comment on the European Commission’s investigation of Spanish football, he replied: “The subject isn’t sport related and I don’t wish to speak about it. I don’t think Real Madrid has any problems and we’re waiting to see what happens. I don’t have a lot of information about it”.

The following players were called up:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Diego López and Jesús.
Defenders: Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Carvajal, Arbeloa, Llorente and Nacho.
Midfielders: Xabi Alonso, Casemiro, Modric, Di María, Isco and Illarra.
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Jesé and Morata.

Iker was on El Hormiguero on the 19th and he said that San Baby is due in 2 weeks! Very exciting news. You can watch the whole program here. Sadly, Sergio didn’t come on and serenade Iker with a guitar.

And one last thing, El Pirata posted a Christmas picture with Real Sociedad. He looks so happy. Can’t wait to see him back on the pitch.

Bb3m-gPIUAAdOTOAnd now I’m off to add those Sergzil gifs to the Daily Drool post. Give me a few minutes and I’ll have them up.

Just imagining what Sergio serenading Iker would look like. Cannot. Stop. Laughing. Ahh, here’s to a missed opportunity for football moment of the year.

And is adidas taking over the world? I feel like every player photo I’ve seen of late there’s the logo.
