Thomas Hitzlsperger Comes Out

8 Jan

{89A905CB-44DE-4155-96D1-3A893DD8CDD1}Thomas Hitzlsperger, who retired in September 2013 has revealed that he is gay. The 31 year old central midfielder played in the EPL (Aston Villa, West Ham, Everton), Serie A (Lazio), Bundesliga (Wolfsburg, Stuttgart) and League 2 (Chesterfield). He represented Germany at the U19 (as captain), U21 and senior levels.

His Germany teammate Lukas Podolski tweeted “”Brave and right decision. Respect, Thomas Hitzlsperger. His outing is a important sign in our time.” Many others including his former club, Aston Villa, have expressed their support.  I look forward to a day when this will no longer be such big news. I admire & wholeheartedly support Thomas’s decision to come forward. This has got to be a relief for him. I hope that many others will follow.

Thanks to watishista Tali for sending in the news.

Totally agree with you, Lola…glad for him and can’t wait til this is “no news”. Good for Poldi and his good comments.

Agreed – I hope that we’ll eventually get to a point where gay public figure aren’t news. In the meantime, I hope Thomas continues to get support from the football community. Poldi’s comments are heartening!

I haven’t had a lot of time lately to follow/comment on H&H, but this brings me out of lurkdom… Hitzlsperger is such an intelligent and cool guy, I’ve been following his column in “Die Zeit” regularly and have been admiring his well-spokenness and calm attitude for years.
Good on him for taking this huge step. I’m very happy to see the the support all over (social) media, too. And, like you guys, hope that being gay in football will become a non-issue sooner rather than later.
