Ancelotti: “At this stage every game is difficult but the team are doing well”

“We need concentration and a good attitude and the most important thing is to keep our heads”, added the Italian coach

The Whites face Getafe away from home in the 24th match of the season in La Liga. Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media in the press room and analysed the game. The coach said: “Right now every game is complicated, especially when you have to play away. Getafe have had a few problems in their last games. We’re going to try to play as a team and with plenty of intensity and concentration. At this stage of the season every game is very complicated and we have to prepare the match well. The team are doing well physically and, as always, we need concentration and a good attitude. The most important thing is to keep our heads. We need to be prepared physically and mentally. We’re feeling fresh right now. We’ve played a lot of games since the start of the year but we’ve recovered well”.

When asked about the players who will be picked for the match and about the fitness of Marcelo and Coentrão, Ancelotti stated: “They’re both available. The only ones who won’t be are Morata and Ronaldo, and maybe Carvajal, who didn’t finish too well in the game against Atlético Madrid. The others are all available. I’ll make up my mind about the left-back position tomorrow”. As for Varane, he said: “His reaction was very good. His knee is dry and he’ll be in the squad. I don’t think he’ll start the game but he’s available”.

Benzema is in great form right now and is scoring regularly. Ancelotti praised the quality of the French forward: “He’s doing very well. He’s had a continuous run in the team and he’s playing very well. He’s scoring goals and is an important player for us. The renewal of his contract is a matter for the club, not for me. Everybody is very pleased because he’s doing really well”.

As for being without Cristiano Ronaldo for the match, the appeal against his suspension and the fact that he was hit by an object thrown by the crowd last Tuesday in the Vicente Calderón Stadium, he explained: “He has three free days. Today, tomorrow and Monday. He’s fine, We’re waiting for a reply from the Committee, but the player is fine and he doesn’t have any problems. He played very well against Atlético Madrid. He’s obviously not happy because he wants to play in every game but we have to wait for the decision. It’s strange. We lodged the appeal on Tuesday so they’ve had time to make a decision. Fortunately, we’re not used to preparing matches without Ronaldo. We’ve done it a few times because of an injury and it’s the same. It’s not different. As for the throwing of the cigarette lighter, I don’t want to get involved in that subject. When they’re talking about money, it’s best not to say anything. But I can talk about Cristiano’s suspension as it’s not normal for him to get a three match suspension and we hope to get that reduced”.

When asked about the rotation in goal of Casillas and Diego López compared to the rotation he applied at AC Milan with Abbiati and Dida, he pointed out: “It was different with Abbiati because he began the season and then he had a problem with an injury and he was out for a month. I played Dida, he did very well and he carried on playing. It’s different. I’ve explained the reason many times. I have two very good goalkeepers and I want to show my confidence in both. I don’t know if it’s fair or not. I don’t know if this motivates players to do better but I think this was a good decision to motivate both of them. They’re doing very well and they’re going to continue”.

When he was asked about Isco’s participation in the team, he explained: “It’s basically a tactical reason because in this system it’s more difficult for him. I think he played really well against Atlético Madrid in Benzema’s position, although obviously with different characteristics. I think that he can play like that or as midfielder in other games with this system. The ideal position for him is obviously as an attacking midfielder. It’s more difficult for him with this system. It’s a temporary problem as Isco’s future is very clear. He’s been an important player this season. I haven’t forgotten that he scored a lot of goals at the start of the season, when the team still wasn’t in good shape and he helped to get a lot of points. It’s a temporary problem. He’s a hard-working and professional player and doesn’t have any problems here. It’s logical that he’s not pleased because he wants to play. But in the match against Atlético Madrid he showed that he is ready to play and that means that he is training well”.

As for the final of the Copa del Rey and the date on which it will be held, the Italian coach made his preference clear: “It’s not something that worries me right now. We have to hope for a decision that is fair for everybody. It’s difficult to say because the final is at the end of April and nobody knows how the team will be by then. The ideal thing is to have a week to prepare the final. Three or four days is enough too. We’re used to playing every three or four days”.

Finally, he spoke about Castilla and the work that José Manuel Díaz is doing: “They’re working very well. After a difficult start to the season, they’re picking up points and are playing well. Things are going well now, they’ve won some points and I think that the coaches and the players are all working very well. That’s great”.

The following players were called up for the match.

REAL MADRID MATCHDAY SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Casillas, Diego López & Pacheco.
Defenders: Varane, Pepe, Ramos, Coentrão, Marcelo, Carvajal, Arbeloa & Nacho.
Midfielders: Bale, Xabi Alonso, Casemiro, Modric, Di María, Isco & Illarra.
Forwards: Benzema & Jesé.

INJURIES:
Jesús: flu.
Morata: left thigh strain.

Don’t know if you guys saw this but the Villareal-Celta de Vigo match had to be delayed when someone threw a canister of tear gas onto the pitch. Unreal. Shit is getting out of control – something really needs to be done.
