Real Madrid Website “Redesign”

"Dear God, what have they done?!?"

“Dear God, what have they done?!?”

I got home after a hella long stress filled work day  and wanted to update the blog. Of course I went the mothership  to see the training pictures and what do you know, they had launched a redesign. A redesign that made me scream with frustration. As someone who works in tech and just spent the last 2+ years working on developing a completely new proprietary CMS (and front facing sites for a large syndicated network) from scratch, believe me, I know what goes into creating a site. I went ballistic when I attempted to navigate through the new “improved” mothership. My focus is primarily on UX (user experience) and the most polite thing I can say is that after 3 minutes I wanted to punch that website into infinity and beyond. Just…UGH.  I can’t even go into it but I’ve got a laundry list of things that just do not work for me and I’m the end user so…  Direct your pity to poor watishista mygypsyspirit who got a long rant filled email about the website at like 12:30 AM.

"What the what?"

“What the what?”

Anyhow, I did appreciate a few things: responsive design (which at this point needs to be standard on any website), a cleaner look (but JFC they way they organize the news on the main page…) , hi res images (albeit ones that are almost impossible to save without adding 18 steps to the process)  and the social media sharing buttons which are a nice touch but overall,  I am not pleased.

I can already say with great certainty that I’ll personally be spending less time on the site and seeking information via other channels because it’s a pain in the arse to navigate through the quagmire looking for stuff (and PS, RM web peeps, just so you know, yesterday’s training photo gallery, only available on the Spanish site, doesn’t load). I would love to know what their UX due diligence and discovery process was, who beta tested that shit and what the QA process was like because fucking hell….

"Um, what's the deal with this repetitive navigation?"

“Um, what’s the deal with this repetitive navigation?”

Don’t mind me, I’ve been living and breathing this shit for over 2 years so it’s nearly intolerable for me to have to look at something that takes the end user so little into account.

I certainly did enjoy these pictures of our boys (for the most part) staring dopily at the website. Some of them looked so confused!

"Why am I not on the front page?!"

“Why isn’t there more me on the front page?!”

"Why isn't there more Cris on the front page?!"

“Why isn’t there more Cris on the front page?!”

"They got rid of my bleached hair pictures. Why did they do that?!"

“They got rid of my bleached hair pictures!?! But it looked so good!”

"They told me I could fill this page with selfies!"

“They told me I could fill this page with selfies!” (Lozil approves)

"Oooh, can't wait to see Lozil's head explode when she sees this redesign shit!"

“Oooh, can’t wait to see Lozil’s head explode when she sees this redesign shit!”

So in a nutshell, I’m not fangirling over this redesign. Maybe I’ll get used to it, but I’m not holding out hope.

After that teal deer reaction, I’m going to do a training post. If you did read this, thanks for humoring the angry techie.

I don’t like it too, not at all. They tried to make it look clean and modern but in the end it looks just dated and ugly. Clean and modern might not be the best design guidelines anyway when creating a site that has to contain lot of pictures and information – too much of anything destroys the classy modern look and feel of the site…

It’a bit difficult to navigate too, and seems to have some problems when viewing with iPad: I of course first went to browse pictures of the players and it was very difficult to scroll them and open them with iPad… I bet they have paid big money for some company for that redesign, but it is not nice at all.
