Provisional World Cup 2014 Squad List For Spain Released

13 May

La Roja provisionalThe provisional squad list for Spain has been released! A few surprises but not as many as I expected.

Here’s the squad list:

Goalkeepers: Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, David de Gea.

Defenders: César Azpilicueta, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba, Alberto Moreno, Javi Martínez, Raúl Albiol, Juanfran Torres, Dani Carvajal.

Midfielders: Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Koke Resurrección, Ander Iturraspe, Xavi Hernández, Thiago Alcántara, Jesús Navas, David Silva, Cesc Fàbregas, Juan Mata, Santi Cazorla, Andrés Iniesta.

Forwards: Pedro Rodríguez, Diego Costa, David Villa, Fernando Torres, Álvaro Negredo, Fernando Llorente.

I’m sad to see only 4 Real Madrid players called up but delighted that one of them is Dani Carvajal.  He’s been working hard this season. He joins Ander Iturraspe & David De Gea as the only uncapped players called up.

The Real Madrid Drama Llama has already started taking craps all over the internet and trying to  stir the resulting shit. People are saying that Arbeloa wasn’t picked because he and Iker are feuding and  that he & Diego Costa would be at each other’s throats. I gotta shake my head. What bullshit! Apparently these drama queens seem to forget the very real fact that Arbeloa cracked his fucking patella and just played his first match since early March this past Sunday. Hell, he didn’t even start training with the team again fully until May 1. That’s less than 2 weeks ago! We all knew back in March when the severity of the injury was announced that he had an extremely slim chance of making the World Cup squad. But no, the ever ridiculous and gullible among the fandom would rather believe in conspiracy theories and drama than face up to reality. I find this sort of behavior so tiring and counterproductive.   Spain assistant manager Toni Grande even confirmed how difficult a choice it was to leave him out and said it was the injury that was the deciding factor. I’ll be sad for no reunion of The Double As, but hey, I knew it was a long shot at best.

But let’s concentrate on the bromantic positives of this provisional list, shall we? Sernando! Tormata! Sertormata! The Dahveeds! Sese & his little bird! Flori & Javi! With the added bonus of Pepe Reina just being his usual nutsballs self!

The final squad will be announced May 25th.

I’m getting excited about the start of the World Cup. I can’t believe that it’s less than a month away.

I’m sorry but I am one of those who think that leaving Arbeloa out has other reasons than just his injury. Of course the injury came conveniently, to justify leaving him out of the squad, but even before the injury Del Bosque left Arbeloa out of Italy-Spain friendly squad, and when asked about it, he gave a rather strange answer: he started to say that Arbeloa was left out for reasons that are person… then changed his answer. In one interview he also said he left Arbeloa out for “pressure”, and I think that he means the press and hate campaign that was at it highest after Atlético match where Arbeloa kicked D. Costa.

Anyway, Arbeloa not in the squad is not a surprise, but Isco not being there is. And not a good surprise. I also am afraid that Carvajal will not make it to the final squad, although I hope he will. But I would bet on Azlipicueta and Juanfran taking the RB position.

Have you noticed Xabi and Álvaro tweeting to each other today after the squad list was released? It is so much fun, Xabi calling Álvaro ‘Trufas’ and promising to do Álvaro’s Spartan shout if La Roja will win 🙂

Yeah, I did see their tweets. Very sweet.

There are people out there who are saying that personal reasons are *solely* why Arbeloa was left out and not even taking the injury into account. I just find that silly. How can they deny that his injury is a major part of being left off the squad? He’s barely fit. I think it would be really pathetic if VdB bowed to media pressure.

Please Del Bosque keep the bromances going, This has to be the last time they will be together

Oh, I’m expecting the World cup and all the bromances ❤

I understand leaving out Arbeloa as it is said that it takes twice the time of the injury leave to regain full fitness. What bugs me a bit is that there are some other players that are on the squad list who have also had recent injuries. Alba, Thiago or Navas for example. I think this is why many (including Guti) think it a bit unfair to leave Arbeloa out because of his injury.

I do like that he included Azpilicueta and Carvajal but sad not to see Spartan Arbeloa out there, i know he was injured and didn’t play for a long time so he needs to recover. I do have issue with Piqué and Fàbregas. Their season was crap and they lost their mojo (at least it looks so to me).
But it won’t be same without the Tarzan that is for sure!!!

Alba and Pique are injured, so how come they made it on the list?

i know, Piqué should not be on that list at all. i know they would like to have a tall guy at the back but given his injuries and entire season, i feel he should not make the final list.

I don’t really buy the personal reasons, but I also know that Del Bosque plays the favorites game REALLY well. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both of the Fernandos left out of the final squad, considering he seems to hate strikers…
But to be honest, even fully fit I wouldn’t have been surprised to see Arbeloa left off. If for nothing more than the monster season that Carvajal had. Arbeloa played very well. And he definitely did his part this season, but Dani moves forward so well (something that Arbeloa improved immensely on this season) that it would be a shame for Del Bosque to leave him out considering Spain’s playing style.
I am not very surprised by this squad. Torres and Mata were really the only surprises for me

Some of the stuff I’ve seen on Twitter about the decision to leave out Arbeloa and not call up Lopez is very depressing. I’ve seen several people wish VDB would die. It’s disgusting.

My first reaction to seeing that list was where is Arby? WHY is he not there. Yeah, logic aside, I am still really upset about him not being on the list. Along with Isco as well.

My eye candy Isco Cutie Pie didn’t make the list, but I am hoping that is because he will be playing for La Rojita. And on that vein, I’m liking the ginger Alberto Moreno!

David De Gea is precious- and he can play- so I like seeing him on the list.

A thought as to why some players who are injured were still called up…my guess is those players are either likely to recover before the World Cup begins, or they have injuries that can at least be treated and maintained through the competition. But it is just a guess.
