El Pirata In Rolling Stone

17 May

Esteban Rolling StoneMan, I feel like I’m just playing catch up these days! I have so much to post and so little time.

Esteban was interviewed in Rolling Stone a few days ago. I was hoping someone would get around to fully translating it before I had a chance to post it. Lo and behold, my prayers were answered!

Thank you a bazillion thousand gazillion times to beckhamkakagranero who posted the translation. Please go check out their blog – lots of good pirate-y action.

Esteban Granero for Rolling Stone Spain: “Mourinho is a huge coach who has won a lot and trains as if he didn’t. “

Esteban Granero (Pozuelo, Madrid, 1987) , alias El Pirata, is considered one of the most charismatic players in the Spanish league. Six months after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament, he has played a lot of rock & roll at home ( “test subjects of my friends”) , he is ready to play again, “I look better than ever, able to play at home without fear,” says exclusively for Rolling Stone.

-With six months out, what do you do?
To enjoy the solitude time with my girlfriend and other friends, also with books and records.

-What did you listen to?
I have listened to the music of my friends, mostly. The Delantera Mítica of Quique González, and Leiva’s Pólvora, who were kind enough to send to me months before publication.

-And books?
Less than I should. On a stretcher and exercising, it is hard to concentrate.

-You’ve been on many teams , which locker room was worse in listening to music?
I can not say one: Getafe was the Andalusian flamenco and not appealo me; Real is the rock in the traditional shows; The Queens Park Rangers was a nightmare. French songs with people shouting a lot and sounds very angry …

-And at Real Madrid?
Too commercial for my taste.

-“The Pirate reads” ; “The Pirate listens music” ”weird” . Does it bother you? Xabi and you are special in footballers?
We are the few, but I believe we are not alone.

-Name me another .
Víctor Valdés, for example.

-I would never say …
It is for aesthetics. Xabi and I are more alike in the way we dress, but Victor shares the similar musical tastes and he is a great guy.

-In Madrid, you were one of the most supportive Mourinhistas. Why?
First, he is my coach and as a professional player, I have to go with him to death; and second, because I respect him. He is a coach like the top of a pine tree, who has gained a lot and even if I was not with him.

-Anything else will …
Have conviction. That’s something few people holding. If more people convinced of their abilities, we would do better in life.

-Did you play in the Real Sociedad even though you had to reduce the salary?
I did it for the love. Talking to a club is like talking to a girl: eyes have to know with whom is watching you.

-Are you one of those who declare “anti-modern football”?
No. Football has changed and is now more commercialized, but in the UK, for example, it works as before. I am very romantic in all aspects of life.

-Where do you want to travel?
I would love to live in Donosti, it’s the early twentieth century… or the Russia of the Tsars.

-If you had the chance with the Delorean ‘Back to the Future’, what concert would you go?
One of Dylan.

-That you can go without Delorean, he is still active.
Everything of Dylan is good!

There were some surprises there (Valdes a secret hipster?), some classic grade A hipster Esteban (whining about everyone else’s shitty taste in music, “talking to a club is like talking to a girl” “I am romantic in all aspects of life.”) and I loved all his mentions of Xabi. I had to squee more than a little bit (and wastishista mygypsyspirit will too), because his fine hipster ass is parked right where we were sitting about 6 weeks ago.  Why the hell wasn’t he just sitting & playing his guitar when we were there?! I was also delighted to get confirmation that he loves Donostia. Being there, it struck me as the perfect place for a hipster and aspiring Xabi like himself.  He got to namecheck his idol Dylan while also mentioning his beloved Leiva & Quique Gonzalez. I approve.  What I didn’t dig so much is they asked one innocuous question about Mou and it becomes the headline of the article. Sigh. Everyone is living in the past. Still. Oh well. If I want to get up and watch the match tomorrow, I really need to hit the hay. Happy Pirate dreams!

How nice to read! I love el Pirata and have missed him much 🙂

But I don’t really see the dressing style similarity between him and Xabi. Xabi as a hipster, I can’t even imagine it.

Really?! They are both known for rocking the peacoats, Ray Bans, perfect pair of worn in jeans, white t-shirt and sweater thing. Both have a very classic sense of style. True, you’ll not see Esteban in a suit but their casual dress sense is almost exactly the same.

What an interesting and revealing interview. VValdes?!? Whodathot?

“To enjoy the solitude time with my girlfriend”? — OK This is news to me! Lozil and mygypsyspirit, what did you girls do to him when you were there? Lozil, I know I promised to tie him down for you, but it looks like he may already be tied down!

Oh, he’s had a girlfriend for quite awhile. He keeps it very private though (much like he did with his former girlfriend Pilar). Her name is Monica and she’s been around since 2012 when we first spotted them together at the Madrid Open. They’re still on as far as I know because I spotted her in the background of one of the videos he made for Real Sociedad TV earlier this year.

Aw, she’s cute. I wonder how hipster is she?

        I guess I don’t stalk enough!

I squeed when I saw the photo! But I was going to work and I forgot to say something to you about it… WE WERE THERE!!!!!

He is NOT allowed to say that Victor is a great guy! Totally ruins my whole “hate fuck” thing *sigh*
