World Cup Profiles – Group D: Costa Rica

30 May

costa-ricaCosta Rica have drawn an incredibly tough group and are definitely the underdog but could they surprise the complacent big boys?

I might have called Italy defensive, but they didn’t employ 5 defenders in order to get to Brazil. Costa Rica did. And it worked. Costa Rica qualified for their 4th World Cup, landing in Group D.

They’ll be looking to make it out of the Group Stage for only the second time. Their first World Cup, 1990, was the only time they advanced.

They played in the pretty infamous (among USA fans) Snowmageddon match against the United States during qualifying. However the match that allowed them to qualify for Brazil was completely out of their hands. After drawing 1-1 with Jamaica, Costa Rica had to hope that Honduras earned at least 1 point in order to move on. Honduras did just that, drawing 1-1 with Panama and sending Costa Rica into World Cup 2014.

Key Players: Randall Brenes made a huge impact for his country. Coming off the bench in most matches, he scored 3 goals in only 2 starts. Joel Campbell and Bryan Ruiz will also be expected to lead Costa Rica’s charge forward.
