World Cup Profiles – Group E: Honduras

hondurasLuis Suarez ((no, not that Luis Suarez) leads Honduras on to their third World Cup appearance.

Honduras find themselves in their second straight World Cup; their third ever. Their first run came in 1982 where they placed 18th. They’ll be looking to improve on their 30th place finish in 2010, where they didn’t score a single goal. And only 2 of their 23 shots were on target in that tournament.

They have a very fit squad, but could lack the playmakers to create enough scoring chances against teams like France and well-organized Switzerland. What they do have, however, is a strong defensive line.

Watch for: Emilio Izaguirre could be Honduras’ best player. He’s very good at getting forward without neglecting his defensive responsibilities. Carlo Costly will be seen as the main scoring threat. Jerry Bengtson scored 9 goals in 12 appearances in qualifying but has had a terrible 2 years with New England Revolution and isn’t seen as much of a threat.

Honduras Provisional squad (Will be updated when final squads announced)

Head Coach: Luis Fernando Suárez (Colombian)
