tumblr_n7dmqoP5Vl1qj5qufo7_500The Socceroos put up another impressive fight, but, in the end, it wasn’t enough against the determined Dutch team.

Australia: Cahill 21’, Jedinak 54’

Netherlands: Robben 20’, Van Persie 58’, Depay 68’

Australia: Ryan, Wilkinson, McGowan, Davidson, Spiranovic, Bresciano, Cahill, McKay, Jedinak, Leckie, Oar

Netherlands: Cillessen, Martins Indi, De Vrij, Blind, Janmaat, Vlaar, Robben, Sneijder, De Jong, De Guzman, Van Persie

Arjen Robben opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the twentieth minute, but Australia equalized a minute later with a scorcher from Tim Cahill.
2376029_big-lndCahill will miss the next match as a result of the yellow card he picked up just before halftime. His challenge on Bruno Martins Indi resulted in Martins Indi being stretchered off with an unspecified injury. All I know is that he landed very badly- head first- so let’s hope it’s not too serious.

The half ended with the teams level at 1-1. A handball early in the second half resulted in a penalty kick, which was successfully taken by Mile Jedinak. For the next four minutes, Aussie hopes soared. The fans started singing “Advance Australia Fair” in the stands.

And then Robin Van Persie got the equalizer.

Ten minutes later, Memphis Depay put the Netherlands in the lead.

Australia tried to come back- I have to give it to them for their spirit- but Depay’s goal turned out to be the game-winner.

The whistle blew after four minutes of added time: joy and relief for the Oranje; sadness for the Socceroos.

This was perhaps the best match of the WC thus far. I was riveted which didn’t help with my work productivity. I think if Cahill hadn’t have come off they just might have gotten the equalizer.
