World Cup 2014 – Group A Catch-up Post: Mexico vs. Brazil & Croatia vs. Cameroon

21 Jun

Group AHey everyone, Cindy here. I do apologize for the lack of posts about Group A, I just switched jobs last week and this week has been crazy with the switching over and training for the new job and such. Anyways, so a catch up post with what’s happening in Group A after the first two rounds have been played.

Match: Brazil 0 – Mexico 0

Brazil: Julio Cesar; Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo, Paulinho, Gustavo; Ramires, Oscar, Neymar; Fred. <bMexico: Ochoa; Aguilar, Rodriguez, Marquez, Moreno, Layun, Herrera, Vazquez, Guardado; Giovani, Peralta. I am going to take back what I said about Mexico in the Food and Drink post and say that they deserve tequila after all. Just a shot or two, I mean if they managed a win it would be the full bottle, but as it is, they did manage to hold Brazil to a draw and keep their dreams of progressing to the next stage very much alive. I don’t know what Neymar did with his hair, looks like bad boyband frosting.

47% that’s not even a D, a fail! If Xavi were here he’d cry at the ugly level of pass inaccuracy. So yeah, that sums up Fred’s game pretty well, he was so ineffective today, could barely link up with the rest of the game.

medium_b-rK9YkOI_2FB2HrjpXBhZbmBIyE4KfK-MIs5jm03egThe rest of this post will be an ode to Ochoa, Man of the Match, looking spectacular in all blue and wide headband.

Mexico had 8 shots on goal and he saved 6 of them, plus some of them were shots that on any other day, or maybe against another keeper would’ve gone in for sure.

Top class save by Ochoa on Neymar’s header.

Despite ending without a goal, this was the most exciting goal-less match I’ve seen in a long time. There were loads of action at both ends, Ochoa’s spectacular saves were amazing and both teams had the energetic attacking that made every opportunity exciting.

Match: Croatia 4 – Cameroon 0

Croatia:Pletikosa, Srna, Pranjic, Corluka, Lovren, Sammir, Olic, Rakitic, Modric, Perisic, Mandzukic

Cameroon:Itandje, Ekotto, Nkoulou, Chedjou, Mbia, Matip, Song, Eyong, Moukandjo, Aboubaker, Choupo-Moting

Wow, just wow Croatia. They had moments of brilliance against Brazil, but never did the dominate a match like this one against Cameroon. This was totally unexpected from them, and it’s amazing how Cameroon just crumbled under the constant threat of Croatia.

The game started off pretty lively with Croatia making a couple runs, but Cameroon defended well and ball was bounced back in midfield for a while. However in the 10th minute, the ball bounced around in the box before finding Olic just nudged it home low and sweet before anyone could react.

Group A - Cameroon vs CroatiaModric may have broken his nose after being brought down, there was some blood, but he came back on after treatment.

EP-140618912After a couple good chances, especially with Cameroon down to 10 men, Persic scores a clinical strike into the far corner.
AR-140618912And then it’s game over with Mario Mandzukic scoring a brace, first when he rose the highest via an unmarked header and then a hilariously easy tap in from 2 yards out.
EP-140618912Webo’s face really says it all as Cameroon are mathematically eliminated from the tournament.

Once again, sorry for the brief and late post, I’ll have a bits and bobs post up soon too!
