Well, it was kind of a surprising match, and yet a completely un-surprising match at the same time. Argentina had the majority of the possession and chances, which is expected. Iran, who had their only World Cup win on June 21, 1998 against the USA, just dug their heels in for the most part and held on. And boy did they hold on. Argentina only got their one goal of the match from He Who Shall Not Be Named in the 90 + 1’ minute.

Iran, you have my applause! During the first half, I thought Iran played remarkably well. Much better than Argentina for a lot of the first 45 minutes. I’m apparently not alone because sbnation declared that they outplayed Argentina, especially in the first 10 minutes. Not to say Argentina didn’t have some chances that I thought were going to go in. They had quite a few. Including, Garay’s header in the 37th minute that at that point, was the closest they had (and pretty).

Speaking of goals: You Know Who’s stoppage time goal was… wow. Yeah. I liked that.

My commentators were talking during the first half about how apparently You Know Who and some of the older players on the Argentinian team have pressured the Argentinian coach, Sabella, to play 4-4-2 formation. Now, I have no source to back that up. Just stating what the comms said. Also, “older players” doesn’t really include or exclude anybody. Argentina is the oldest team in the World Cup with an average age of 28.6 years old.

Yeah I didn’t like how Argentina played, but the goal was pretty great. About the players pressuring the coach, I heard they decided to ignore what he told them and choose their own formation, that’s the rumor someone told me.

I though Iran deserved a draw, Argentina didn’t play any of their games so far well.
