Are You a Reggae Girl?

3 Aug

The Jamaican women’s soccer team aka the Reggae Girlz has initiated a project on IndieGoGo to raise money in their bid to qualify for the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

In their words:

This is not just an issue about funding a women’s team in Jamaica, this is about EMPOWERING GIRLS and women through sport and into their life in general. Every girl deserves the right to empower themselves through sport no matter the financial implications.

Our first Crowdfunding campaign raised close to $150,000 which helped us raise enough funds to pay for training, nutrition, housing, coaches and gear to get us to the first qualifying rounds in the Dominican Republic where the Reggae Girlz won their rounds 14-0 & 7-0 against St. Lucia and the Dominican Republic.

We now need to keep that high level of training up to get into further rounds and help us achieve our dream and so many girls’ dreams of playing in the Women’s World Cup 2015 in Canada!

The team has partnered with Cedella Marley, the daughter of Bob and Rita Marley, for this fundraising campaign. All money raised will help fund the cost for the girlz to attend the next World Cup qualifying round in Trinidad this August 19 – 26. They are looking to pull together at least another $50,000 to help with costs associated with housing, nutrition, and training. To date, they have raised 57% of their goal.

House of Marley is now matching all donations with $100. So even if you can only contribute $5, that represents an additional $100 for the team. How incredible is that? Plus, for that $5 you will get a copy of the official Reggae Girlz song “Strike Hard” recorded by Cedella, Stephen, and Damian Marley. You know you have to have it. 🙂

August 8 is the quickly approaching deadline for making a contribution. And as you consider whether or not you are a Reggae Girl, just remember the wisdom of Bob Marley: “One Love! One Heart! Let’s get together and feel all right.”
