The Reign of VfL Wolfsburg

17 Aug

2132319_w2VfL Wolfsburg surprised many last year when they beat powerhouse Olympique Lyonnais to win the UEFA Women’s Championship League title. They repeated that triumph this year after a fantastic battle vs Tyresö FF, and becoming the first German football team to successfully defend a Champions League title. To cap the season, Wolfsburg also secured their second consecutive Bundesliga title.

It is no surprise then the three players on the shortlist for the 2013-14 UEFA Women’s Best Player in Europe Award are all members of this championship Wolfsburg squad.

The nominees are:

Nilla Fischer (centre-back, VfL Wolfsburg/SWE)

Nadine Kessler (midfielder, VfL Wolfsburg/GER)

Martina Müller (midfielder, VfL Wolfsburg/GER)

UEFA put together a little video of the nominees here.

The rest of the top ten are as follows:

4 Lena Goessling (GER, VfL Wolfsburg)
5= Verónica Boquete (ESP, Tyresö FF/Portland Thorns)
5= Lotta Schelin (SWE, Olympique Lyonnais)
7= Marta (BRA, Tyresö FF/FC Rosengård)
7= Alexandra Popp (GER, VfL Wolfsburg)
7= Caroline Seger (SWE, Tyresö FF/Paris Saint-Germain)
10 Christen Press (US, Tyresö FF/Chicago Red Stars)

One of my favorite players goalkeeper Nadine Angerer (GER, Frankfurt) took home the inaugural award last year. She beat out another Wolfsburg player midfielder Lena Goeßling and Olympique Lyonnais forward Lotta Schelin.

Final voting will take place August 28 in Monaco during the Champions League group stage draw.
