So, Why Are We All Pouring Ice Water Over Our Heads?

ice-bucket-challenge-slide-v2It’s been accepted by Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcelo, Jerome Boateng, Alexandre Pato, David Luiz, Thiago Silva (who challenged Zlatan), Neymar, Mario Gotze, Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli, Steven Gerrard, Robert Downey Jr, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy), Jennifer Lopez, Mark Sheppard (Doctor Who and Supernatural), and even Lady Gaga just to name a bunch. And George Takei has challenged Neil DeGrasse Tyson, which I’m really looking forward to.

In the month of August the challenge has helped to raise more than double the amount that was donated in August 2013. Social media is completely lit up with our friends, family, sports and entertainment heroes doing the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and I came across the story of how the challenge began.

To anyone who has been affected by ALS, this is a huge deal. We often forget about diseases that aren’t thrust into the spotlight as often as cancer. I’m glad that so many people are getting in on this movement. Even to donate $10 instead of $100 is a big deal when it has reached so many people.

I am originally from the Boston area. When I was being scouted by Boston College during my senior year of high school soccer, it was a huge deal. I grew up surrounded by Red Sox and Patriots fans. So to hear that this entire movement was started by someone in what I consider my community, it hit close to home.

Here’s the story of Pete Frates and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that we all find ourselves taking part in. Also, I’ll be brave enough to post my video here when I do mine…

My mom died from ALS, so I know what a horrible disease it is. Since there is no cure, there is not one chance of getting better so there is no hope and that’s really the worst part. You feel so helpless.
It’s great to see so manny famous people join this initiative.

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. A colleague of mine lost her adult son to ALS and it was heartbreaking to watch the entire family go through his illness.

More athletes have taken the challenge recently (including Messi) and so much money is being raised along with awareness, it can only be a good thing. With money, hopefully, will come progress towards easing ALS patients’ suffering and a cure.
