Preparing For Basel

"I've heard what you've been saying about our defense and I don't appreciate it."

“I’ve heard what you’ve been saying about our defense and I don’t appreciate it.”

Vice capi is looking a tad surly today. That’s pretty much what I looked like after Saturday’s game. No one is happy right now, Sese, no one.

The team finished their last training before meeting Basel tomorrow at home.

Carlo & James did today’s presser.

Ancelotti: “We’ll be competitive in the Champions League and try to win it again”
by Alberto Navarro

“Starting the competition well is important and we want to react against Basel”, he stated.

Carlo Ancelotti appeared before the media in the Ciudad Real Madrid press room. The Italian coach analysed the Champions League opener against Basel: “This match comes just at the right time because it will be good to react. I hope that tomorrow is a good match to do so. I feel like a coach who has to fix things with the team, like last year. Starting this competition well is very important and we are keen to win it again”.

“We are motivated by being competitive in the most important competition in the world and the wonderful memory of last year. We work and fight in order that we may do it again this year. We have a chance because we’re very competitive”.

Champions League results
“I think I’ve trained teams for whom the Champions League is very important. My job is the same as a league manager as it is as a Champions League manager. I have better results in the Champions League but I don’t know why”.

Basel
“They are a very good team who play dynamic football that I like. They are also dynamic in defence and create good chances in attack. The team is dangerous, especially early in the season, as they showed by beating Chelsea in both matches last year”.

“They have started the season very early and are very fit and play naturally. They have a very precise style of football. It won’t be an easy match. We have to do our best to win”.

“I wouldn’t change this squad for any other in Europe.”

“I have a very good, competitive squad. The players feel the same. We can fight for every competition. Everyone is happy to be here because the quality is the best in Europe. We are very happy that James is here. We have every position on the pitch covered”.

The search for balance
“The problem is clear: we need more continuity. The standard of play this year is superior to last year, but we have to do it for 90 minutes. It is, above all, a question of getting used to playing in a certain way. We have to get used to the new players and look for a more natural game. I don’t think it is an attitude problem”.

The squad
“I’m happy with this squad in terms of professionalism. We need maximum focus and we have to look at the finest details of the game. We have analysed what is happening together and we agree that we lack tempo and continuity”.

System
“We lose balance when we have possession. We’ll work to fix that. The system changes according to the characteristics of the players. If the players don’t feel comfortable with a system, I change it. There’s no problem”.

Solutions to set-pieces
“Against Atlético we had problems covering the front post, as we did in the Anoeta. We’re working to cover the front post better, as it is the most dangerous area on set-pieces”.

First-choice keeper
“The debate is over for me. There is no debate in the team and I’m not going to start one. I’ll never speak about the keepers this season. Casillas has experience and character and he is very familiar with this situation and he will get through it without any difficulty. If we play well the fans will be behind us and if we do badly they’ll ask for more. That’s normal. It’s not unusual”.

Satellite (12)James: “We have to play with intensity and start with a win”
by Alberto Navarro

“The match against Basel is a great chance to win and do everything well”, added the Colombian.

James Rodríguez joined Carlo Ancelotti as he spoke to the media just over 24 hours before Real Madrid’s Champions League opener. The midfielder discussed the match against Basel: “We have to play with intensity and start the Champions League with a win. We have a great chance to win and do everything well. This is day by day and match by match. You can’t look back. You have to go out to win”.

“We’ve started badly, but we have the players to get out of this situation. There’s no need to get carried away. We’re just starting. It will be a hard match. They have good players but we have to go out to win, be intense and go out to pressure them. We are the home team and we have to respect that”.

His adaptation to Real Madrid
“It is not yet complete. I’m in a new group and I’m gradually getting better. Every day I get better, physically and mentally. I just want to play and train. I came here as just another player and I want to train well to perform well when I play”.

“I hope to give my all to be with Real Madrid for many years.”

“The Bernabéu is a wonderful stadium, and it is great to play there. I always dreamed of playing here. Since I was a kid it has been something I wanted and now I’m here I want to give my all. I’m also happy to make my Champions League debut”.

Basel’s danger
“We have to be careful with all of them because they have good players and are very dangerous up front”.

No luck against Atlético
“We were unlucky. They didn’t attack much and we had clear chances that we didn’t finish. We have to train and work on it”.

The following players have been called up:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Keylor Navas and Pacheco.
Defenders: Varane, Pepe, Ramos, Coentrão, Marcelo, Arbeloa and Nacho.
Midfielders: Bale, Kroos, James Rodríguez, Modric, Isco and Illarra.
Strikers: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Chicharito.

The mothership produced a promo for the match that was (at least to me) unintentionally hilarious. It shows our players, giant sized, over Madrid landmarks.

My favorite is a shouting Karim over Madrid looking like Godzilla.

Benzilla!

Benzilla!

So maybe that makes this spread armed Sergio Mothra?

Ra-Mothra

Ra-Mothra!

And, of course, we’d need a hero to save Madrid, so here comes Iker flying in like Superman.

"It' a bird! It's a plane! It's Super Capi!"

“It’ a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Super Capi!”

So much for my fevered brain. I just want the team to look cohesive and win tomorrow. Hopefully that’s exactly what will happen.

I had the same thought about Karim looking like Godzilla. Though I think my favorite is Gareth about to bite the Metropolis building
