I was pretty excited when Clermont, in France’s Ligue 2, named a female coach to their first team. It was originally Helena Costa, but she resigned before ever taking the reins in a competitive match. Her reasoning is disappointing (read about here) but she was replaced by another female coach, Corinne Diacre.
On Sunday, Diacre recorded her first win with the club in regular league play. It was a 1-0 win over Le Havre to lift Clermont from the bottom of the table. This win lifted them to 17th in Ligue 2. They have yet to lose a match by more than one goal, however, and their form in the French League cup has been much better and they face Ligue 1’s Caen at the end of next month.
The win means that Diacre has become the first woman to coach a men’s professional team to a league victory. Rock on Corinne!
