Arbeloa: “For a youth academy player like me to have played 200 games for Real Madrid is unimaginable”

“I want to be part of this club for as long as I can. I will always put in the effort and make sacrifices”.

Álvaro Arbeloa has lived the dream of every youth academy player. After six seasons with the club, the Real Madrid defender has featured in 200 games with the team that watched him grow as a player. He expressed his feelings to Realmadrid.com and Realmadrid TV with pride and emotion: “For a youth academy player like me to have played 200 games for Real Madrid is unimaginable and it is something I am very proud of. I came here as a boy and now I am a man with 200 matches to his name”.

“I want to be part of this club for as long as I can. This is home for me. This is the club of my heart and hopefully I have many years ahead here. I have two left as it stands, but it would be an honour to see out my career with Real Madrid. I know that is a very difficult task because of how highly demanding this club is, but that is not a problem for me. I will always put in the effort and make sacrifices on a daily basis in order to win titles.

The Santiago Bernabéu
“This is one of the few grounds there are that amazes you when it’s empty. It is special, but the Champions League nights are even more amazing. Imagine what it is like at full capacity when you are playing a Champions League semi-final with the crowd going wild. The connection we have with the supporters nowadays is special and Champions League nights are always a pleasure for us as we get to relive that feeling. It is emotional for me because I went to the Bernabéu as a fan before I became a player. I watched the matches from the fourth tier and now later in life I am at the centre of things”.

“I am only missing a Club World Cup title with this team where I have won every major trophy.”

“We hope to win the Club World Cup in December so we can then say we have won everything with Real Madrid. This is my sixth season here and there is nothing greater in the world of football than winning with Real Madrid. The Tenth and that 93rd minute will always live in the memory of every Real Madrid fan. The year I came, Zidane scored that wonder goal for the Ninth and 12 years later I was part of the Tenth-winning side. It is hard for people to understand how important it was to win for a team you have watched since you were a kid and witnessed your heroes win the European Cup”.

The demands at Real Madrid
“Five minutes after winning the Tenth people were already talking about the Eleventh. The fans are the first to demand the best of us and they want the club to win more. We are also demanding on ourselves. This season we have aspirations of winning the Club World Cup, another La Liga title, another Copa del Rey and the Eleventh. This is a special club and winning here it is more difficult than anywhere else because of everything that surrounds it and the demanding nature of the supporters”.

An unforgettable team talk
“I have had great managers. From Camacho, my first, to Ancelotti, my current manager. I will never forget the team talk Ancelotti gave us against Bayern in our fourth consecutive year reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League”.

Fondest goal scored
“I’ll pick my goal against Atlético. It was special because it came in a very tough game when it was 1-1, and it was also a beautiful goal. I enjoy every goal I score in this jersey as well as all my teammates’. I am not just a player but was also a fan of this club before I joined”.
