One of our great legends, Gento, turns 81 today. He’s the only player to have won 6(!!!!!!) European Cups. He began his career with Racing Santander staying for one season (1952-1953). He joined Real Madrid the next season where he played from 1953-1971 until his retirement. He also played for Spain and Spain B. After his playing career, he went on to coach.
During his career (in addition to the 6 European Cups, he won an Intercontinental Cup, two Latin Cups, 12 Ligas, two Copa del Reys and one Pequeña Copa del Mundo (Small World Cup). Incredible!
There’s something oddly Pipita-esque in those photos of young Gento, isn’t there?
Feliz cumpleaños, Francisco! Thank you so much for all you did for Real Madrid and the beautiful game. To learn more about Gento, go here and here. He’s made quite a few appearances on this blog and one of my favorite times is when he was joking around with Cris when CR7 joined the list of top 5 all time scorers for the club.
Hala Gento! Hala Madrid!
