Ring Around The G-Bale

The team had their final training before tomorrow’s match vs. Almeria at Juegos Mediterráneos. Sergio, of course, wasn’t called up because he has a one match ban in La Liga. (To match his one game ban in the Champions League. Tsk!)

Real Madrid Castilla players Burgui, Medrán and Alfonso Herrero were included in the training. Sami, James & Lukita continue with their recovery. (Video)

Ancelotti: “2014 has been fantastic and we want to round off our La Liga fixtures with a win”
by Alberto Navarro

“Almería will play with intensity and will be more dangerous because of this week’s change of coach”, added the Real Madrid coach.

Carlo Ancelotti spoke to the media in the Ciudad Real Madrid press room on the eve of his side’s La Liga match against Almería. The Italian coach looked ahead to the Whites’ final league game of the calendar year: “It has been a fantastic year for Real Madrid and we want to round off our La Liga fixtures with a win. With everything the team have done in 2014, I’d give them a high mark out of ten.”

“Almería will play with intensity and will be more dangerous because of this week’s change of coach. Every time a club changes its coach, the players have more responsibility. We’re in good shape at the moment. We didn’t have to put in a huge effort in the Champions League, because we played with an extra man for a while. Everyone is in good condition for tomorrow.”

Praise for Marcelo
“Brasil didn’t have a good World Cup, but I don’t think it was because of Marcelo. The team in general didn’t play well. Since the World Cup, Marcelo has been the best full-back in the world without a doubt. We are happy if he doesn’t join up with his national team and stays here.”

Modric’s recovery
“He has only done physiotherapy and the muscle is healing well. We’re happy with his progress and tomorrow he will have a scan, and another at the end of the year. He is making very good progress. Everything has gone well so far.”

Francisco’s departure as Almería coach
“It surprises me but also doesn’t surprise me. Every time there is a change of coach, it saddens me because I know how difficult this job is. But that’s football. He won’t be the first or the last. That’s what our professional life is like. It’s easier to part company with a coach than the whole squad.”

“Coaching this team is the source of pride, not the record.”

“The record is important, because it says that we’re doing very well. It hasn’t brought us any silverware, but it has given us a lot of confidence. It tells us the work we have to do to do well on the pitch. Coaching this team is the source of pride, not the record.”

James’s fitness
“He had a small problem and we want to get him back for the last match of the Club World Cup. He started work today and we’re looking for him to join the group next Thursday.”

Illarra and Kroos in midfield
“Illarra can play on his own or in the centre with Kroos, but we don’t need to change Kroos’s position or Illarra’s, further wide defensively, because they’re doing very well.”

Chicharito’s situation
“When a striker gets an opportunity, he wants to do everything he can and score. I’ve never asked to him to score goals, but to work hard and help the team. Everyone can assess what he does on the pitch. You have to assess the work he does in training.”

“It’s important to have players who train flat out even if they don’t play, like him or Nacho. That’s a sign of great professionalism and I value him for that. I would like to give him more playing time because he deserves it for the way he works, but he knows that at Real Madrid there is a lot of competition up front.”

Club World Cup
“We’re analysing the opponents. It started yesterday and on Saturday the two teams who are our possible semi-final rivals will play. We’re analysing everything.”

Khedira to travel to Morocco
“He’ll travel to Morocco, because on Monday he’ll have the medical all-clear. I don’t think he’ll be available for the semi-final, but he will be available for the last game in Morocco.”

Champions League last-16 draw
“The opponents are more competitive than last year. There are teams such as Manchester City, Leverkusen, Juventus, Shakhtar or PSG, who are very competitive. Last year, all of the group winners got through the last 16, but this year I think it’s going to be different.”

Less playing time for Carvajal in the Champions League
“That hasn’t been because of rotations with that intention. The fact that he hasn’t played doesn’t mean that he won’t in the last 16.”

January transfer window
“Nothing has changed from last week. We’re going to evaluate properly the recoveries of the players who are injured and after Christmas we’ll assess whether or not we have to be active in the January transfer window. Medrán is a very good option because he has quality and he is a product of the youth set-up.”

Mijatovic’s attendance at training
“He’s a friend of mine and of Real Madrid and he is part of the history of this club. The doors at Valdebebas are always open to people who make history at this club.”

BTW, he’s referencing Predrag Mijatović who was with Real Madrid both as a player (1996-1999) and as Director of Football (2006-2009).

The following players were called up:

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Keylor Navas and Pacheco.
Defenders: Varane, Pepe, Coentrão, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Carvajal and Nacho.
Midfielders: Kroos, Bale, Isco, Illarra and Medrán.
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Jesé, Benzema and Chicharito.

Next Training Session
Saturday at 12:00pm CET at Ciudad Real Madrid.

Here’s a few closeup pictures from the lunch yesterday via GF Sports:

I must say, Iker is looking very lovely in that mustard colored sweater. It really suits him!  As does Fabio’s blue one. I see that Illarra is working his best “Xabi goes to Coachella” vibe. (There is never a bad time to visit Hola Querida. Never.)

The ever charming Marcus Slaughter shared some shots of his own.

I feel like Keylor didn’t get the “try to look nice” memo. Other than that, I think all of the boys look rather dashing. Even the oft challenged Pony.
