The Ballon d’Or Is Upon Us

12 Jan

B7J4vjSIMAAEyHHThis is a quick pre Ballon d’Or drive-by, as Lozil is working from home (get better soon, girl!) and I’m starting classes again this week.

Cristiano posted the above photo on his way to Zurich in order to (hopefully) win his third Golden Ball. He is, of course, up against Lionel Messi and Manuel Neuer for this year’s award. All of them had fabulous seasons so we’ll see what happens, I suppose.

He is joined at the gala by a few of our other boys and our Mister. Sergio also posted a photo on the way.

We have 12 players nominated for FIFA FIFPro World XI 2014. Casillas, Carvajal, Marcelo, Pepe, Ramos, Varane, Kroos, Modric, James, Bale, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo are among the 55 candidates in the running for a place in team that will be announced during the Ballon d’or gala. And Ancelotti is nominated as Coach of the Year.

James is also nominated for the Puskas Award for goal of the year against Robin Van Persie and Stephanie Roche. The mothership posted this video to show off James’ World Cup stunner.

You can watch all of the nominees here. I’m, honestly, pulling for Stephanie Roche on this one!

FIFA is also preparing for the ceremony by posting videos and photos from the lead up events.

The nominees for Women’s Player of the Year are Nadine Kessler, Marta, and Abby Wambach. My personal opinion, despite always pulling for Abby, is that it’s Nadine’s year. She was absolutely incredible this year.

The press conference just ended and I’ll update with photos from that soon. The red carpet festivities start at 5pm CET/11am EST and the ceremony itself starts at 6:30pm CET/12:30pm EST. You can watch both at FIFA.com or (in the US) Fox Sports 2 or Fox Deportes.

Very happy for James and Cris! And apparently Cris won in a total landslide, too!

Also, that coat of Sergio’s is GLORIOUS.
