Ladies and Gentlemen: I give to you the first upset of the Women’s World Cup 2015!

That’s right with goals from both Usme and Andrade, Colombia dealt France a three point blow. Prior to this match, there was much talk about France advancing to the next round. Now? France and England are tied with three points each while Colombia leads the group with four points. Now, if you read my Colombia versus Mexico match report you’ll remember that Colombia made history with their first ever goal in that match. So, congrats to Colombia with their first ever WC win! (And maybe now they’ll get more than just the 1% of the men’s salary.)

Sepulveda makes a save

While France dominated both the possession stats (60%) and had approximately 7x as many shots (21 vs 3) than Colombia, Colombia came out with the win. Goes to show possession doesn’t always matter! Most match reviews say that while France dominated the first half, they lacked in true scoring opportunities.

Lady Andrade celebrates her goal

According to a Fox Sports article the victory was not without controversy. There was a handball by Colombia that should have been a penalty but was not called by the referee, Qin Liang. There were also a few other tackles that were apparently red card worthy but either not called, or didn’t result in a card.
