Preseason Match Recap: Audi Cup – Real Madrid v Tottenham

4 Aug

Bale v Tottenham

We faced Bale and Modric’s former team today in the semi finals of the Audi Cup. We did so without both Cristiano and Benzema who picked up minor injuries.

It seems like it’s been a hectic pre-season. We’ve bounced all over the place and taken a few wins along the way.

Lineups:

Real Madrid: Kiko Casilla; Danilo, Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane, Marcelo; Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Isco; James Rodriguez, Jese, Gareth Bale

Starters

Tottenham: Michel Vorm; Kyle Walker, Toby Alderweireld, Kevin Wimmer, Danny Rose; Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier; Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Eric Lamela; Harry Kane

Tottenham took early control of the match. We got away with one in the third when Lamela somehow put a cross from Rose high and wide. He really shouldn’t have missed, so we got lucky.

After that, however, our boys seemed to wake up. Jese smashed the crossbar from a wonderful shot in the 6th minute. Then Jese forced Vorm to make a fabulous save in the 8th minute.

The referee was having to get a lot more involved than I think anyone would have liked, given it’s only preseason. Those tackles in pre-season and early on in the regular season seem a bit more nerve wracking than they do later in the season. Not a LOT more nerve wracking, but just a little.

It seemed like Gareth was having a bit of a time. I’m not convinced he can play well in the role that Benitez put him in for this match. I had a conversation with a friend about how Garebear needs to get much better working the ball in tight spaces before he can be good in that number 10 role. But if he’s putting the effort in, I’m not going to bitch.

And Spurs can be excited about Alli, no? He showed some promise. If he keeps it up, I’m sure we’ll be hearing rumors about stealing him the same way we’re hearing rumors about stealing Kane. Speaking of Kane, he was a bit isolated at the top and Spurs weren’t able to get him on the ball. I like that.

Garebear (I’m really hoping that by bringing back the nickname he will shave that stupid fuzz on his face) had a chance in the 30th minute, finally. James put in a great freekick but Bale’s header was just wide of the post.

Vorm showed some cat-like reflexes in the 35th minute for Tottenham when Modric took a shot and had it deflected. Vorm was moving to his left and had to scramble as the deflection moved right. He was just able to get to it and push it clear. It really was great goalkeeping.

Lucky for us, just a minute later James got his head on the ball and showed that he’s capable of scoring more than just those stunning freekicks of his. It’s too bad he was just bought to sell shirts, huh?

After one minute of added time, the half ended Real Madrid 1-0 Tottenham.

Second Half:

Benitez brought in Casemiro and Vasquez for Kroos and James at the half. And Tottenham’s changes were to replace Lamela, Wimmer, and Dier with Nasir “I-Look-Amazing-With-My-Shirt-Off” Chadli, Bentaleb, and Vertonghen.

Tottenham earned a corner in the 53rd minute that our new capitan, and resident pony, headed away clear. We love Ramos head!

*ahem*

Capitan Pony earned himself a yellow card in the 56th minute for a challenge on Eriksen. I heard a commentator refer to it as “tasty.” Um… Sure.

In the 59th minute we got more subs. Arbeloa and Dennis “I-Run-Like-A-Fucking-Gazelle” Cheryshev replaced Marcelo and Jese. Then we got to see some Illarra in for Modric.

We put in Asensio and Nacho for Isco and Ramos in the 68th minute while Tottenham also made subs. Carroll and Winks replaced Eriksen and Alli.

Tottenham started to push forward a bit more following their changes and were doing well with possession near the area. But they couldn’t make anything happen. Mostly because we were keeping our defense compact. Yet another defensive manager for us.

In the 80th minute we got a Bale goal!!

He hit the ball from long range and it seemed to take a funny hop in front of Vorm, who just missed it. Look, I don’t care how we score. I only care that we do score!

Okay, I’d be embarrassed by any kind of “Hand of God” incidents but Kaka once scored with his butt. I’m not picky!

In the 83rd minute, Bale was replaced by Mayoral. And in the 86th minute one of our new boys, Vasquez, curled a shot just over the bar. I love when the new/young boys want to show the manager what they’ve got. It makes for some fun footie!

In the 87th minute Kane, who had essentially disappeared for the match, was replaced by Onomah. And with one added minute at the end, we had ourselves a win.

Benitez post match

FROM REALMADRID.COM

“The changes are made to manage the squad in the best way possible”, he noted.

Rafa Benítez assessed the Audi Cup semi-final, which ended with a Real Madrid win over Tottenham: “The team are very good and compact in defence. It’s still early days because so far we have only been in Australia, China and now here. But for the moment I’m happy with the balance of the team”.

“Whatever we did today was down to the type of tournament this is. It’s very difficult to manage two games in two days at this stage of the season. The changes were not reflective of anything other than finding a way to best manage the squad. Kroos will be a very important player because he possesses so much quality”.

Isco
“My opinion about Isco hasn’t changed because I already had a good idea about him. His performances reaffirm what we already knew about him, that he’s a great player, like many of the others we have in our squad”.

“The forward players have the freedom to move around and switch positions. We are trying to make the most of Cristiano, Benzema, Bale, Jesé… Bale knows what he has to do and now we are working on improving the team’s physicality, which in turn will result in him improving in terms of finding the target”.

The young players
“Rubén Yáñez will be one of the goalkeepers because Pacheco is going out on loan. Marcos Llorente will be working with us and could play for the reserves. We will have to evaluate Mayoral, Asensio and Odegaard and decide what to do with them. They are talented and possess quality and we have to decide what is best for them and their futures”.

Benzema
“As I said before, Karim is going to stay here. I don’t like to speculate about players’ futures. I talk about football, not about other things”.

Bale post match

Bale: “I hope to repay all the confidence with titles”
by Javier Garcia (Munich) | Photographer: Ángel Martinez

“We need to continue like this until La Liga starts”, said Lucas Vázquez.

Bale started the match against Tottenham Hotspur and scored the goal that wrapped up Real Madrid’s passage to the final of the Audi Cup. After the match, the Welshman stated: “It’s great having everyone believe in you and I hope to repay that trust by winning titles. I can play out on the left, the right and can also do a job in the middle. I feel comfortable in that position”.

His team-mate Lucas Vázquez came on for the second half and assessed the teams performance: “We have to continue like this until the start of La Liga. We are growing in confidence. We want to take it one step at a time in order to lift as many titles as possible and we working towards doing that. The final is tomorrow and we are very eager to win it”.

Preparation
“What matters most at the moment is getting in shape and making the most of the minutes you’re given to give it your all and help the team out however you can. Benítez’s training sessions are high in intensity and he knows what he wants from us. We need to do what he asks of us in order to do as well as we can”.

Signing
“A call from Real Madrid is always a surprise. I’m very happy to be here. Real Madrid is the best team in the world and it’s an honour to be here. Being able to play alongside the best players in the world helps you become a better player. Training with them is like doing a PhD in football”.

We face Bayern Munich in the final of the Audi Cup tomorrow. I dread meeting them for a number of reasons. But damn there’s a lot of pretty! I will promptly be ignoring anything having to do with the man I used to call my “Precious Ginger Beard.” But not really….

¡HALA MADRID!
