Ramos: “Being the Real Madrid captain is an honour and a privilege”

“He is a Real Madrid symbol, this club is his home and is where he will continue to make history”, explained Florentino Pérez.

The Santiago Bernabéu’s presidential box was the setting for Sergio Ramos contract renewal event. During the ceremony, the defender expressed his delight about being able to further build on his legendary status as a Real Madrid player: “Being part of this club is a dream that I would like to last for as long as possible. Playing for the greatest club in the world and wearing the captain’s armband is an honour and a privilege, but it also entails a level of commitment and responsibility that I will continue to approach with excitement, sincerity and honesty”.

“This was a drawn-out renewal process but my head and my heart were always here. I couldn’t be happier and as I always say, Hala Madrid!”.

Incentives to stay on
“My life has been divided between my childhood, the years I spent with Sevilla and my time with Real Madrid. That was enough motivation to opt for the greatest institution in the world. Another consideration was the happiness of my loved ones. I never said that I wanted to leave. It was always my intention to stay here and my dream is to be able to retire with Real Madrid. I now have a new challenge ahead which is captaining the team, and I’ll take on this role with the upmost honesty. I hope to repay this joy to the supporters by winning titles”.

Captaining style
“We all have our own way of doing things, but I’ve always had fantastic teachers to look up to at Sevilla and here. I’ve tried to pick the best bits of each one in order to carry out my role as best I can. Being the captain requires a tremendous amount of responsibility and I believe that moment has come for me. Fingers crossed I will be spoken of as a great captain and a Real Madrid legend, just like other players who have walked through these doors”.

“It was always my intention to stay here and my dream is to be able to retire with Real Madrid. ”

“I believe that a captain must lead by example in all aspects. This is the best team in the world and we have to try and make whoever joins us feel identified with the crest and with what we represent. We have to give it our all on the pitch. We want the fans to go home happy because their players have given it everything. We also have to fight hard to win titles. The dressing room is full of different cultures and customs, but we all need to pull in the same direction”.

The Real Madrid spirit
“I’ve given everything for this crest over the course of my career and the fans know I’ll continue to do so. We already know how demanding this club is, but I’m prepared to accept this risk, to try and win more titles and to keep the Real Madrid supporters happy”.

Relationship with the fans
“I hope they show me the same level of affection they have always shown me. I have never felt unloved here. We’re always subject to the performances expected of us, but every Real Madrid player has to live with that challenge and show complete commitment. I’ve always felt really loved in the Bernabéu and I think that will continue to be the case”.

“It’s true that I wasn’t comfortable with certain things but that has all been cleared up and I’m excited now to lead this team. Had it come down to financial reasons I wouldn’t have stayed, because I could have earned more elsewhere. The differences have been resolved, and if there is anyone I need to thank for this, it is the president. In a sporting sense I love him like a father and I think he loves me like a son. I am happy here so there was no use wasting time somewhere else”.

Florentino Pérez: “Real Madrid and Ramos, united forever”
The Real Madrid president showed his satisfaction regarding the deal: “Today is a huge day for this club. Real Madrid announces, with great satisfaction, that Ramos will remain with us for five more years. He is a Real Madrid symbol, having won the fans over through his dedication, quality, personality and enormous heart on and off the pitch. With that in mind, Real Madrid and Ramos will stay united forever”.

“The Real Madrid spirit has a level of expectation and a code of values that he bought into on his very first day here. Since joining, his bond with Real Madrid has been so strong that he has become a legend. This club is his home and where he will continue to make history”.

“It is very important that a player like him can continue to lead the young players who join this club by example. He not only symbolises la Décima and a never-say-die attitude, but also nobility and love for Real Madrid. He will wear the captain’s armband this season, something I am certain he will do with honour and pride, just as Casillas did”.

“As the president, I feel immense pride for everything you have achieved and we know that a new, exciting period is now getting underway, this time with you as the captain. We need you more now than ever and you should know that we will always be by your side”.

The event, which was also attended by Rafa Benítez, concluded with the defender posing for a photo with his family and Florentino Pérez.

The mothership put together a highlight reel of The Ramos. Sadly, not of his fashion exploits.

Ramos: “I feel proud that I will end my sporting career at Real Madrid”

“Extending my contract is a dream come true and a commitment as I will be the team captain”, he added.

Sergio Ramos spoke to Realmadrid TV and following his contract extension with the club until 2020. The defender spoke about his new era as a Madrid player: “It is a challenge and I am really excited about tackling the final stage of my contract with Real Madrid. You cannot ask more from life; five years to win the maximum number of titles possible and the chance for me to lift them after being here for so long”.

What is going through Sergio Ramos’ head on the day you extended your contract?
It is a unique day, full of excitement and emotion, for me and my family too. After ten years of very positive memories, on both a personal and professional level, being in the capital for a period in my life and at the best club in the world, it is a dream come true to extend my contract, as well as a commitment as I will have to captain the side. It is a challenge and a new dream that I hope to undertake in the best way possible.

How do you remember your arrival at the club?
It was a very important step in my life. I was player who was practically coming from a small town after spending a really great period of my youth in Seville. Arriving at the best club in the world at such a young age, and being practically unknown in the world of football was a tremendous amount of pressure. I remember the first day I went out on the pitch at the Bernabéu, really excited and wanting to conquer the world. You should not forget the effort and sacrifice that made you into an elite player and especially being at Real Madrid. This club instils values that educate you on a personal and professional level. I feel proud to have had the best club in the world as a teacher.

In what way have you changed since your arrival?
In terms of experience and maturity that you gain with time, over the years, and from playing with highly experienced players, who you take the best attributes from. Playing, playing and playing some more makes you different and want to keep improving so that you can play at the top level. The effort has its rewards and I feel proud to have collected all the fruits of that labour.

You have given everything for the Real Madrid shirt, what do you feel when you put it on?
The club has values and a history that anyone who puts on the shirt should bear in mind above anything else. Sevillian blood as well as Real Madrid flows through my entire being and my heart. They have been two great periods of my life and when you put on the shirt you have to give absolutely everything for the badge. In that sense I have always really identified with the values of the club: work, perseverance, sacrifice, not throwing in the towel until the last minute. Those values go with the shirt and people should always know that when they wear the Real Madrid badge.

What does it mean for you to be the team captain?
A lot of good things. Throughout my career I have had captains from whom I have tried to learn the best I could. They have been good examples for me and I will try to be like that for others. Team mates need the support of the captain and your affection at certain times. A captain instils a series of values in players who need that and above all, is an example for team mates, players and children in the street. It is a challenge and I am really excited about tackling the final stage of my contract with Real Madrid. You cannot ask more from life; five years to win the maximum number of titles possible and the chance for me to lift them after being here for so long.

How would you define yourself?
When I go out on the pitch I try to perform at my highest level. We are people, not machines and we can have games that are better or worse than others, but above all you have you have to keep calm and hold your head high. You have to try, and fight, so that there are never any excuses, which is what people can criticise you for. In that regard, I have always gone home with a clear conscience. If there is something that defines Madrid fans and our badge, it is honour, sacrifice, sharpness, perseverance and effort, if you show those attributes on the pitch here, people value you.

Apart from those characteristics, you also like and are good at joining the attack…
It is really nice, because as I am a defender, goals are enjoyed in a different way. This attribute is linked to me because I have been lucky and have the ability to score goals, also in very important games. I hope that in the five years I have left there will be the odd goal from Sergio Ramos. It is a different source of joy.

When you hear 92 minutes and 48 seconds, what comes into your head
It is really clear, Lisbon, the Champions League, effort, sacrifice, union, team work. It was the best moment in my sporting career, due to the circumstances of the game, and Real Madrid is identified with sacrifice, effort and never surrendering until the last second. There I was and finally we took home La Décima.

Was it a dream to win La Décima?
I think that the Champions League was in debt to me following the penalty against Bayern or the day against Dortmund, that we were about to go through to the final. I think that you achieve things, dreams and hopes with sacrifice and effort. The Champions owed me something and certainly gave it to me.

How do you maintain the competitive level over such a long time?
You have to be thankful for the team work. You do not shine if the group is not good. The team is crucial to standing out on an individual level faced with the rest of world football. Five years in the FIFA Fifpro World XI is a reward for the work and effort. It is another award, less important because I prefer team awards but it is always very agreeable.

What is Rafa Benítez like to judge from what you have seen during the preseason?
He is a highly-skilled manager, with a lot of football knowledge and experience. He has won things with practically all of the teams he has been at, and in that sense in he gets the most out of players. He is very demanding and can contribute a lot of good things to the side. I hope that with Benítez we can begin a really good period with titles at Real Madrid.

As the Real Madrid captain, what do you have to say to Madrid fans and what are the aims?
Real Madrid always has to fight for every title. I feel proud that I will end my sporting and professional career at Real Madrid. It is a commitment and a really big responsibility, but I also think that it is really nice. I hope that we can win lots of titles this year because it would be a sign that the work has been done well, and that we are getting back to where we want to be, which is celebrating in Cibeles.

Sergio, being the good captain, took off that suit and got right back to work training with the team. (Video)

The Baby & Fabio finally joined the rest of the team for training. Benz & Pepe are still working on their recovery.

Tomorrow we face Galatasaray in the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy.

Hooray! I don’t know if I could bear up under having his tacktasticness playing for someone else.

    Shit, what an attractive family!
A big HURRAY! of course, but am I the only one who is maybe holding a tiny bit of bitterness in the bottom of my heart toward Sergio? I love him and all he’s done for us no doubt, but that whole transfer saga and him trying to force a move for more $$(if that was even the case, idk) has left me a weeeee bit skeptical of his captaincy, not to mention he IS Red Card King. He’s always been our pillar of motivation and spirit, but full time captaincy needs a maturity and calmness….an Ikerness or Raulness, you could say, lol.
Sigh, I dunno, maybe I just still haven’t accepted Iker is being replaced.

I doubt trying to force more money was actually a thing. We know that’s not worked in the past (Ozil/Di Maria…).

I think for the cards, he’s been much more mature over the past couple of years. He’s a bit less mouthy, but still makes that occasional dirty tackle. I do worry that when thinks get niggly (like against Barca or Atleti) he won’t be able to control our players. But I think otherwise, it will be okay.

I would have negotiated an exit scenario into the contract, such as, RM will throw a big celebration, honor me in public, air a video of my greatest moments, and speak highly of me in front of a full house Bernabeu, and give me a big fat exit bonus.

I don’t worry about him losing his cool either at pivotal moments. He won’t have the calm of Iker, no one has that, but he will have a big presence in the big games.

I am glad that whole transfer rumor mess is over, but I do miss those days when Sergio wasn’t as domesticated as a house cat.
