Castilla’s Marcos Llorente and Borja Mayoral joined the first team along with Varane (a very good sign indeed!). Sergio, Danilo, James & Gareth continued their recovery work.

“Granada are very quick and can hurt us if we are not focused”, added the manager.

Rafa Benítez gave a press conference at Ciudad Real Madrid, one day ahead of the league game against Granada. The manager analysed the match against the Andalusian side: “We have a side with quality to make up for the injuries. Nothing has been decided as to the starting eleven. We work with everyone and that is the strength we must have. Everyone must feel that they can participate. Depending on the players we have available we will use one system or another”.

“Granada are very quick, they are physical in attack and are well trained tactically. They are quick on the wings, we must be attentive to their counterattacking and they can hurt us if we are not focused. If we do things well, it will be difficult for them to withstand 90 minutes without us scoring”.

Competitiveness is key aspect
“This is a squad that has had a sensational outlook since day one. Their competitiveness is one of the things that has been most pleasing and that is the key aspect. Their mentality and attitude mean that the team respond when they are pushed”.

“We do not have too many injured players, just those of a large team that plays a lot of games and at a very high level. We played against strong teams during the preseason and we have begun the season with intensity. There have also been international games and two players got injured when away on international duty. We are within the figures”.

Bale and his injury
“It is a little injury, it is not serious and our experience makes us optimistic because he recovered well last time. If a player is fit and goes away to play with his national squad, there is little you can do. Those managers have their aims and we have our won, and now that is for him to recover as soon as possible”.

“Managing to improve on 113 years of history means that the team and Navas are performing really well.”

“Navas is sensational, like all of the team who have helped him out. He played a crucial role by making big saves and I am happy for him and for the team. Beating a record at Real Madrid is an extremely difficult feat”.

The semi-final of the EuroBasket between Spain and France
“I saw a little of the game and send my congratulations to everyone: the players, managers and all of Spain. I hope that they can finish the job in the final. There is no doubt that Cristiano Ronaldo is our Gasol. What I want is what we saw yesterday: for our player, Cristiano Ronaldo, to be the most important, and help the team win titles. Spain reached the final because they played very well as a team and one player made the difference. That is what I am looking for”.

“I talk to Cristiano Ronaldo every day and have as well today, about tactical matters. He has complete freedom to move up the pitch and coordinate his movements with teammates, provided that the team is balanced at the back”.

More balance with four midfielders
“I view the question from the perspective of tactical analysis and not from that of results. Balancing a team that does not concede goals and which has attacking prowess, is difficult. Bale’s injury allows me to work with other alternatives such a putting a player out on the wing and Cristiano Ronaldo more towards the centre”.

Aspects to be improved
“The team is balanced because we are not conceding goals and are strong in attack, but you can always aim to reduce attacks from opponents and further increase our own”.

“I have not decided who will play. He is fit, but our only aim is to win the game against Granada. We have a sufficient performance level to have guarantees going into any game. I am not too worried. We have to find a team that can beat Granada and then we will look for one to do it against Athletic”.

“He is a player that I knew well from the Italian league. He has quality and is dynamic. In the last game we had problems in play between different areas of the pitch so that is why he played there. He is a quality player that will help us out in the transition phase between defence and attack. Any of the midfielders can be changed around”.

“I know how important he was for the side last year and how difficult it was for him to withstand the whole season. I want to measure out his playing time carefully, as well as that of Modric. They are players that can make the key difference and rotations will be changes in positions depending precisely on that factor. He is an extremely important player for us”.

Gerrard’s declarations
“Now is not the right time, but I said that he is a phenomenon and that we should forget about that matter. My relationship with him is good if he wants it to be. I had some fantastic years with him”.

The following players were called up for the match:

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla and Rubén Yáñez.
Defenders: Varane, Pepe, Nacho, Marcelo, Carvajal and Arbeloa.
Midfielders: Kroos, Casemiro, Kovacic, Modric, Cheryshev and Isco.
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Jesé and Lucas Vázquez.

Uosama and his two sons visited Ciudad Real Madrid where they met Rafa Benítez and the players before training.

Uosama Alabed Almohsen and his children Zied and Mohammad had another incredible experience following their visit to the Santiago Bernabéu on Thursday afternoon. The father of the Syrian family, who was tripped up by a Hungarian journalist, along with his sons, met Rafa Benítez, the coaching staff and the squad, minutes prior to the final session ahead of the game against Granada. Little Zied got to meet his hero, Cristiano Ronaldo, and take a photo with him on the training pitch.

Saturday’s clash against Granada will be special for the three family members as they will be in the stadium to watch it, at the invitation of the Real Madrid president. From the very beginning Real Madrid has leant its support to the refugees who have been taken in by Spain and, to this end, on 5 September the club announced its plan to donate one million euros towards this cause.

Are you ready for some football? I know I am! HALA MADRID!
