I had to work on Saturday and missed the match. I was super excited as my phone continued going off with updates.
I did watch it later, however. And I was still very excited. Celta Vigo have been a very tough side so far this season. I was slightly worried.
Celta de Vigo: Sergio Alvarez; Hugo Mallo, Gustavo Cabral, Sergi Gomez, Jonny; Augusto Fernandez, Pablo Hernandez, Daniel Wass; Fabian Orellana, Iago Aspas, Nolito
Real Madrid: Keylor Navas; Danilo, Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos, Marcelo; Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Luka Modric; Jese Rodriguez, Cristiano Ronaldo, Lucas Vasquez
My fears weren’t too prominent as we really did dominate the match from the start.
Then we got on the board pretty quickly when Cris put a low Vazquez cross into the net with a lot of fervor. It was the 8th minute and it made even harder to find reason not to like Vazquez. Not that I’m trying, but you know… Figure of speech and stuff.
Celta had a stunning chance in the 18th minute that drew an equally stunning save from our one-and-only Keylor Navas. He did it again in the 20th minute off a strike from Orellana. It was absolutely amazing goalkeeping.
Then Danilo scored a great one for our second goal in the 24th minute. It was a great pass across the top of the box by Jese and excellent control from Danilo.
Then in the 26th minute Navas had to pull out another great save to keep us up by two.
In the 32nd minute, Vazquez collided with Hernandez and gave away a freekick. As Wass drove it to the far corner, Navas was down AGAIN to make an excellent save AGAIN. Freaking Superman!
The first yellow card came in the 37th minute to Cabral for a tackle on Marcelo.
Navas to the rescue again in the 40th minute. This time it was Aspas who hit a powerful strike on goal. Then in the 43rd he kept out a header from Hernandez that was surely going in! Crazy love for that man!
After one minute of added time the half was over and it was Celta Vigo 0 – 2 Real Madrid.
There were no changes at the half as Celta Vigo kicked it off.
Vazquez picked up a yellow in the 53rd minute when he took down Jonny. And in the 57th minute, Hernandez picked up a yellow for pulling back Sergio. Then Cabral picked up his second yellow for his reaction to it and was sent off. Aspas then picked up a yellow for protesting. Sergio also should have been carded for the scuffle he had with Aspas after, but he wasn’t.
Vazquez was chopped down in the 60th minute and Aspas then got in his face as Nolito was booked for it.
In the 62nd inute, Isco replaced Vazquez.
In the 68th minute, Wass was replaced by Radoja for Celta Vigo. And Denis(!) replaced Jese in the 71st minute.
In the 73rd minute, Marcelo had to clear the ball off the line to keep us ahead by two!
We had a bit of a scare in the 76th minute, when Keylor came out against Aspas. He made a great stop on Aspas, who was surely in, but got a kick to the stomach for his trouble. Luckily he stood up and was okay.
We made our last change in the 80th minute when Nacho replaced Modric. Shortly after, Celta Vigo made a change with Guidetti replacing Hernandez who was on a yellow. Their next sub was in the 84th minute. Planas replaced Orellana.
In the 85th minute, Nolito scored for Celta. And what a strike! He is absolutely fabulous. He actually has similar stats to Ronaldo this season. Crazy for a relatively unknown player at a tiny, and underestimated, club like Celta Vigo.
Also, does Nolito look like a not as angry younger brother of Diego Simeone to anyone else?
There were 5 minutes of added time. And in it was in the 6th extra minute that Marcelo found the net with a shot from close.
The match was finally done after 7 minutes of added time. Celta de Vigo 1 – 3 Real Madrid.
Benitez: “We won at a difficult ground and we have to be satisfied”
by Javier Garcia | Photographer: Helios De La Rubia“We suffered at the end because we needed to have scored the third goal earlier on”, stated the manager of the Whites.
The Real Madrid manager, Rafa Benítez, spoke in the press room at Balaídos following the Whites’ win against Celta: “We won at a difficult ground and we have to be satisfied with that. We had a great game against PSG and today we had lots of chances to decide the game sooner. In the end we struggled a bit because we needed to score the third goal earlier”.
“The result is what I am most pleased about. What I am least pleased about is the fact that we had to work hard to get the three points following the game on Wednesday, with little time between matches and at a difficult ground. Kovacic did not play because other players did”.
Similar scenario to that of Paris
“These games, with the injuries we have, have allowed us to really value the squad we have. We have continued to win using other players and that is really positive. We have strengthened a group that knows that games are won by keeping up the fight, working, creating chances and defending well”.
“The best aspect was the team. They scored three goals, created a lot of chances and, following the game on Wednesday, we had great match at a ground where big sides have lost and we were able to keep fighting. You have to take away the positive aspects and analyse what did not go well in order to then correct it”.
“This was an attractive game of football due to the high number of chances. Celta are a side with a lot of conviction, the ability to unbalance teams, and quality. They are a side that look destined to be near the top of the table for many matchdays to come”.
“We played two and a half days after the last game. It was a surprise to have to play on Saturday following the game on Wednesday. I am convinced that other weeks, other sides will be given this same small amount of recovery time. We showed quality, character and I am satisfied”.
Casemiro: “The team deserve credit for getting this win”
by Javier Garcia (Vigo) | Photographer: Helios De La Rubia“We had to dig in but we got the three points won, which is the main thing”, said Lucas Vázquez.
Casemiro analysed Real Madrid’s win over Celta at Balaídos: “We knew that it was going to be a difficult game, because they’re strong at home. The team deserve credit for getting this win. We were tired because we’d played a tough match on Wednesday and this is a hard place to come to, and we were up against a good side who I’m sure will be up there in the table. Hopefully we can win every time out, and can stay unbeaten and top of the league”.
“We put in a great first-half performance, and in the second we lacked the ability to kill off the game until Marcelo’s goal. It’s normal for the home fans to create a pressure-cooker atmosphere and for Celta to put the pressure on too. Now we have to carry on working hard. Since I returned to the club, the backroom team have given me a lot of confidence and that’s important for me. I want to keep on working hard to ensure I’m here for a long time to come”.
Lucas Vázquez: “The team are in good form”
“We have to be happy with the win. We found life difficult at the end because of the match we played on Wednesday. It meant that we were more tired, but that’s something we just had to get on and deal with. You also have to give Celta credit. They looked to put us under pressure right to the end on their own ground and we had to dig in, but we got the three points won, which is the main thing. The team are in good form and we have to keep it up”.
“The team always play on the attack, we had more than 20 attempts on goal and we’ve won the game 3-1. There’s nothing defensive about us. In the first half the team put in a really good display, carving out openings up front and doing well at the back, and that’s what we have to come away with”.
“I try to perform as well as I can and I’m grateful to the coach for the opportunity. Playing for Real Madrid is a real source of pride, you have to give everything in every game and I’m happy about getting playing time. Playing back in Galicia was special for me, it’s an added source of motivation”.
“He’s in spectacular form, he’s showing that in every game. We’re really happy for him and hopefully he can keep this up for a long time”.
Jesé: “We’ve won and we stay top”
“It’s a really important win, because today was a diffcult match against a really good side. We’re very happy. I was expecting a really tough match, harder even than Wednesday’s because of our exertions in that game. We’ve just kept at it without thinking about the others. What’s important is that we’ve won and we stay top”.
“I’m very happy. I always try to make the most of the playing time the coach gives me, and I feel good and I have to carry on like this. I’ve always wanted to be at Real Madrid and be a success”.
“He’s incredible, a fantastic goalkeeper and a great guy. I’m really happy for him because he trains really hard and he deserves it. He’s a great professional”.
Post-Match Social Media:
I haven’t given you guys this kind of goodness in a while. Let’s start with Karim. Even though he didn’t play he knew the importance of the win and recognized the brilliance of Navas.
Jese showed us his one true love.
Varane was hanging with Kovacic, Modric, and ToniLive!
I think Sergio has a new love interest. Nando is crying in solitude while Olalla tries to calm him.
I love this photo from Keylor. Everyone looks so nice and Marcelo is so goofy!
Toni wants to know what our plans are. Mine involved sitting on the couch and catching up with soccer!
Watishistas/os! We’re now the only undefeated team in La Liga! Our next match is Saturday against Las Palmas.
¡Hala Madrid y Nada Mas!
