Real Madrid’s return to Champions League action is now just two days away, and Karim Benzema is well aware that the first leg at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico holds the key to this Round of 16 tie, as the French striker revealed in an interview published on Bwin’s website: “They’ll be going out to get the win, because for them its an important game and they’re at home. We’ll also be going there to win because we know that the first leg is very important if we want to get through the tie, although there is always the home leg to follow. We’re going to work hard to win the game”.
“We’ve got some good players, and a great team, and we’re capable of achieving anything. We need to focus on ourselves. If we’re on our game, we’ll win. We need to be wary of the pace of their forwards, who can cause you problems, but we’re Real Madrid, and for me, we’re the best team in the world, and we’ve got the best defenders in the world”.
“He was a top player and now he’s a good coach, with a lot of experience. He offers the team a lot, he gives us confidence, gives us his ideas on how to play, and that’s all positive for us. Both my teammates and I are learning from him every day because we know that he was a great player, and that he knows a lot about the game”.
“It’s an honour to pull on the Real Madrid shirt. I’m happy and hope to continue feeling this way.”
“It’s an honour to be amongst the all-time top Champions League goalscorers because there are some great players, and some top strikers who have made their mark on the game, and in this competition. It’s also an honour to pull on the Real Madrid shirt. I’m happy and hope to continue to feeling this way”.
“I’ve got to keep on working hard to help the team. The most important thing is that we get the wins, it’s not all about me scoring. I’m a striker and when I get the chance to score, I will, but the most important thing is that I put in a good performance to help the team and my teammates”.
“When I was younger, the way he played had an influence on me. For me he’s the best striker and the best player of all time. I watch videos of him, and try to do what he does, but it’s not easy. It’s impossible to pull off the same moves as he did”.
“We’ve lifted the Décima and that was incredible. If we could win the Undécima it would go down in footballing history and the history of Real Madrid”.
The team will train at the Stadio Olimpico later today.
