The first day of Copa America Quarter Finals had Group A winners USA against Group B runners-up Ecuador.
I’m behind again! But let’s get this started!
16 June: USA 2 – 1 Ecuador
Man of the Match: Clint Dempsey (USA)
In a show of remembrance and solidarity, USA captain Michael Bradley wore a rainbow armband for the victims of the horrible shooting in Orlando.
Enner Valencia seemed a danger to the US backs from the start, but it was actually the US with the first goal of the match. Against the run of play, which seems to be USA’s favorite way to score, Jermaine Jones played a lofted ball into the head of Clint Dempsey. Deuce got his third goal of the tournament by putting his header into the top corner. In the 51st minute both teams were reduced to 10 men when Antonio Valencia and Jermaine Jones were both shown red cards. In the 61st minute, Gyasi Zardes gave USA the 2-0 lead with an easy tap in. In the 74th minute, Arroyo decided to make it interesting by beating Guzan on his right. After a nervy 4 minutes of added time, the US pulled out the win and advance to the Semi-Finals.
