Copa America: SemiFinals – USA v Argentina

24 Jun

Well, that was painful as a USA fan…

21 June: USA 0 – 4 Argentina

Man of the Match: Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Argentina struck early in this one. In the 3rd minute, Messi was left in tons of space at the top of the box and chipped the ball over the top to Lavezzi making the run. He struck it past Guzan for Argentina’s first goal of the night. In the 31st minute, Chris Wondolowski brought him down about 25 yards out. The free kick was truly exquisite, and gave Messi the second goal of the match. It was Messi’s 55th goal with the national team and meant that he broke Batistuta’s international record. Pipita made it 3-0 in the 50th minute. And that yelling you probably heard was me going “NO NO NO NO NO.” Lavezzi took a nasty fall over the advertising boards on the sideline in the second half. He lay behind the boards for a while but was finally able to stand before being helped onto the stretcher. It turned out that he’d broken his elbow. It just looked horrible. In the 85th minute, after Lamela came on to replace Lavezzi, Messi played the ball in to Higuain who again put one past Guzan. The ref didn’t even bother with extra time. USA go on to the third place match while Argentina will play for the Copa on Sunday.
