We all know that we were most excited about this match because of the Gigi and Iker love. Personally, I thought I was neutral going in. It turns out that I wasn’t.
Monday 27 June 2016:
Stade de France, Saint-Denise: Italy 2 – 0 Spain
Man of the Match: Leonardo Bonucci (Italy)
I think this match might have made Lozil‘s head explode when it was announced. She has to root for her ancestral homeland but I know she has residual La Roja love!
From the start Italy played better than Spain. They had a number of chances at the beginning of the match. Buffon made some good saves but mostly he was a bit bored. In the 33rd minute, on an assist from Giaccherini, Chiellini poked in a goal when De Gea spilled Eder’s free kick. After 1 minute of added time, the first half came to a close.
Del Bosque made a change at the half, bringing in Aduriz for Nolito. Spain had a few chances early, but nothing was very convincing. In the 81st minute, an injured Aduriz had to be replaced by Pedro. After pressure from both teams, but more energy from Italy than from Spain. In the 91st minute, however, Italy made it 2. Pelle put one in off an assist from Darmian. After 4 minutes of added time, that was it. Spain are knocked out and Italy move on.
